PART 11 – Megan Finally Admits She Knew About the Embryos Before the Affair, but Her Version of Ryan’s Proposal Changes Who Planned What

Claire did not call Megan immediately.

She wanted to.

Every impulse pushed in that direction.

Instead, she sat in Angela's office after Rebecca left and stared at the copy of Nicole's letter.

January twenty-third.

Thai food.

Megan asking about frozen embryos.

Ryan allegedly working late.

The memory was suddenly full of details Claire had not questioned at the time.

Megan had known Claire kept ultrasound pictures in the kitchen drawer.

She had asked how many embryos remained.

She had asked whether Ryan had equal rights to them.

Claire had answered because Megan was her friend.

Not because she imagined she was providing information to someone who might someday carry one.

Angela watched her from across the table.

"Don't call while you're this angry."

"I'm not angry."

"You are extremely angry."

Claire looked at her.

Angela nodded.

"Exactly like that."

Claire almost smiled.

Then the expression disappeared.

"I need to know when Megan knew."

"You need evidence more than confrontation."

"I need both."

"Then let Cole speak to her first."

Claire hated the logic.

She waited.

Cole interviewed Megan that evening.

He called Claire afterward.

"She changed part of her timeline."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Of course she did."

"She now admits Ryan discussed the embryos with her before the date she originally gave us."

"How much earlier?"

"Several months."

Claire sat down.

"Before they kissed?"

"She says yes."

That hurt in a way Claire had not expected.

"So she knew before the affair."

"According to her revised statement."

"What exactly did Ryan say?"

Cole paused.

"He told her he and Claire had embryos in storage and that pregnancy had become difficult for Claire."

Claire clenched her jaw.

"What else?"

"He asked whether Megan would ever consider being a gestational carrier for friends."

Claire whispered, "Friends."

"That's what she says."

"When?"

"Late December."

Claire looked toward her living-room wall.

Christmas.

Patricia's house.

Megan had attended their holiday party.

At the time, Claire thought nothing of it.

Megan had spent half the evening talking with Ryan near the fireplace.

"What did she answer?"

"She says she thought it was hypothetical."

Claire laughed without humor.

"She thinks everything was hypothetical until she got pregnant."

Cole continued.

"She told Ryan she might consider carrying for someone she cared about."

"And then?"

"He said he was serious."

Claire gripped the phone.

"Did he say I knew?"

"Megan says yes."

"Did she believe him?"

"She says she did at first."

"At first."

"Yes."

Claire waited.

Cole understood the question.

"She began doubting it after the January conversation at your house."

Claire went completely still.

"Why?"

"Because you spoke about the embryos as though no carrier had been selected."

Claire remembered the Thai containers on the table.

She remembered saying she could not imagine another woman carrying her child.

Megan had gone quiet.

Claire had assumed the subject made her uncomfortable.

Now she understood.

"So she knew I didn't know."

Cole's voice was careful.

"She suspected."

"No. She knew."

"That's for the evidence to establish."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

"She says Ryan told her you were still grieving and that discussing it would make things worse."

Claire laughed again.

The excuse had become almost insulting through repetition.

Emotionally fragile.

Grieving.

Unstable.

Every person in the conspiracy had apparently been instructed to protect Claire from knowledge about her own life.

"What happened next?"

"Megan says she told Ryan she would not agree unless you consented."

Claire opened her eyes.

"Do you believe that?"

"I told you—"

"I know."

Cole continued.

"She says that's when Ryan stopped discussing it for several weeks."

"And they started the affair?"

"She says the emotional relationship had already crossed boundaries by then."

Claire looked away.

"How noble."

"Claire."

"I'm listening."

"Megan says the situation changed after your second miscarriage."

Claire's throat tightened.

She remembered that night.

The hospital.

The blood.

Ryan standing in the hallway.

Megan arriving the next morning with coffee.

"What changed?"

"Ryan told Megan you had decided never to try again and wanted the embryos discarded."

Claire stood.

"I never said that."

"We know."

"What did Megan do?"

"She asked whether you had signed disposal consent."

Claire froze.

"She asked him that?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

"He said you were handling it through the divorce."

Claire stared at the floor.

"So she still didn't have proof."

"No."

"And she agreed anyway."

"Eventually."

"When?"

"After Patricia got involved directly."

Claire's skin prickled.

"What did Patricia say?"

"According to Megan, Patricia told her that Claire had agreed privately but refused to meet because she could not emotionally handle seeing Megan become pregnant."

Claire almost dropped the phone.

"She told Megan I knew it was her?"

"Yes."

Claire sat back down.

That lie was sophisticated.

It explained Claire's absence.

It explained the forged paperwork.

It explained why Megan should not contact her.

It turned Claire's silence into consent.

"What proof did Patricia show her?"

"A copy of the authorization form."

"The forged one."

"Yes."

"So Megan saw my forged signature before the transfer."

"She says yes."

Claire felt physically sick.

"Did she question it?"

"She says she recognized your signature."

Claire's voice became quiet.

"She knew how I signed my name."

"Yes."

"And she didn't notice the missing middle initial?"

"Megan says she never knew you used one on clinic documents."

That was plausible.

It did not absolve anything.

"When did the affair become physical?"

