Repairs to the roof, heating system and lake retaining wall.<\/p>\n<p>The total was more painful than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I regretted spending it.<\/p>\n<p>Because I realized Steven had never once asked who was paying.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning he had.<\/p>\n<p>During the first year in the Westside estate, he called whenever something broke. He worried about charges. He asked whether the investment company might increase the rent.<\/p>\n<p>I had instructed Eric to reassure him.<\/p>\n<p>Then the questions gradually stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Gratitude had become comfort.<\/p>\n<p>Comfort had become assumption.<\/p>\n<p>Assumption had become entitlement so slowly that I had mistaken each step for recovery.<\/p>\n<p>At 12:18 a.m., Eric called back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found the clause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe owner retains access rights for inspections, maintenance, legal compliance and emergencies. There\u2019s also language concerning deliberate obstruction and material misrepresentation of ownership rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould tonight qualify?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictoria isn\u2019t an occupant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteven is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he knowingly supported the exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I terminate the agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially, under the contract, but we follow proper procedure. I don\u2019t want you improvising an eviction because you\u2019re angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re awake after midnight organizing property records because your son banned you from your own house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m irrational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say irrational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were thinking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve represented you for eighteen years. I\u2019ve learned not to think anything about you that I\u2019m unwilling to say aloud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Eric had been Margaret\u2019s friend before he became mine. He knew the circumstances under which I had bought the estate and had repeatedly warned me that secrecy could create problems.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I had insisted Steven needed confidence more than truth.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps Eric had been right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow is Noah\u2019s birthday,\u201d he said. \u201cRemember that before you decide how far this goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boy hasn\u2019t done anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the astronomy book still inside the shopping bag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah is the reason I tolerated this as long as I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric\u2019s tone softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>A landscaping invoice caught my attention.<\/p>\n<p>The oak tree beside the eastern terrace appeared in the attached property diagram.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment the legal dispute vanished, and I was back beside Margaret at the lake years earlier, watching him point toward the slope.<\/p>\n<p>He had died before we could ever build the home we imagined.<\/p>\n<p>After Steven\u2019s financial collapse, buying Westside had seemed like a way to turn loss into something useful.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret\u2019s inheritance would protect our son.<\/p>\n<p>The house would give Steven stability.<\/p>\n<p>The oak would keep a private piece of his father there.<\/p>\n<p>But I had never told Steven any of that.<\/p>\n<p>He thought the estate was simply an extraordinary stroke of luck.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that had been my first mistake.<\/p>\n<p>A gift without a visible giver can eventually look like an entitlement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEric.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBring the ownership records tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo we\u2019re past the stage where I talk you out of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd arrange formal service if the agreement permits termination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That produced a longer silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want officers present?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want witnesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetty, once you do that, this stops being a family disagreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Tonight stopped being a family disagreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear him tapping a pen against his desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did Victoria say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I wasn\u2019t welcome at the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Steven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me not to attend and admitted Amanda and Victoria were already aware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric muttered something I couldn\u2019t make out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said your son is an idiot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s still my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two conditions are not mutually exclusive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed again.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow morning,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll make calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We disconnected.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to sleep at one.<\/p>\n<p>At one twenty, I was still awake.<\/p>\n<p>At one forty-five, I went downstairs.<\/p>\n<p>At two, I made tea I never drank.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:17 a.m., I called Eric again.<\/p>\n<p>He answered immediately this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wondering how long you\u2019d last.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrepare every financial record connected to Westside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause tomorrow Victoria is going to learn who owns the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you certain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the rain sliding down the window and thought about the years I had spent making myself smaller so Steven could feel larger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I added, \u201cCompletely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vehicles began arriving at my home at 7:45 the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>Eric came in his dark blue Mercedes. Two black SUVs followed. A county vehicle pulled up behind them, then a white sedan carrying a notary.<\/p>\n<p>The freezing rain had glazed the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>I watched from the upstairs window as Eric carefully crossed the slick pavement with a leather briefcase tucked under one arm.<\/p>\n<p>When I came downstairs, he looked at my charcoal coat and shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look like you\u2019re going to a board meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two court officers waited near the entrance. The notary stood beside them holding a document case.