PART 14 – The photograph connected Daniel to the hospital, and for the first time I realized Ryan’s obsession with my past had begun long before the custody battle

The next morning, Mara called before I had finished breakfast.

“Don't respond to the unknown number.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“Good. Whoever sent it knows you're looking.”

I glanced toward the hallway where the children were getting ready for school.

“Can you trace it?”

“Not directly. But I can document it.”

I forwarded everything.

Then I sent her the photograph of my mother outside the hospital.

She called back almost immediately.

“Where did you get this?”

“Lily's adoption box.”

There was a pause.

“Annie, this is important.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What is it?”

“The hospital name is visible.”

I looked again.

It was the same hospital where Lily had been born.

Mara continued, “And Daniel's name appears on the back.”

“I know.”

“No. Look at the date.”

I did.

The date was two days before Lily's birth.

Mara said, “Daniel may not have been just a name connected to the story. He may have been physically present.”

My mind raced.

I called my father.

He arrived less than an hour later.

When I showed him the photograph, his expression went pale.

“You've seen this before,” I said.

He sat down.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Because your mother begged me not to.”

The answer made me angry all over again.

“What happened at that hospital?”

My father stared at the photograph.

“Your mother went there with Daniel.”

“Why?”

“I never knew the whole reason.”

“You're my father.”

“I know.”

“Then why does everyone know pieces of my life except me?”

He closed his eyes.

“Because we thought we were protecting you.”

I almost laughed.

That phrase had become the excuse for every wound.

My father finally told me what he remembered.

Daniel had contacted my mother shortly before Lily was born. There had been an argument. He wanted something changed in the paperwork. My mother refused.

“What paperwork?”

He didn't know.

But he remembered hearing one sentence.

Daniel had said, “If Annie finds out, everything changes.”

I felt cold.

“What did he mean?”

“I don't know.”

Lily had been listening from the doorway.

She stepped into the kitchen.

“My adoptive mother said the same thing.”

I turned toward her.

“She said what?”

“She told me the truth was complicated because if Annie found me too soon, certain people would have come looking.”

My father looked at Lily.

“Your adoptive mother knew my daughter?”

“Not personally,” Lily said. “But she knew the family story.”

That afternoon, Mara arranged for us to meet with a records specialist.

The old hospital file was incomplete, but there were enough pieces to establish a timeline.

Lily had been born two days after the photograph.

My mother had been present.

Daniel had been listed in an older administrative note.

And there was a separate document referencing a private adoption arrangement.

But the most disturbing detail was a handwritten notation.

Release authorized after family consultation.

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?”

The records specialist couldn't say.

Mara photographed everything.

Then my phone rang.

Claire.

I almost didn't answer.

“Annie?”

“Why are you calling?”

“I need to tell you something before Ryan does.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“I found another email.”

“From Ryan?”

“Yes.”

“What does it say?”

Claire hesitated.

“He wrote to someone six years ago.”

“Who?”

“A private investigator.”

My entire body went still.

“What did he ask?”

“He asked them to find Lily.”

I closed my eyes.

So the search had started years before the custody fight.

Before Claire's pregnancy.

Before the wedding.

Before the relocation agreement.

“Why?” I whispered.

Claire's voice broke.

“I don't know.”

“Then find out.”

“I will.”

She ended the call.

Lily looked at me.

“Do you believe her?”

“I don't know.”

That was the hardest part.

I had once believed my husband without question.

I had believed my mother.

I had believed my sister.

Now every answer came with another question underneath it.

That night, Ryan called.

I watched his name appear on my screen.

I didn't answer.

He called again.

Then he sent a message.

We need to talk about the children.

I replied only once.

There is nothing to discuss until my attorney reviews everything.

His response came immediately.

You're making this worse.

Then:

You don't understand what you're uncovering.

I stared at those words.

Not what you're doing.

Not what you're saying.

What you're uncovering.

I showed Mara.

She said, “Don't respond.”

So I didn't.

Instead, I opened the folder Claire had sent.

There it was.

An email from six years earlier.

Ryan had written to the investigator:

I need to locate a woman named Lily. Biological connection to Annie. Discretion is essential. Do not contact Annie.

My hands began shaking.

There was another sentence.

Her existence may explain why Annie's family has concealed certain information for years.

I read it twice.

Then I saw the final line.

If you locate her, report to me before approaching anyone.

Lily leaned over my shoulder.

She read it too.

“I knew he had searched,” she whispered.

“You knew?”

“My adoptive mother told me someone was looking for me.”

“But you didn't know it was Ryan.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“Why would he care so much?”

She shook her head.

Then she reached into her box and pulled out one final envelope.

“I've been afraid to open this.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother told me to wait until I met you.”

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting belonged to my mother.

But the date was six years earlier.

And the first sentence said:

Lily, if Ryan ever finds you, do not let him tell you who you are.
