Four numbers had been written down in his square handwriting, each circled so hard the pen had nearly torn through the paper.<\/p>\n<p>I dropped my keys into the ceramic bowl by the door. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer immediately. He turned the laptop toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Our savings account was open on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>The balance made no sense.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer, still wearing navy scrubs beneath my winter coat. My feet hurt from twelve hours on the cardiac floor, and there was a faint smear of blue ink across the side of my hand where a patient\u2019s chart pen had leaked.<\/p>\n<p>I blinked at the number.<\/p>\n<p>Then I refreshed the page.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian folded his arms. \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m asking you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>There had been a little more than sixty-four thousand dollars in that account. Most of it had taken us years to save. We had talked about using it for the down payment on a house with enough yard for a garden and a garage large enough for Brian\u2019s tools.<\/p>\n<p>Now barely three thousand remained.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled the laptop closer. \u201cThere has to be an error.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I called the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhaustion left my body so quickly it was almost frightening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian tapped the legal pad.<\/p>\n<p>Four withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>They had been made over several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The total was sixty-one thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the dates.<\/p>\n<p>Two of them were Fridays when I had worked day shift. One was a Friday when I had covered another nurse\u2019s schedule and barely left the hospital long enough to eat. The last date fell during a week when Brian had been away on a job in North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward the sink, picked up his coffee, then put it down without drinking. Brian had always been bad at hiding anger. Nine years of marriage had taught me the signs: the rigid shoulders, the careful voice, the way he avoided looking directly at me until he trusted himself not to say something cruel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the bank,\u201d he said, \u201cthe withdrawals were authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second I actually laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because anything was funny. The accusation was simply too absurd to enter my mind properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have withdrawal slips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone made a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith your signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Brian pushed the legal pad toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey told me identification was presented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour driver\u2019s license.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand automatically went toward my purse.<\/p>\n<p>The license was there.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it from my wallet and placed it on the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian barely glanced at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could have had it when you made the withdrawals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me shift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen to what you\u2019re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you\u2019re not. You\u2019re telling me I walked into our bank four separate times, took sixty-one thousand dollars from our savings, hid it somewhere, and then came home every night pretending nothing happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you what the bank told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what to think anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence stayed with me because it sounded reasonable. Tired, frightened, almost vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t yet understand that it was also the first crack in our marriage.<\/p>\n<p>I moved around the counter and reached for the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you calling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey won\u2019t tell you anything different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen they can tell me the same thing themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The customer-service representative transferred me twice before a fraud specialist came on the line. I gave my name, account number, birth date and security information.<\/p>\n<p>Then I asked the simplest question I could think of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere these withdrawals made online?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Mrs. Brooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cATM?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause accompanied by the faint clicking of a keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll four?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt our branch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree were processed at the Cedar Avenue branch. One was processed at First Federal\u2019s downtown location.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brian.<\/p>\n<p>He was watching me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the person show identification?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the transaction notes, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA driver\u2019s license.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone record the number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>It was mine.<\/p>\n<p>I slowly lowered myself into a kitchen chair.<\/p>\n<p>Brian\u2019s expression changed when he saw my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held up one finger and asked the woman another question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have cameras?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll branch locations have security cameras.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen look at them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m afraid I can\u2019t personally access security footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly. If you are disputing the transactions, I can begin the fraud process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am disputing every one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brian stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>The representative explained forms, signatures, investigation periods and documentation. I wrote everything down on the back of Brian\u2019s legal pad, although later I could barely read my own handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Before hanging up, I asked one final question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere the withdrawals all handled by the same employee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t provide employee information over the telephone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat means you can see who processed them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can see transaction codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree appear to have been handled by the same teller.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wrote SAME TELLER across the page.<\/p>\n<p>Brian leaned over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth transaction had been processed by someone else.<\/p>\n<p>That detail seemed insignificant then.<\/p>\n<p>It would matter later.<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, the kitchen became unnaturally quiet. The refrigerator hummed behind us. A truck passed outside, tires whispering against wet pavement.<\/p>\n<p>Brian looked at my notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe report the fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe report it, Brian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you looking at me like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the bank says you were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. The bank says someone using my identification was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith your signature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>I stood so quickly the chair legs scraped across the tile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think I took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that as if it changes your face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere else could sixty-one thousand dollars go, Angela?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou handle most of our finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know the account better than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m the one who checks the bills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you\u2019re the one who had access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression flickered.<\/p>\n<p>Only for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI was out of state for one of those withdrawals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed differently from everything before them.<\/p>\n<p>He wasn\u2019t trying to solve the problem anymore.<\/p>\n<p>He was building an alibi.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the man I had slept beside for nine years and realized he was already arranging the facts into a story.<\/p>\n<p>A story in which the missing money required a thief.<\/p>\n<p>And the thief was me.<\/p>\n<p>That evening I opened every financial record we had.<\/p>\n<p>I checked checking accounts, credit cards, retirement funds, loan statements and transfers. I searched my email for confirmations I might somehow have forgotten.
