18 – When Derek Cole’s Name Surfaced in Michael’s Old Security Records, We Learned Patricia’s Fraud Had Been Connected to More Victims Than Ours

I thought Derek Cole was merely another name from Michael’s past.

Then Detective Ortiz called.

“I need to ask about Brooks Family Construction.”

My stomach tightened out of habit.

“I thought we were done with the old company.”

“So did I.”

That was never a reassuring answer.

During the review of Patricia’s frozen accounts, investigators found payments to a business called Cole Recovery Services.

The payments were old.

Some dated back to Michael’s lifetime.

Others continued after his death.

The owner was Derek Cole.

Brian recognized the name immediately.

“Dad worked with him.”

“What kind of work?”

“Security.”

Brian frowned.

“Debt collection too, I think.”

Brooks Family Construction had occasionally used Derek to locate equipment, pursue unpaid commercial debts and investigate theft.

But Derek’s business had a reputation.

Not criminal enough to close.

Not respectable enough to advertise widely.

Daniel’s investigator found civil lawsuits.

Harassment.

Improper collection tactics.

Threats.

One allegation of impersonating a law-enforcement officer, dismissed after witnesses refused to cooperate.

Patricia had paid Derek personally.

Not just the company.

“Why?” I asked.

Ortiz had a theory.

“Information.”

“About whom?”

“Several people.”

My name appeared once.

Rachel’s twice.

Elaine’s repeatedly.

Derek had been another layer in Patricia’s surveillance network.

Warren Pike was the licensed investigator she could document.

Derek handled what she did not want documented.

That discovery reopened parts of the criminal investigation.

Elaine agreed to another interview.

This time she told police something she had previously minimized.

Derek had threatened her.

Not on Patricia’s behalf exactly.

For Patricia’s benefit.

Years earlier, when Elaine demanded more money, Patricia sent Derek to “talk sense into her.”

He waited outside her apartment.

Followed her to work.

Once left a photograph of Rachel’s childhood home in Elaine’s mailbox.

Rachel had been a teenager then.

Elaine understood the message.

“Why didn’t she tell prosecutors before?” I asked.

“Fear,” Ortiz said.

I almost laughed.

Of course.

Fear again.

But this time the fear had a man attached to it.

Investigators subpoenaed Derek’s records.

He resisted.

Then federal agents became interested because his activities crossed state lines.

The picture widened quickly.

Derek had worked for wealthy clients, small businesses and private individuals who wanted pressure applied without asking too many questions.

Some jobs were legal.

Some existed in gray areas.

Some were clearly not.

Patricia had used him for years.

He had located Elaine after she moved.

Tracked Matthew in Arizona.

Monitored Rachel’s adoption search.

And at one point photographed my car outside the hospital.

I looked at the image.

My license plate.

My shift ending after dark.

Another stranger watching me because Patricia had paid him.

But Derek’s connection to Michael mattered more.

Michael owed him money before he died.

Nearly forty thousand dollars.

The debt did not appear in the estate records.

“Why?” Brian asked.

Daniel studied the recovered ledger.

“Looks like off-book work.”

“What kind?”

“We don’t know.”

Derek claimed Michael hired him to investigate missing company funds.

Patricia claimed Michael used Derek for debt collection.

Both could have been true.

After Michael died, Derek demanded payment from Patricia.

She paid him sporadically.

The old hidden account became one source.

Matthew’s transfers another.

Then, years later, Patricia began paying him again.

Around the same time Rachel intensified her search.

“What did he do for her then?” I asked.

Ortiz looked uncomfortable.

“He located people.”

“Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“Anyone else?”

“Elaine.”

Derek had also obtained copies of public and semi-public records.

Property ownership.

Employment histories.

Addresses.

Vehicle information.

Enough to make people feel watched.

Enough to make Patricia feel informed.

The federal investigation uncovered something worse.

Derek kept files.

Not organized well.

But extensively.

Police found them in a rented office after executing a warrant.

Dozens of folders.

Families.

Debtors.

Former spouses.

Business owners.

Photographs.

Account numbers.

Copies of identification.

I saw my name on an evidence inventory.

Not the contents.

I did not want to.

Rachel’s name appeared too.

So did Elaine’s.

But most names were strangers.

That was when Ortiz told me our case was no longer isolated.

Several people had reported suspicious withdrawals after interactions with Derek.

In two cases, relatives had been blamed.

In another, a divorcing spouse was accused of hiding money.

The method was not identical.

But the pattern was familiar.

Obtain personal information.

Create suspicion inside a family.

Move money while everyone looked at each other.

“Did Patricia learn the idea from him?” I asked.

“We don’t know.”

“Or did he learn it from her?”

“We don’t know that either.”

That uncertainty bothered me less than it once would have.

Not every question needed a perfect answer to establish responsibility.

Patricia planned our theft.

Elaine participated.

Derek’s methods may have influenced how Patricia thought about information and pressure.

But the choices remained theirs.

Federal agents arrested Derek six weeks later.

The news ran locally.

Then regionally.

Other alleged victims came forward.

Brian called.

“Did you see?”

“Yes.”

“I feel like Dad opened a door and none of us knew what was behind it.”

“Your father made choices too.”

“I know.”

That answer came quickly now.

No automatic defense.

No reflexive separation between loved person and flawed person.

Brian continued.

“I used to need Dad to be good.”

“What do you need now?”

“To know what he actually did.”

That was healthier.

Harder.

But healthier.

The investigation showed Michael had hired Derek for legitimate business work at first.

Later he used him to investigate Elaine.

Then Patricia.

Then missing company funds.