<\/p>\n<p>Eric lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is your last opportunity to change your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I buttoned my coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He studied me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could get ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt already is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteven may never forgive you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt because it was possible.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up Noah\u2019s wrapped present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing this to punish him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStopping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStopping what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaving him from every consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>We left.<\/p>\n<p>The drive to Westside took twenty-six minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Ice covered the trees, making every branch shine under the gray morning sky. I had made that drive hundreds of times, but that morning each mile seemed to remove another layer of hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>When the estate appeared beyond the bend, my chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Stone columns rose beside tall windows overlooking the frozen lake. The circular drive curved around a fountain. Even in winter, the grounds were immaculate.<\/p>\n<p>I had paid for every inch of it.<\/p>\n<p>More than that, I had chosen much of it.<\/p>\n<p>The eastern terrace.<\/p>\n<p>The library windows.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen layout.<\/p>\n<p>The small sitting room overlooking the water.<\/p>\n<p>Steven knew none of this.<\/p>\n<p>Then we reached the gate.<\/p>\n<p>A banner stretched across the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>HAPPY 8TH BIRTHDAY, NOAH!<\/p>\n<p>Photographs surrounded the lettering.<\/p>\n<p>Noah at school.<\/p>\n<p>Noah at the beach.<\/p>\n<p>Noah with Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>Noah with Steven.<\/p>\n<p>Noah with Victoria and the rest of the Caldwell family.<\/p>\n<p>One enormous photograph showed Steven, Amanda and Noah surrounded by Amanda\u2019s relatives.<\/p>\n<p>I searched twice.<\/p>\n<p>There was no photograph of me.<\/p>\n<p>Eric noticed my expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gate opened when I entered the master access code.<\/p>\n<p>That small mechanical response nearly made me laugh.<\/p>\n<p>The house recognized me even if my family did not.<\/p>\n<p>Cars lined the circular driveway\u2014Mercedes, Range Rovers, Porsches, vehicles polished despite the miserable weather.<\/p>\n<p>A catering truck stood near the service entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was unloading equipment for a children\u2019s magician.<\/p>\n<p>Through the windows I could see gold and blue balloons covering the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is bigger than Steven said,\u201d I murmured.<\/p>\n<p>Eric glanced at the cars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks like Victoria\u2019s guest list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood then why she had cared so much about my presence.<\/p>\n<p>This was not merely Noah\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n<p>It was a performance.<\/p>\n<p>Steven and Amanda were presenting themselves to the world Victoria valued.<\/p>\n<p>Successful business.<\/p>\n<p>Beautiful child.<\/p>\n<p>Magnificent home.<\/p>\n<p>Perfect family.<\/p>\n<p>And I did not fit the picture.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the car door.<\/p>\n<p>Eric came around beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ready?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>I adjusted the wrapped present beneath my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m still going inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Music reached us before we crossed the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>The mansion had been transformed.<\/p>\n<p>A champagne display stood near the ballroom for the adults. A towering birthday cake decorated with gold stars occupied a marble table. Servers moved through the crowd carrying trays while children chased one another between elaborate decorations.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment I simply watched.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw Steven.<\/p>\n<p>He stood beside the fireplace in a tailored navy suit, laughing with two men I recognized from local business publications.<\/p>\n<p>He looked successful.<\/p>\n<p>Confident.<\/p>\n<p>Secure.<\/p>\n<p>Exactly what I had wanted for him six years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>My heart softened despite everything.<\/p>\n<p>Then he saw me.<\/p>\n<p>His smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>He excused himself and crossed the room quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several nearby conversations faded.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda turned.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria turned with her.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>Steven stopped in front of me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you not to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked past him at the high ceiling, the staircase, the lake beyond the enormous windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words traveled farther than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>A few guests turned fully toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked around as though inviting the room to share the joke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetty, whatever point you\u2019re trying to make, this is hardly the appropriate moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept my eyes on Steven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know she was going to tell me I wasn\u2019t welcome here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward Amanda.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me settled.<\/p>\n<p>Not healed.<\/p>\n<p>Settled.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed. \u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor answering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, you\u2019re making this look worse than it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictoria thinks we need boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween me and you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween me and Noah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That was answer enough.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetty, people are watching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suggest you leave before Noah notices this unpleasantness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cruelty of that sentence was almost elegant.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>He had remained several steps behind me, briefcase in hand.<\/p>\n<p>I had imagined this moment throughout the night.<\/p>\n<p>In my imagination I had speeches.<\/p>\n<p>Accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Years of grievances.<\/p>\n<p>Standing there, I wanted none of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll leave,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Steven visibly relaxed.<\/p>\n<p>Then I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut first, there is a legal matter we need to address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His relief vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat legal matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Eric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>The notary followed.<\/p>\n<p>One court officer moved beside them.<\/p>\n<p>The surrounding conversations stopped almost completely.<\/p>\n<p>Victoria stared at Eric\u2019s briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric opened it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Eric Reynolds.
