The slant was close. The spacing between Angela and Brooks was almost right. Even the long tail I put on the final s had been copied.

Brian sat beside me.

Patricia had insisted on coming too.

Thomas placed the withdrawal slips beneath a clear plastic cover. "Mrs. Brooks, you're certain you didn't sign these?"

"Absolutely."

Brian shifted in his chair.

I heard it.

Thomas heard it too.

"Mr. Brooks?"

Brian rubbed his palms against his jeans. "I'm just trying to understand how somebody could copy her signature this closely."

"So am I," I said.

Patricia leaned forward. "Could Angela have signed them without remembering?"

Thomas looked at her.

I felt heat rise into my face.

"I'm forty years old, Patricia. I don't black out and withdraw tens of thousands of dollars."

"I'm only asking."

"You've been 'only asking' for three weeks."

Thomas raised a hand. "Let's stay focused."

He pointed to the first withdrawal. The amount was fifteen thousand dollars. The next was fourteen thousand. The third was sixteen thousand. The final transaction made the total sixty-one thousand.

"All four were made on Fridays," he said.

That detail struck me.

"Fridays?"

"Yes."

"Why Fridays?"

"We don't know."

I looked at my schedules. Friday was usually one of my longest hospital days. Whoever had chosen those dates either had extraordinary luck or knew exactly where I would be.

Thomas continued. "Identification was presented each time."

"My driver's license?"

"A driver's license containing your information."

"Containing?"

He paused.

"We're still determining whether it was your actual license or a reproduction."

I opened my wallet.

My license was there.

I'd never reported it missing.

A memory surfaced. Months earlier, I had left my wallet at home during a shift. Brian had brought it to the hospital. Before that, Patricia had been at our house helping him sort paperwork for an insurance renewal.

It seemed insignificant.

Everything seemed insignificant until it didn't.

"Can you tell who made the withdrawals?"

"The teller remembers a woman."

Brian looked at me.

"What did she look like?"

Thomas hesitated. "Similar enough to the identification photograph that the teller did not question it."

"That's not an answer."

"Blonde. Female. Approximately your age."

I had been blonde for most of my adult life.

Patricia looked down at her purse.

Again, the movement was small.

Again, I noticed.

"Was there security footage?"

"The bank's retention system overwrites older recordings unless footage is flagged. We're attempting to recover what remains."

"So someone could have walked in pretending to be me four times and there's no video?"

"We don't know that yet."

Brian spoke quietly. "Did the teller recognize Angela's photograph?"

Thomas nodded. "She believes the customer was Mrs. Brooks."

My husband leaned back.

I could almost see another brick being placed in the wall between us.

"Brian."

He looked at me.

"I was working."

"I know what you're saying."

"What I'm saying?"

"Angela, please."

"No. Say it."

Thomas shifted uncomfortably.

Brian's voice dropped. "I don't know what to believe."

That sentence ended something.

Not the marriage legally.

Not yet.

But something fundamental broke.

I gathered my documents.

"If nine years with me aren't enough to know whether I'm capable of stealing our savings, then maybe the missing money isn't our biggest problem."

Patricia immediately said, "Don't threaten him."

I turned toward her.

"I'm not talking to you."

"You always do this."

"Do what?"

"Turn everything into an attack."

I stared at her.

Thomas finally intervened. "Mrs. Brooks, all of you need to understand that this is now a formal fraud investigation."

Patricia went quiet.

He continued, "If another person impersonated Mrs. Brooks, that person may have committed multiple felonies."

For the first time since we arrived, Patricia looked genuinely uneasy.

We left separately.

Brian went home with his mother.

I went back to the hospital.

Work became the only place where facts still behaved like facts. Blood pressure was a number. Medication had a dose. A wound either improved or didn't. Nobody asked whether I had secretly imagined a missing sixty-one thousand dollars.

My supervisor, Elaine, found me in the break room that evening.

"You look terrible."

"Thank you."

"You know what I mean."

I told her enough to explain why the police might contact the hospital.

She listened without interrupting.

Then she said, "Your time records will clear you."

"I hope so."

"Hope? Angela, I approve your overtime. I know where you were."

I looked at her.

It was the first uncomplicated statement of belief anyone had given me in weeks.

I nearly cried.

The hospital provided clock-in records, security badge logs, medication-system entries, and camera footage showing me moving between floors during the relevant periods.

For three of the withdrawals, the evidence was overwhelming.

For the fourth, there was a problem.

I had left the hospital for nearly ninety minutes.

I remembered why as soon as Elaine showed me the record.

My grandmother had been hospitalized at another facility shortly before she died. I'd used my lunch break and additional approved time to visit her.

The bank withdrawal occurred during that exact window.

When Brian learned this, his attorney later treated those ninety minutes as though they were the missing chapter of a crime novel.

By then, Brian had moved into Patricia's house.

He claimed we needed space.

I came home one evening to find half his closet empty and his toiletries gone.

There was no note.

I called him.

"You moved out?"

"For now."

"You couldn't tell me?"

"I didn't want another fight."

"So you packed while I was at work."

Silence.

