Victor’s last attempt came three days before the final hearing.
His attorneys claimed the evidence had been illegally obtained.
They argued the documents were unreliable.
They argued Lydia’s recordings were incomplete.
For a moment, it looked like the case might weaken.
Then Claire remembered something.
The notebook.
The one Lydia left for Ethan.
Inside was a reference.
A place.
A storage locker.
Nobody had checked it.
The locker contained the missing pieces.
Original documents.
Emails.
Copies of messages.
And one letter.
Written by Victor.
Not to Ethan.
Not to Vanessa.
To himself.
It was a private note explaining his plan.
He wrote about Daniel’s stubbornness.
He wrote about the property.
He wrote about making the family collapse from within.
The sentence that mattered most was simple.
The family will destroy itself if given enough pressure.
The prosecutor presented the letter.
Victor’s calm expression disappeared.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Because he could no longer pretend.
The evidence showed everything.
The manipulation.
The payments.
The lies.
The years of planning.
After the hearing, Ethan approached Daniel.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I know.”
Ethan seemed surprised.
“You believe me?”
“I believe you’re sorry.”
“That’s not the same.”
“No.”
Daniel paused.
“It isn’t.”
That honesty hurt.
But Ethan accepted it.
Because consequences were part of becoming better.
Later, Claire found Daniel looking through old photographs.
“Mom would hate this.”
Claire smiled sadly.
“She would hate what happened.”
“Yes.”
“But she would want us to stop hurting each other.”
Daniel looked at the pictures.
“She always believed people could change.”
Claire nodded.
“Maybe that was her greatest strength.”
“Or her weakness.”
“Maybe both.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
For the first time in months.
A real smile.
