I replayed the footage again.
And again.
By the fourth time, my hands were shaking so violently I almost dropped the tablet.
The timestamp read 3:42 p.m.
Chloe was sitting at the dining table coloring a picture of a mermaid while humming to herself. A small plastic container filled with brightly colored magnetic beads sat on the counter—one I had never seen before.
Then the kitchen door opened.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was Ethan’s younger sister, Vanessa.
She had offered to stop by that afternoon while I finished grading exams upstairs. She had always called herself Chloe’s “favorite aunt,” constantly buying her little gifts despite my repeated requests not to bring tiny toys into the house.
On the recording, Vanessa smiled, opened the container, and poured dozens of shiny magnetic balls onto the table.
“Look, Chloe,” she said cheerfully. “They’re magic fish eggs.”
Chloe’s eyes lit up.
“They’re pretty!”
“They are,” Vanessa replied with a laugh. “Just don’t tell Mommy I brought them.”
She walked into the kitchen to answer a phone call, leaving Chloe alone with the magnets for nearly fifteen minutes.
The camera had no audio from that distance, but it clearly showed Chloe pretending the tiny silver balls were food for her stuffed dolphin.
One by one, she placed them on her tongue, giggling each time they clicked together.
My blood ran cold.
She wasn’t trying to eat them.
She was pretending to feed her imaginary sea animals.
Then she accidentally swallowed one.
She frowned.
Reached for another.
Swallowed again.
Within two minutes, she had swallowed dozens.
By the time Vanessa returned, Chloe was rubbing her stomach.
Instead of asking what happened, Vanessa casually gathered the remaining magnets into the container, slipped it into her purse, kissed Chloe on the forehead, and left.
She never told us.
Not that evening.
Not when Chloe complained her tummy hurt.
Not when we rushed to the emergency room.
Not even while surgeons fought to save her life.
Ethan stared at the screen in complete disbelief.
“No…” he whispered.
“My sister wouldn’t…”
I paused the video on the exact frame where Vanessa watched Chloe clutch her stomach before turning away.
“She knew something was wrong,” I said.
He covered his face with both hands.
Five minutes later, his phone rang.
Vanessa.
Ethan answered on speaker.
“Hey,” she said casually. “How’s Chloe? Is she feeling better?”
There was a long silence.
Then Ethan asked one question.
“Vanessa… why didn’t you tell us about the magnets?”
The line went completely silent.
For nearly ten seconds, all we heard was her breathing.
When she finally spoke, her voice had changed.
“…You watched the cameras, didn’t you?”
My heart sank.
She wasn’t denying it.
She already knew exactly what we had seen.
