PART 14 – Arthur Finally Told Me Why He Took Me Home, and the Last Name on His Confession Was One I Never Expected

Arthur motioned for everyone to sit.

He looked weaker than I had ever seen him, but there was something different in his expression now. For years he had carried the weight of a secret. Tonight, he looked like a man who had finally accepted that the truth had become heavier than silence.

“I didn't steal you,” Arthur said.

I stared at him.

“I know.”

“No,” he whispered. “You don't.”

David stood near the window.

Caroline sat beside me.

Maya placed the documents on the table.

Arthur took a slow breath.

“The night you were born, Samuel came to me.”

He explained that Samuel told him Caroline had died during complications after childbirth.

Arthur had believed him.

Then Samuel placed a newborn baby in Arthur's arms.

“You told me the baby was mine?” Arthur asked.

Arthur nodded.

“He told me you were Caroline's child, but that she had wanted me to raise you.”

David's face hardened.

“She never said that.”

“I know that now.”

Arthur looked at me.

“But at the time, I believed I was doing the right thing.”

He admitted that the adoption paperwork had never been completed properly because Samuel insisted it was safer that way.

“I should have questioned it.”

“You were protecting me,” I said.

Arthur shook his head.

“I was protecting a lie.”

The words hurt, but they were honest.

Arthur told us that within months he began receiving anonymous warnings. Someone claimed Caroline's family was dangerous. Someone else warned him that David wanted the child back only because of money.

“I believed every warning.”

Maya asked, “Did Samuel provide the documents?”

“Yes.”

“Were they authentic?”

Arthur stared at her.

“Some were.”

That answer mattered.

Samuel had apparently mixed real information with fabricated evidence. He had used enough truth to make every lie believable.

Then Arthur revealed something I had never known.

He had secretly searched for Caroline.

“I found her address,” he said.

Caroline looked stunned.

“You knew where I lived?”

“I found it years later.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Samuel threatened you.”

Arthur explained that Samuel had sent him photographs of Caroline being followed. He had convinced Arthur that if he contacted her, someone would hurt her.

“And I was afraid.”

Caroline covered her face.

“I spent thirty-four years thinking you were dead.”

Arthur's eyes filled with tears.

“So did I.”

David stepped forward.

“Samuel did the same thing to me.”

Arthur nodded.

“I know.”

Maya turned to me.

“This means Samuel's entire strategy depended on controlling what each person knew.”

I looked at the trust documents.

“What about the money?”

Arthur sighed.

“That came later.”

He explained that Margaret had created the trust to protect me, not to enrich anyone else.

The trust could not be accessed by Samuel.

It could not be accessed by Jessica.

And it could not be transferred without my consent.

“That is why they needed you to sign,” Maya said.

Arthur nodded.

But then he reached beneath his pillow.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“This is the part I never told anyone.”

He handed it to me.

It was a confession.

Arthur had written that he had known for years that my adoption was incomplete. He had kept the truth hidden because he feared losing me.

But one line made me stop.

I read it twice.

Arthur had written:

I was not the only person who helped Samuel.

My hands began to shake.

“Who else?”

Arthur looked at me.

“Your wife.”

I closed my eyes.

Jessica.

Of course.

But Arthur continued.

“Jessica didn't begin this because she hated you.”

That almost made it worse.

“She was afraid.”

“Afraid of Samuel?”

“Yes.”

Arthur explained that Jessica's brother Nathan had become involved with Samuel years earlier. Nathan had debts. Samuel offered to erase them if Nathan helped him gain access to information about the trust.

Jessica discovered what Nathan was doing.

Instead of exposing him, she agreed to cooperate.

“That was how she entered your life,” Arthur said.

My stomach turned.

“So she met me because of Samuel?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Yes.”

David looked away.

Caroline reached for my hand.

I felt as though the floor beneath me had shifted.

Every memory of meeting Jessica changed.

The first time she smiled at me.

The first dinner.

The first time she said she trusted me.

The wedding.

All of it had started with information about a trust.

But then I remembered her confession.

She had said she loved me.

Could both things be true?

Maya asked Arthur, “Did Jessica know Ethan's real identity?”

Arthur nodded.

“She knew he was Daniel Sharma.”

“And she knew Caroline was alive?”

“Yes.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“She knew everything.”

Arthur's eyes filled with regret.

“She knew enough to hurt you.”

David stepped closer.

“But she also stopped Samuel from taking the trust.”

I looked at him.

“How?”

David said Jessica had discovered that Samuel planned to force me into signing a transfer document after creating financial pressure around me.

She delayed him.

She intercepted letters.

She manipulated people.

She stole money.

She lied.

“But she kept you alive and independent,” David said.

“That doesn't make it right.”

“No.”

David lowered his eyes.

“It doesn't.”

Maya suddenly looked at the trust documents.

“Wait.”

She turned one page over.

“There is a signature here.”

Arthur frowned.

“What?”

Maya pointed to the amendment.

“Ethan's signature isn't required yet. The amendment becomes active only after a specific condition.”

I leaned forward.

“What condition?”

Maya read the sentence aloud.

“The beneficiary must acknowledge both biological parents before the age of thirty-five.”

Silence.

My thirty-fifth birthday was less than three months away.

I stared at David.

Then Caroline.

Then Arthur.

The entire plan suddenly became clear.

Samuel had not been racing to get my signature randomly.

He was racing against time.

If I turned thirty-five without acknowledging my biological parents, the trust would remain locked under its original protections.

But if I acknowledged them, another provision would activate.

“What happens then?” I asked.

Maya read the next line.

“The beneficiary receives full authority over the trust.”

My heart stopped.

“And Samuel loses access completely.”

Arthur nodded.

“That was what he feared.”

I looked toward the hospital door.

Then I remembered Jessica's final message.

She had told me to meet her.

She had said she needed to tell me something before Samuel found her.

My phone buzzed.

One message.

From Jessica.

I opened it.

I know you found David. I know Arthur told you about me. But there is one thing they don't know.

A second message appeared.

Nathan is not Samuel's only accomplice.

I stared at the screen.

Then a third message arrived.

The person who helped Samuel the longest is still inside that hospital.
