I believe that began before I arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flushed.<\/p>\n<p>Steven folded the notice with shaking hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou speak to your lawyer. You follow the process. And for once, I am not going to solve the problem for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would really make us leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to reach for him.<\/p>\n<p>Every instinct I had as his mother told me to fix the pain appearing on his face.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I held still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked me to stay away from your home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I finally understood something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was never your home to give me permission to enter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party collapsed quickly after that.<\/p>\n<p>Guests invented reasons to leave. Conversations became whispers. Parents collected coats and children. The magician packed equipment he had barely unpacked. Catering staff began clearing trays that were still full.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria disappeared upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda stood near the fireplace crying silently.<\/p>\n<p>Steven remained beside the marble table staring at the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw Noah.<\/p>\n<p>He was standing near the staircase holding a small wrapped package.<\/p>\n<p>His expression stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>Confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Not fear exactly.<\/p>\n<p>The confusion of a child who senses adults have broken something but does not know what it is.<\/p>\n<p>He approached slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knelt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, sweetheart?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you mad at me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question went through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Never.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom said you weren\u2019t coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His forehead wrinkled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I do something bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah, none of this is because of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is everybody leaving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced toward Steven.<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes adults make mistakes, and sometimes fixing them makes things messy for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah considered this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan they fix this one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held out the package.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the bottom stair and opened the wrapping carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a small wooden picture frame.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Noah and me three years earlier, both of us laughing while he sat on my lap.<\/p>\n<p>Along the bottom, in crooked letters, he had written that I was the best grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes filled immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the expensive things surrounding us, that little frame was the only object in the room that mattered.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled him against me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind us, someone began crying.<\/p>\n<p>Steven.<\/p>\n<p>I stood after Noah returned to the other children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I faced him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have years to explain, Steven. I\u2019m not going to hear all of it while your son\u2019s birthday decorations are being taken down around us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wiped his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what this would become.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is part of the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stopped looking closely at anything that made your life comfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll give you time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then I picked up Noah\u2019s frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not confuse time with forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I left.<\/p>\n<p>That evening my house felt unusually empty.<\/p>\n<p>I placed Noah\u2019s frame on my desk beside Margaret\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Two generations of my family stared back at me.<\/p>\n<p>One represented everything I had lost.<\/p>\n<p>The other represented everything I was afraid of losing.<\/p>\n<p>Steven called at 6:12.<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Again at 6:19.<\/p>\n<p>Again at 6:41.<\/p>\n<p>Then a message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Mom. Financing. Whether the company would sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mind went back three years.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner at Steven\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria sitting across from me with a glass of wine, asking in an almost casual tone whether the owner might someday give family members the first opportunity to buy.<\/p>\n<p>At the time I had assumed she was making conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Now the memory felt entirely different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteven, did you ever give her documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After we disconnected, I sat alone until nearly four in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>The humiliation at Noah\u2019s party no longer looked like the central problem.<\/p>\n<p>It looked like one move inside something larger.<\/p>\n<p>At 4:11 a.m., I called Eric.<\/p>\n<p>He answered with a groan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is another last-minute addition\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cForget the eviction for the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He became fully awake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want a forensic review of Westside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery payment. Every renovation. Every contractor. Every person given access.
