PART 18 – Victoria Finally Tells Us Why She Came

Victoria requested a private meeting through her lawyer.

Daniel advised us to keep the discussion formal and make sure the relevant documents were recorded.

We met in a conference room at his office.

Victoria looked tired.

For the first time, she wasn't wearing the confident smile I remembered from our first encounter.

She studied the original agreement.

"My father never intended this to become public," she said.

"Then why did he sign it?" I asked.

She looked at me.

"Because Thomas forced him to acknowledge the problems."

She explained that her father had initially dismissed Thomas's concerns.

But as more discrepancies appeared, Richard had agreed to create an arrangement intended to preserve evidence and provide a process for resolving certain claims.

Victoria had believed the arrangement would eventually disappear into old files.

She had spent years trying to simplify the estate and remove unresolved obligations.

When the property company began reviewing its assets, my mother's name appeared in a document Victoria thought had been forgotten.

She came to our house because she wanted us to leave before the old records attracted further scrutiny.

"Why didn't you simply explain the agreement?" I asked.

Victoria looked away.

"Because I was afraid of what it would reveal about my family."

It wasn't a full confession.

She did not admit to every allegation, and the evidence still required independent review.

But she acknowledged that she had known more about the old arrangement than she had initially revealed.

My mother stared at her.

"You could have told me the truth years ago."

Victoria's voice softened.

"Yes. I could have."

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then my mother said, "I don't need you to feel sorry for me. I need you to stop hiding the records."

Victoria agreed to cooperate with the formal review.

It was not forgiveness.

It was the first honest conversation we had ever had with her.
