The final breakthrough came from a missing-person file that had been overlooked during an earlier review.
A former investigator had preserved notes about a vehicle found near the river docks shortly after my father's disappearance.
The car belonged to Thomas.
No body had been found, and the case had never established what happened to him.
The new evidence led authorities to reopen parts of the investigation.
They interviewed former employees, examined the recovered recording, and reviewed the timeline surrounding the storage unit.
One witness remembered seeing Thomas leave the docks late at night.
Another recalled that he had spoken about traveling out of state to meet someone who could help protect the documents.
Neither account established his ultimate destination.
Then an old letter surfaced in the archived box.
It had been written by Thomas to an attorney in another state.
The letter described his intention to provide evidence of the disputed transactions and request protection for his family.
It was dated two days before he disappeared.
The attorney's office had closed decades earlier, but its surviving records showed that an appointment had been scheduled.
There was no record that Thomas attended.
The evidence suggested that he had planned to leave the area, but it did not reveal whether he had done so.
My mother read the letter in silence.
For sixteen years, she had lived with the belief that Thomas had chosen to abandon us.
Now she had proof that he had been trying to protect us and preserve evidence.
But she still didn't know whether he had survived.
I put my arm around her.
"We may never know everything," I whispered.
She nodded.
"I know."
Then she folded the letter carefully and placed it in a protective sleeve.
"For the first time," she said, "I don't feel like I'm waiting for him to explain himself."
She looked at the documents spread across the table.
"I can finally understand what he was trying to do."
