PART 15 – Jessica Told Me There Was Another Person Inside the Hospital, and When I Saw Who It Was, I Finally Understood the Last Lie

I showed Maya the messages.

She immediately stood.

“Who does she mean?”

“I don't know.”

Arthur looked toward the door.

David's expression had changed.

Caroline whispered, “Samuel?”

“No,” David said.

His voice was certain.

“Someone else.”

Maya asked Jessica to send a name.

Jessica didn't answer.

Instead, another message appeared.

Don't trust the nurse who keeps asking about Arthur.

I looked at Maya.

Then at Arthur.

The hospital suddenly felt different.

Every hallway seemed too quiet.

Every passing employee looked suspicious.

We checked the room.

Linda was the nurse who had been caring for Arthur.

She had always seemed kind.

She had brought his medications.

She had explained his surgery.

She had even stayed late when Arthur's condition worsened.

But Jessica's message had planted doubt.

Maya stepped outside and spoke privately with hospital security.

David remained beside Arthur.

Caroline stayed with me.

Then the lights in the hallway flickered.

A moment later, Arthur's heart monitor began alarming.

Linda rushed into the room.

“Everyone step back.”

She checked the monitor.

“His pressure is dropping.”

Maya returned immediately.

“What happened?”

Linda looked nervous.

“I don't know.”

Arthur suddenly grabbed my wrist.

“Not medicine.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He struggled to speak.

“Check… bag.”

Linda froze.

Maya noticed.

“Whose bag?”

Arthur pointed toward Linda.

Linda stepped backward.

Maya immediately called security.

Linda ran.

Two officers caught her near the elevator.

The entire hospital seemed to explode into movement.

Linda was taken into a private room while security searched her belongings.

Inside her bag they found copies of Arthur's medical records.

They also found a small recorder.

Maya played it.

Samuel's voice came through.

“If he wakes up, you know what to do.”

Linda's voice answered.

“What if he talks?”

“Then make sure he doesn't.”

My stomach turned.

Arthur closed his eyes.

“How long?” Maya asked Linda later.

Linda refused to answer.

But the evidence was enough.

She had been reporting Arthur's condition to Samuel.

She had also accessed records she had no reason to access.

Then Maya found something else.

Linda had printed the original adoption documents.

“How did you get these?” Maya asked.

Linda finally broke.

“Samuel gave me access.”

“Why?”

“He said I was protecting the family.”

Maya stared at her.

“You call this protection?”

Linda began crying.

“I didn't know how far he would go.”

I thought of Jessica.

She had said almost exactly the same thing.

Everyone had used the same excuse.

Protection.

As if protecting someone gave them permission to control them.

We returned to Arthur's room.

David stood beside the window.

He looked exhausted.

“Samuel is running out of people,” he said.

Maya corrected him.

“No. He's running out of time.”

My birthday was getting closer.

The trust deadline was getting closer.

And Samuel's options were disappearing.

Then Nathan called.

I answered.

His voice was shaking.

“Ethan, you need to leave the hospital.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel is coming.”

“Let him come.”

“You don't understand.”

Nathan sounded terrified.

“He isn't coming for you.”

I froze.

“Who is he coming for?”

Nathan hesitated.

“Caroline.”

I looked at my mother.

She had heard him.

Her face went pale.

David immediately moved toward her.

“Where are you?” I asked Nathan.

“At Samuel's office.”

“Why?”

“Because I found the original ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The payments.”

My heart began racing.

Nathan explained that Samuel had kept records of every payment made to everyone involved.

Jessica.

Linda.

Nathan.

And someone else.

“Who?”

Nathan whispered the name.

I could barely hear it.

“Arthur.”

I stared at my father.

He shook his head.

“No.”

Nathan continued.

“Samuel paid Arthur for years.”

Arthur looked devastated.

I couldn't speak.

Nathan said, “But there is something else.”

“What?”

“The payments stopped eighteen years ago.”

“Why?”

“Because Arthur refused.”

Arthur lowered his head.

I realized the truth was more complicated than I had imagined.

He had accepted money once.

But perhaps he had not taken it for himself.

I demanded to know.

Arthur finally confessed.

“Samuel paid for your medical care.”

I stared at him.

“When you were sixteen, you almost died.”

I remembered the illness.

The hospital.

The bills.

I had always believed Arthur had used his savings.

“He paid because he knew if I couldn't afford your treatment, you would die.”

David closed his eyes.

Caroline began crying.

Arthur continued.

“I hated him for it. But I accepted.”

That one decision had given Samuel leverage for eighteen years.

“I tried to repay him.”

Arthur said he had spent years sending money back.

Then, eventually, he refused to cooperate.

“That was when Samuel threatened me.”

I understood.

Arthur had not been innocent.

But he had never stopped being my father.

And that distinction mattered.

My phone buzzed again.

Jessica.

I answered.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Why aren't you at the hospital?”

“Because Samuel wants you to believe everyone around you is guilty.”

“Are they?”

She was silent.

Then she said, “Some are.”

“What haven't you told me?”

Her voice cracked.

“The person who changed your birth records wasn't Samuel.”

I froze.

“Who was it?”

“I did.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“I changed the date.”

“Why?”

“Because Samuel was about to find you.”

I clenched my jaw.

“You changed my life.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You stole Caroline's letters.”

“I know.”

“You took her money.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then why should I believe anything you say?”

“Because I have the original document that proves who ordered the first lie.”

“Who?”

Jessica whispered.

“Arthur.”

I looked at my father.

Arthur's face went white.

Jessica continued.

“He signed it before you were born.”

Then the call ended.