"Was this your mother's idea?"

"Stop blaming Mom."

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The answer to a question I had not asked.

Two months after the withdrawals, Brian filed for divorce.

His petition described the marriage as irretrievably broken.

Then came the financial allegations.

He claimed I had removed marital funds without his consent.

I read the paragraph three times.

Then I called him.

"You put it in a court filing."

"Angela—"

"You told a judge I took the money."

"My lawyer said we have to account for it."

"Your lawyer could have written that the money is under investigation."

"He wrote what the bank records show."

"No. The bank records show someone withdrew money. You decided that someone was me."

He exhaled. "What am I supposed to think?"

"Think about who I am."

"I've tried."

That hurt more than shouting would have.

I ended the call.

The next morning I hired Daniel Mercer.

Daniel was not theatrical. He didn't promise revenge, and he didn't tell me what I wanted to hear. He read every page, asked uncomfortable questions, and made me reconstruct months of ordinary life.

Who had access to the house?

Brian.

Patricia.

Who had access to financial documents?

Brian and me.

Possibly Patricia, because she sometimes helped Brian with paperwork.

Who knew my schedule?

Brian.

Patricia often knew when I was working because she called the house looking for Brian.

Who had seen my driver's license?

Anyone who had access to my wallet.

Who knew about my grandmother's ring?

The entire Brooks family had seen it at holidays.

Daniel stopped writing.

"Why does the ring matter?"

"I don't know that it does."

"Tell me about it."

I described the emerald, the narrow gold band, and the tiny inscription my grandfather had placed inside it in 1968.

"Distinctive?"

"Very."

"Would someone who knew you recognize it?"

"Probably."

Daniel tapped his pen once against his notebook.

"Angela, whoever did this didn't merely obtain your account information."

I waited.

"They studied you."

A chill moved over my arms.

Daniel obtained the withdrawal slips and compared them with dozens of genuine signatures. He noticed something none of us had seen.

The forged signatures were visually excellent.

But they were mechanically wrong.

When I wrote the capital A in Angela, my pen moved continuously through the shape. The forged signatures contained a tiny hesitation where the writer had lifted the pen before completing the second stroke.

Someone knew what my signature looked like.

They did not know how my hand produced it.

Daniel hired a handwriting examiner.

The preliminary report supported his suspicion.

Then he found another detail.

The teller who processed the withdrawals was still employed by First Federal.

Her name was Margaret Wilkes.

She had worked at the branch for thirty-one years.

And she remembered the woman.

Daniel met me outside the courthouse before our next hearing.

"She's willing to testify."

I stopped walking.

"About what?"

"Everything she remembers."

"Does she think it was me?"

Daniel's expression remained unreadable.

"She remembers your identification."

"That isn't what I asked."

"She remembers the woman wearing an emerald ring."

The hallway seemed to tilt.

"My ring?"

"Possibly."

I touched the bare finger where I sometimes wore it.

Daniel continued.

"She also remembers perfume, conversations, and something about a vehicle outside."

"What vehicle?"

"We'll let her explain it under oath."

I hated that answer.

Then he handed me a photograph taken from the bank's employee directory.

Margaret Wilkes looked to be in her late sixties, with short silver hair and the composed expression of someone who had spent decades handling other people's money.

"Why would she remember one customer?"

"Because the customer came four times."

I looked at him.

"The same teller handled all four withdrawals?"

"Yes."

That changed everything.

An accidental mistake might happen once.

An impersonator might fool a stranger once.

But somebody had returned to the same woman repeatedly while pretending to be me.

"Daniel, if she sees me and says I'm the person who came in…"

"We deal with that."

"And if she says it wasn't me?"

"Then Brian's accusation starts collapsing."

The hearing began the following morning.

Brian sat with his attorney.

Patricia sat directly behind him.

I had expected her to look confident.

Instead, she kept checking the courtroom door.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

I followed her gaze.

A blonde woman wearing dark glasses had entered the gallery.

I had never seen her before.

She sat alone near the back.

Patricia saw me looking and immediately faced forward.

"Daniel."

He leaned closer.

"Who is that woman?"

He glanced back.

"I don't know."

Patricia's hands were clenched tightly in her lap.

The bailiff called the room to order.

Margaret Wilkes entered.

She was sworn in and took the witness chair.

Daniel began with routine questions about her employment and the bank's identification procedures.

Then he placed my photograph in front of her.

"Mrs. Wilkes, do you recognize this woman?"

She studied it.

"Yes."

My heart pounded.

"Did she withdraw money from the Brooks account?"

Mrs. Wilkes looked toward me.

Then she looked past me.

Her expression changed.

She leaned slightly forward.

"That's strange."

Daniel followed her gaze.

"So did I."

She wasn't looking at me anymore.

She was staring at the blonde woman in the back row.

Daniel asked, "Mrs. Wilkes, what is strange?"

The teller raised one hand and pointed across the courtroom.

"Because that's the woman who came to my window."

Every head turned.

Patricia stood so quickly her chair scraped across the floor.

And before the blonde stranger said a single word, I saw terror flash across my mother-in-law's face.
