PART 9 – Samuel Had Helped Bring Graham Down, Yet the Memory Card Suggested He Had Been Standing Beside the Fire Long Before Anyone Saw the Smoke

The memory card remained in federal custody overnight.

Nobody slept much.

At nine the next morning, Priya called to say the investigators had finished making forensic copies.

“There are forty-three files,” she said.

“Anything useful?”

“Enough to keep everyone busy.”

I met her at the investigators’ office shortly afterward.

The lead investigator, Harris, was already waiting.

He placed a printed index on the table.

Most of the files were financial.

A few were photographs.

Several were audio recordings.

One folder was labeled simply BOARD.

Harris opened it.

The first document was an internal communication from Samuel Vega to Edwin Ashford.

It was dated eleven years earlier.

Samuel had warned Edwin that certain transfers were becoming difficult to conceal.

Edwin's reply was only four words.

“Let Marian handle compliance.”

My stomach tightened.

“That was before I worked there,” I said.

Harris nodded.

“Exactly.”

The next document was worse.

Samuel had recommended that I be hired.

Not Graham.

Not Edwin.

Samuel.

I looked at Priya.

“Why would he recruit me?”

Harris opened another file.

There was an explanation.

Samuel believed an outsider with strong forensic skills would eventually discover the missing money.

But he had apparently wanted the discovery controlled.

He had selected me because he thought Graham would trust his wife.

I leaned back.

The room seemed suddenly colder.

“So I was part of the plan from the beginning.”

“Not knowingly,” Harris said.

I looked at the screen.

The documents showed that Samuel had repeatedly protected the company from investigations.

He had also quietly preserved evidence against Edwin.

He wasn't simply corrupt.

He was calculating.

He had been building leverage.

The audio files contained conversations between Samuel and Edwin.

In one, Edwin accused Samuel of keeping copies of everything.

Samuel laughed.

“I learned from you.”

The recording ended there.

The next file contained a conversation between Samuel and Graham.

Graham sounded young.

His voice was unmistakable.

“What happens if she finds it?”

Samuel answered.

“She won't.”

“She isn't stupid.”

“No,” Samuel said. “That's why she was chosen.”

I closed my eyes.

The sentence explained too much.

The person I had thought was protecting me had actually been studying me.

Harris paused the recording.

“We haven't played the last file.”

“Why?”

“Because it appears to have been recorded recently.”

He opened it.

At first there was only static.

Then Graham spoke.

His voice was tired.

“If you're hearing this, everything has gone wrong.”

I looked at Priya.

Graham continued.

“Marian found the accounts. Samuel knows she did. Edwin knows she did. If I fight her, Samuel gets what he wants.”

A chair scraped.

Then Graham said something that changed the room.

“I'll take the fall.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the screen.

“He knew.”

“Yes,” Harris said.

“He knew the investigation would expose him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Harris didn't answer.

Priya did.

“Because he was protecting someone.”

The final audio file began.

This time, Graham was speaking directly to someone.

The other person's voice was muffled.

But one phrase came through clearly.

“You promised she would never find out.”

Graham answered.

“I promised she'd survive it.”

Then the recording ended.

I felt my hands go cold.

There was no name.

No clear identity.

Only one thing remained certain.

Graham had not surrendered because he suddenly became remorseful.

He had made a calculation.

He believed taking the blame would protect someone.

And Samuel had known about it.

We spent the afternoon examining every transaction connected to Samuel.

The pattern was complicated.

Money moved from Ashford Precision into shell companies.

Some eventually reached the foundation.

Others moved into a consulting firm.

That consulting firm had only one client.

A private investment company.

Its owner was listed through a trust.

Harris stared at the paperwork.

“That's unusual.”

“Why?”

“The trust beneficiary is confidential.”

“Can you identify them?”

“Eventually.”

He closed the folder.

“But there's another issue.”

He turned the screen toward me.

A property record appeared.

The property was a small house outside the city.

I recognized the address.

It belonged to Mara Ellison.

I looked at Priya.

“She said she had nothing to do with Samuel.”

Harris nodded.

“That's what she told us.”

“Do you think she lied?”

“I think we need to ask her.”

We drove to Mara's house that evening.

She opened the door before we knocked.

One look at our faces told her why we had returned.

“You found another name.”

“Samuel Vega,” I said.

She closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she stepped aside.

“Come in.”

We sat in the same room where she had told us about Edwin.

This time, she looked frightened.

“Samuel wasn't part of the original theft,” she said.

“Then what was he?”

“An insurance policy.”

I frowned.

Mara explained that Samuel had discovered what Edwin was doing years before anyone else knew.

Instead of exposing him, he began collecting evidence.

He believed the evidence would eventually give him control.

“Control over what?”

“The company.”

The answer was quiet.

Samuel wanted Edwin gone.

But he didn't want justice.

He wanted succession.

Mara had refused to help him.

That's why she disappeared from the company.

I asked whether Samuel had known about me.

“Yes.”

“Did he arrange my marriage to Graham?”

Mara hesitated.

“No.”

I waited.

“He didn't arrange it.”

“Then what did he do?”

“He encouraged it.”

The distinction was small.

The implication was enormous.

Samuel had watched Graham.

He had watched me.

He had waited for the right moment.

And when Graham married me, Samuel saw an opportunity.

Mara looked toward the window.

“He thought you would eventually uncover everything.”

“Why didn't he stop me?”

“Because he thought he could use what you found.”

I stood.

“Use me how?”

Mara's answer came after a long silence.

“To remove everyone above him.”
