Nobody had approached my property that evening, but he wasn't willing to assume the person who entered Patricia's house would stop there.

Daniel showed him the forged affidavit.

Hart read it twice.

"Where did this come from?"

"Court file."

"And Brian denies signing it?"

"Completely."

Hart photographed the document.

"Cynthia Warren."

"You know her?" I asked.

"By reputation. We don't build a story and then force evidence into it."

He was right.

I hated that he was right because the story already seemed obvious.

The wedding photograph arrived by police courier shortly after midnight.

Brian came with it.

He stopped inside the kitchen when he saw me.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Daniel took the evidence sleeve.

The photograph had been printed from an old digital image. Brian and I stood beneath the oak tree behind the reception hall, smiling at each other.

Richard appeared several feet behind us.

His face had been carefully cut away.

Not scribbled over.

Removed with a blade.

On the back, block letters read: RICHARD KEPT THE WRONG SECRET.

Hart asked Brian, "Who had access to the original photograph?"

"Everyone. Your leverage is disappearing."

Samuel looked back at Brian.

"Did you find R-17?"

Brian said nothing.

Samuel knew from his expression.

"Good."

"What did Dad mean when he said you weren't the thief?"

Samuel's face changed.

For the first time, anger gave way to something closer to exhaustion.

"Richard blamed me for everything."

"Were you innocent?"

"No."

The bluntness surprised us.

"I stole. Forged. Gambled. Lied. Your father wasn't wrong about me."

"Then what was he wrong about?"

Samuel looked toward the window.

"I wasn't the one who started it."

"Who did?"

"Warren."

Hart said, "Robert Warren?"

"Before he was Judge Warren."

Samuel explained that Robert had been a young attorney when Richard and Samuel began buying properties.

He knew how to structure companies.

How to hide ownership.

How to move distressed property before creditors could reach it.

At first, it was aggressive business.

Then it became fraud.

"Robert realized paperwork was more valuable than property," Samuel said. "Change a deed, backdate a signature, lose a court filing. Suddenly a building belongs to someone else."

"Your brother participated?" Hart asked.

"At first."

Brian looked sick.

"How much did Dad know?"

"Enough."

"How much did he do?"

Samuel met his nephew's eyes.

"Enough to spend the rest of his life pretending he was better than me."

Brian absorbed that quietly.

"What changed?"

"Karen."

Melissa stepped closer to the glass.

Samuel continued.

"Richard fell in love with her."

Brian flinched at the word love.

"He wanted out. Wanted legitimate businesses. Wanted to expose Warren."

"And you?"

"I wanted my money."

"Of course."

Samuel smiled without humor.

"I told you I'm not a good man."

Hart asked, "What happened to Karen?"

Samuel's eyes closed.

"Warren found out she had copies."

"Copies of what?"

"Deeds. Account records. Payments to courthouse employees."

Melissa whispered, "Mom."

Samuel could not hear her.

Brian asked, "Did Warren kill her?"

"I don't know."

"Do you believe her crash was an accident?"

"No."

"Did my mother know?"

Samuel opened his eyes.

"Patricia knew Karen was in danger."

"Did she help her?"

A long silence.

"No."

Melissa turned away from the glass.

Brian's jaw tightened.

"Why?"

"Because Patricia wanted Karen gone too."

The cruelty of that sentence settled over everyone.

Hart asked, "What secret did Richard keep?"

Samuel studied him.

"Not what. Who."

Brian frowned.

"Who?"

"Someone survived the crash."

Melissa spun back.

"What?"

Samuel looked toward the observation glass as though he knew she was there.

"Karen wasn't alone that night."

Hart stepped closer.

"Who was in the car?"

Samuel shook his head.

"Wrong question."

"What is the right one?"

"Who was following her?"

"Who?"

Samuel smiled faintly.

"Ask Patricia."

Brian stood.

"I am tired of being told to ask my mother."

"Then ask Warren."

"We will."

Samuel's smile disappeared.

"You think a badge outside this room protects you from Robert Warren?"

Hart said, "If you have evidence, give it to us."

"I already did."

"The ledgers?"

"No."

"R-17?"

"No."

Samuel looked at Brian.

"Your wedding."

Brian froze.

"What about it?"

"I came because Richard told me to."

"You said you hated each other."

"We did."

"Then why?"

"Because he wanted witnesses."

"To what?"

Samuel's breathing became heavier.

"He thought Warren was going to kill him."

Brian stared.

"Nine years ago?"

"Yes."

"But Dad lived another six years."

"Warren changed his mind."

"Why?"

Samuel looked toward the observation glass again.

"Because Richard gave him something."

"What?"

"A copy of Karen's evidence."

"Why would that stop him?"

"It didn't."

Samuel's eyes narrowed.

"It bought time."

Hart asked, "Where is the original evidence?"

Samuel looked back at Brian.

"Richard gave it to the only person Warren would never suspect."

"Who?"

Before Samuel answered, alarms sounded from the hallway.

One officer opened the door.

"Detective."

Hart stepped out.

Voices rose.

A nurse hurried past.

Then Hart returned.

His face was hard.

"We're done."

Samuel laughed weakly.

"Warren?"

Hart didn't answer.

Someone had attempted to enter the restricted floor using forged hospital credentials.

The man fled when challenged.

Security cameras caught his face.

Hart showed us the image.

Brian didn't recognize him.

Samuel did.

"That's Warren's driver."

"Name?"

"Paul Mercer."

Daniel stiffened.

I looked at him.

"What?"

He stared at the image.

"My last name is Mercer."

Brian looked toward him.

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"Paul is my brother."

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Daniel’s Brother Connected Our Lawyer to Warren’s Inner Circle, and Patricia’s Confession Revealed Why Richard Chose an Enemy to Guard His Evidence

Police arrived at my house eleven minutes after Brian's call.
