Samuel suddenly pulled off the highway and said they had to leave the truck."

"He took Ethan into the woods?"

"Yes."

According to Ethan, Samuel moved quickly through the trees, repeatedly checking behind them.

Eventually they reached an old hunting path.

Samuel told Ethan to wait.

Then he heard voices.

Two men.

There was an argument.

A struggle.

Ethan hid.

He heard a gunshot.

The blood on his sleeve came later when Samuel returned injured.

"Where was he hit?" Hart asked.

"Ethan isn't sure. Samuel was bleeding near his shoulder."

"What did Samuel do?"

"He gave Ethan the backpack, this key, and directions back toward the road."

"Then?"

"He told him to run."

Melissa emerged from the room again.

"He also told Ethan something else."

Hart looked at her.

"What?"

Melissa's eyes moved to Brian.

"He said, 'Your uncle has to know his father wasn't the thief.'"

Brian frowned.

"My father?"

Hart asked, "What thief?"

Melissa shook her head.

"Ethan doesn't know."

Daniel took the brass key without touching it directly, holding only the evidence bag Hart had provided.

"R-17."

He looked at Brian.

"Could R stand for Richard?"

"Maybe."

"Or records."

Nobody knew.

Hart received a call from officers searching the woods.

They had found blood.

A lot of it.

But no body.

Footprints from at least three adults were present near the site of the struggle.

Samuel had not been alone with Ethan.

Someone had followed them.

"Could Patricia have sent somebody?" Brian asked.

Melissa looked at him.

"She's in custody."

"She knew people."

Daniel said, "So did Richard."

That brought us back to the hidden history.

Samuel might have been criminal, manipulative, and dangerous.

But someone else was apparently hunting him.

A second threat had entered the story.

Police traced R-17 by checking Richard's known property records, storage facilities, safe-deposit boxes, and holding companies.

Nothing matched immediately.

Then Brian remembered a place his father used to mention.

"Railway lockers."

Hart looked at him.

"What?"

"There used to be lockers at the old Cedar Central station."

"That's been closed twenty years."

"I know."

"Why would Richard use one?"

"I don't know."

The station had been converted into a municipal archive building.

A records check produced something unexpected.

Before renovation, several locked storage compartments in the basement had never been claimed. They were catalogued rather than opened because ownership records had been incomplete.

Compartment R-17 existed.

It remained sealed.

By evening, police obtained access.

The key fit.

Inside were three ledgers, a cassette recorder, photographs, property documents, and a sealed letter.

The envelope bore Brian's name.

He opened it with Hart and Daniel present.

His father's handwriting covered several pages.

Brian read silently at first.

Then stopped.

"What?"

He looked at us.

"Dad knew Samuel would come back."

Daniel asked, "What else?"

Brian continued reading.

His face changed line by line.

Then he lowered the letter.

"The hidden cash wasn't Dad's."

Patricia had been telling us that Richard accumulated money secretly.

According to the letter, that wasn't true.

At least not all of it.

Richard claimed Samuel had been laundering money through their businesses decades earlier.

When Richard discovered it, he removed what he could and hid it as evidence.

The cash in the storage unit belonged to Samuel and people Samuel worked with.

That explained why Samuel returned.

But the letter contained something worse.

Richard named another person involved.

Someone who had helped Samuel hide money, falsify property records, and threaten him into silence.

Brian read the name twice.

Then looked at Detective Hart.

"That's not possible."

Hart took the letter.

I watched him read.

His expression hardened.

"Who?" I asked.

Brian looked at me.

"Judge Warren."

I didn't recognize the name immediately.

Daniel did.

"Robert Warren?"

Brian nodded.

Daniel went still.

Robert Warren was not some retired local official.

He was the senior judge who had signed several of the earliest orders in my divorce case.

The same judge who had initially treated the sixty-one-thousand-dollar withdrawals as potentially marital misconduct.

Hart turned toward the hallway.

"If Richard's letter is accurate, Samuel wasn't only hiding from police."

"Then who attacked him?" I asked.

Hart folded the letter carefully.

"Possibly the man who has spent thirty years making sure none of this became public."

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Richard’s Hidden Ledgers Named a Respected Judge, but One Missing Page Suggested Someone Else Had Been Protecting Samuel for Years

The search became a pursuit.
