PART 8 — THE ORIGINAL FACILITY
The message stayed on the screen.
“Subject has returned to the original facility.”
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in that room understood what it meant.
Alex had not been found.
He had not been captured.
He had gone there willingly.
Back to the place where his entire life had started.
Back to the place everyone else was afraid of.
Richard stared at the alert.
For the first time since he entered the room…
He looked human.
Not powerful.
Not in control.
Afraid.
Matthew noticed too.
“You’re scared.”
Richard didn’t answer.
Matthew stepped closer.
“You’re actually scared of him.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Alex doesn’t understand what he’s doing.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
My voice was calm.
“He understands exactly what he’s doing.”
Richard looked at me.
“He has spent his entire life remembering things you wanted forgotten.”
The room went silent.
Elena grabbed her coat.
“We need to leave.”
Richard looked at her.
“Where?”
“To the facility.”
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Richard shook his head.
“You don’t go there.”
Matthew frowned.
“Why?”
Richard looked at him.
“Because that is what Alex wants.”
I felt a chill.
“What do you mean?”
Richard looked at the screen.
“Alex doesn’t want to escape.”
A pause.
“He wants everyone to see.”
The words stayed with me.
See.
Not believe.
Not understand.
See.
Because Alex had spent years carrying a truth nobody wanted.
And now he was done carrying it alone.
The drive to the original facility took almost an hour.
Nobody spoke much.
Lily sat beside me in the back seat.
Her head rested against my shoulder.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Is Alex my brother?”
I looked down.
“Yes.”
“Will he like me?”
The question broke my heart.
Because she wasn’t asking about the system.
She wasn’t asking about secrets.
She was asking if someone she had never met would love her.
“He already does.”
“How do you know?”
I smiled sadly.
“Because he waited twenty years for me.”
When we arrived, the building looked abandoned.
A large concrete structure.
No signs.
No guards.
No lights.
The kind of place designed to disappear.
Richard stopped at the entrance.
“I never wanted you to see this.”
I looked at him.
“That’s the problem.”
“What?”
“You never wanted anyone to see anything.”
The door opened.
Not because we unlocked it.
Because someone inside unlocked it.
Alex was waiting.
Standing in the middle of the hallway.
Older than the picture.
Different than the voice.
But the eyes…
The eyes were mine.
My knees almost gave out.
“Alex.”
He looked at me.
And for a moment…
Nobody moved.
Then he whispered:
“Hi, Mom.”
I walked toward him slowly.
I wanted to run.
I wanted to hug him.
I wanted to ask a thousand questions.
But instead, I stopped in front of him.
Because twenty years of missing someone cannot be fixed in one second.
“I’m sorry.”
Alex shook his head.
“No.”
“But—”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“You don’t apologize for something they stole from you.”
The tears came instantly.
Because my child…
The child I never raised…
Was comforting me.
Lily stepped forward.
Alex looked at her.
Neither of them spoke.
Then Lily whispered:
“You’re my brother?”
Alex smiled.
A real smile.
“Yes.”
She looked at him carefully.
“Are you mad at Mom?”
Alex’s expression changed.
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because she was the only person who kept fighting.”
Behind us, Richard entered.
The moment Alex saw him…
The warmth disappeared.
The hallway became cold.
“You came.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
Alex looked around.
“The place where you started everything.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“You don’t know the full story.”
Alex laughed softly.
“I know more than anyone.”
Alex walked toward a control panel.
He touched the screen.
A video appeared.
Old footage.
A room.
A child.
A mother.
I felt my breath disappear.
Because I recognized the room.
The same room where Lily had been taken.
The same room where the system operated.
But this recording was older.
Much older.
A younger Richard appeared on screen.
But he wasn’t alone.
Standing beside him was another person.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected.
My father.
“No.”
The word escaped me.
Matthew looked at me.
“Your father?”
I couldn’t answer.
Because the truth was appearing in front of us.
My father had not been unaware.
He had been involved.
Alex looked at me.
“This is what they hid.”
My hands trembled.
“Why?”
His voice became quiet.
“Because your father tried to destroy the project.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He realized what they were becoming.”
Richard looked away.
Alex continued.
“He tried to take you away from it.”
“Then why didn’t he tell me?”
Alex looked at the screen.
“Because he failed.”
The video continued.
My father arguing with Richard.
“You’re turning children into machines.”
Richard responding:
“No. We’re creating stronger humans.”
My father shook his head.
“They are children.”
A pause.
Then:
“You will destroy every family you touch.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly everything changed.
My father wasn’t the beginning.
Richard wasn’t the beginning.
The system itself was older.
Much older.
Alex looked at all of us.
“There is one final file.”
Richard’s face changed.
“No.”
Alex walked toward another computer.
“This is the one you were all afraid of.”
He pressed a button.
A folder appeared.
One name.
ORIGIN.
My heart started racing.
“What is that?”
Alex looked at me.
“The truth about why you were chosen.”
The screen opened.
The first line appeared.
And I felt the world stop.
“Subject: Claire Carter.”
“Status: First successful emotional resistance case.”
I stared at the words.
Because I finally understood.
I was never just the mother who lost her children.
I was the reason the entire system existed.