Everyone was investigating everyone.

No one was talking.

Derek thrived in that environment.

Secrets created demand.

He provided information.

Sometimes accurate.

Sometimes manipulated.

Always expensive.

One recovered invoice interested Daniel.

It showed Michael paid Derek to locate Angela Moreno after she left the company.

My mother’s half-sister.

The date was shortly before Michael became seriously ill.

“Did he find her?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Did Michael contact her?”

“No evidence.”

“Then why locate her?”

“Maybe he wanted to apologize.”

The sealed letter suggested that.

Maybe Michael ran out of time.

Maybe fear stopped him again.

I no longer needed to decide.

Angie had lived her life without Michael’s apology.

Her courage did not depend on whether he eventually understood what he had done.

That realization helped me understand my own relationship with Brian too.

His apology mattered.

His growth mattered.

But my recovery did not require either.

Rachel followed Derek’s case more closely.

“He watched me as a kid.”

That part haunted her.

Derek had not physically harmed her.

But knowing an adult stranger had photographed places connected to her childhood changed how she remembered them.

“I keep looking at old pictures,” she told me, “wondering whether he was nearby.”

“You may never know.”

“I hate that.”

“I know.”

She started therapy.

Brian recommended his therapist’s practice.

Rachel mocked him for becoming an evangelist.

Then booked an appointment.

The first time she returned from a session, she called me.

“I hate it.”

“Excellent.”

“You and Brian are both unbearable.”

“Also excellent.”

She laughed.

The trust scholarship expanded.

Rachel decided to fund five students the next year.

One recipient wrote that the money allowed her to reduce overnight work and spend more time studying.

Rachel showed me the letter.

“This feels better than staring at an investment account.”

“Then keep doing it.”

“I’m still keeping some.”

“You should.”

“Patricia would hate this.”

I looked at her.

“Don’t build your decisions around what Patricia would hate.”

Rachel blinked.

Then nodded.

“Right.”

That was the trap.

Rebellion can still leave the controlling person at the center.

Freedom meant Patricia no longer determined the direction, even negatively.

Elaine learned about Derek’s arrest from prison.

She sent Rachel a letter.

Rachel read this one.

Elaine wrote that Derek had frightened her for years.

She admitted she had used Patricia’s fear while simultaneously being controlled by Patricia’s access to Derek.

Another circle.

Another relationship built on leverage.

Rachel wrote back once.

She did not excuse Elaine.

She asked three questions about her childhood medical history.

Elaine answered them.

That was enough for now.

The federal prosecutor contacted me about Derek.

I was potentially a witness because my identification had been included in one of his files.

I gave a statement.

No dramatic courtroom appearance followed.

Derek eventually entered a plea on several charges related to unlawful access to personal information, extortionate collection practices and financial crimes involving other victims.

My case was referenced as part of the broader pattern but remained primarily Patricia and Elaine’s crime.

I was relieved.

I did not need another trial.

Brian attended one hearing because Michael’s old business records were discussed.

Afterward he came to my townhouse.

He stood outside until I opened the door.

“I brought something.”

“Another box?”

“No.”

He held up a framed document.

It was a copy of the first scholarship announcement from Rachel’s foundation.

At the bottom, in small print, was a dedication.

In recognition of complicated histories, and in support of futures freely chosen.

I smiled.

“She wrote that?”

“Yeah.”

“Very Rachel.”

“She gave me one. Said you should have one too.”

I accepted it.

Brian looked toward my backyard.

The flowers had survived.

Mostly.

“You’ve done a lot with this place.”

“I like it.”

“I can tell.”

He seemed genuinely pleased.

No sadness hidden behind it.

Or at least none he expected me to fix.

“How’s Claire?”

“Good.”

“You told her everything?”

He laughed.

“Not on the first date.”

“Probably wise.”

“She knows now.”

“And she stayed?”

“So far.”

“Good.”

He hesitated.

“I told her about what I did to you.”

That mattered.

Not only what Patricia did.

What Brian did.

“How did she react?”

“She asked what I learned.”

“And?”

“I said that believing someone loves you doesn’t mean you get to stop checking whether you’re treating them fairly.”

I looked at him.

“That’s a good answer.”

“Expensive lesson.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Then he left.

No lingering hug.

No question about us.

We had reached something I once thought impossible.

A relationship with history but no claim.

Months later, Detective Ortiz sent a final courtesy update.

Derek’s files had helped identify additional victims.

Some recovered money.

Some received answers.

Some cases were too old to prosecute.

“That must be frustrating,” I said.

“It is.”

“Does it ever feel finished?”

Ortiz laughed.

“Wrong profession for finished.”

I understood.

Cases close.

Consequences continue.

That evening I looked through the folder where I kept copies of the legal documents.

I found the first divorce petition.

Brian’s accusation.

Sixty-one thousand dollars removed by Angela Brooks.

I read it without shaking.

Then I placed beside it the amended filing withdrawing the allegation.

Two documents.

Two versions of me.

One created by suspicion.

One corrected by evidence.

Neither fully described who I was.

Paper rarely does.

I closed the folder.

Outside, the backyard lights came on automatically.

My father had installed them.

Rachel had left gardening gloves on the patio.

A half-finished book sat on my chair.

Ordinary evidence of an ordinary life.

That was what I wanted now.

Not vindication every morning.

Not another revelation.

Not a perfect ending.

Just days no one else had secretly arranged.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: One Year After the Divorce, Brian Sent the Apology He Had Never Been Able to Say Without Asking Me for Something Back

I thought Derek Cole was merely another name from Michael’s past.