Cole paused.

"She places that after the discussion about carrying the embryo."

Claire stared.

"So Ryan asked my best friend to carry our child before he slept with her."

"According to Megan."

The sequence changed something.

It made the betrayal less impulsive.

Less romantic.

More transactional.

Claire had always assumed Ryan fell for Megan, then later decided to use an embryo.

What if the embryo connected them first?

What if intimacy grew around a secret plan already excluding Claire?

"Did Ryan choose Megan because he wanted her," Claire asked, "or did he want her because she'd agreed to carry the embryo?"

Cole did not answer.

There was no way to know.

Not yet.

Later that night, Megan called.

Claire almost let it ring out.

Then she answered.

"You lied."

Megan began crying immediately.

"I know."

"Stop crying."

The words came sharper than Claire intended.

Megan went silent.

Claire stood near the window, looking at the street.

"I need you to answer me without explaining yourself."

"Okay."

"Did Ryan ask you to be a carrier before you kissed him?"

"Yes."

Claire closed her eyes.

"Did you ask me about embryos on January twenty-third because of that?"

"Yes."

"You knew I didn't know."

"I knew something was wrong."

"That's not what I asked."

Megan's voice broke.

"Yes."

Claire swallowed.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"I was confused."

"No."

"Claire—"

"No explanations. Answers."

Megan breathed unevenly.

"Because I liked him."

The honesty hurt worse than another lie might have.

Claire said nothing.

Megan continued.

"I liked that he trusted me. I liked that he was talking to me about something that mattered."

"He was my husband."

"I know."

"You were sitting in my house gathering information for him."

"I know."

"You watched me grieve."

"I know."

Claire's voice shook despite her effort.

"Did you want my child?"

Megan began sobbing.

"I didn't think of it like that."

"How did you think of it?"

"As helping."

"Helping who?"

Silence.

"Ryan."

Claire shut her eyes.

There it was.

Not Claire.

Not some abstract family.

Ryan.

"When did you stop believing this was for me?"

Megan whispered, "Before the transfer."

Claire felt her heart pound.

"Before?"

"Yes."

"How long before?"

"A few weeks."

"So by the time you let them put my embryo inside you, you knew I probably hadn't agreed."

Megan was crying too hard to answer.

Claire waited.

"Say it."

"Yes."

Claire pressed one hand against her mouth.

She had wanted truth.

Truth had teeth.

After several seconds she lowered her hand.

"Why are you admitting this now?"

"Because I can't keep lying."

"That's not enough."

"I know."

"No. You don't."

Claire looked at Lily's photograph on her phone.

"You get to wake up every morning and be her mother because of a decision made with my body, my genetics, and my consent removed from the room."

Megan whispered, "I know."

"You don't get to use guilt as proof you've changed."

"I know."

Claire nearly ended the call.

Then Megan said something unexpected.

"Ryan didn't plan everything."

Claire paused.

"What?"

"He didn't know Patricia had approached Nicole first."

Claire frowned.

"How do you know?"

"Because when Patricia mentioned it after my transfer, Ryan was furious."

Claire's mind sharpened.

"When did she mention Nicole?"

"Two months into my pregnancy."

"What exactly did she say?"

"She said I should be grateful because the first arrangement hadn't worked out."

Claire gripped the phone.

"And Ryan?"

"He asked what she meant."

"You believed he genuinely didn't know?"

"Yes."

Claire thought of Nicole's letter.

Ryan had said if Nicole would not do it, they needed someone Claire trusted.

That suggested he knew.

Unless Nicole had misunderstood who "they" were talking about.

"Did Patricia explain?"

"Not fully."

"What did Ryan say later?"

"He told me his mother had been interfering in fertility decisions for years."

Claire stared at the wall.

"For years."

"Yes."

"Anything else?"

Megan hesitated.

"He said his father was the one who first suggested a carrier."

Claire stopped.

"Thomas?"

"That's what Ryan said."

"When?"

"I don't know."

"What exactly?"

Megan took a breath.

"Ryan said after your first miscarriage, Thomas told him that if pregnancy was destroying the marriage, they should find someone else to carry the embryos."

Claire felt a chill.

Thomas.

The quiet man.

The man who supposedly attended Patricia's secret consultation merely because she asked.

"What did Ryan think?"

"He told me he hated the idea at first."

"And later?"

"He changed his mind."

"Why?"

Megan became silent.

Claire knew the answer before she heard it.

"Because he started believing the problem was me."

Claire waited.

Megan whispered, "Yes."

The call ended ten minutes later.

Claire remained by the window.

She had spent days seeing Patricia as the architect.

Then Thomas emerged.

Now the timeline looked more complicated.

Patricia had pursued Nicole.

Thomas may have introduced the carrier idea earlier.

Ryan had eventually chosen Megan.

Megan knowingly participated despite doubts.

Marissa enabled the transfer.

No single mastermind.

A system of choices.

Each person telling themselves their piece was small enough not to count.

Claire looked at Lily's photograph again.

The complexity did not make the betrayal smaller.

It made responsibility harder to escape.

Because if there had been no single moment when everything went wrong, then there had been dozens.

Dozens of moments when somebody could have stopped.

Nobody did.
