The complete packet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators recovered it during a search connected with Hale Residential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything they expected to use January ninth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe power of attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPurchase agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCapacity statement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA proposed distribution sheet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already saw one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis one is more complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow complete?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt includes your investment account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did they plan to leave me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>The final plan was worse than Martin remembered.<\/p>\n<p>After the house resale, debt payments, transfers, fees, and the proposed movement of part of my investments, they expected to place approximately $142,000 under my name for housing and living expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Everything else would be redirected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is everything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel gave me the estimated figure.<\/p>\n<p>More than seven hundred thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I could not speak.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cThere\u2019s one more allocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t a person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHale Residential?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn LLC formed in October.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what investigators are tracing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read it.<\/p>\n<p>Northstar Family Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>I had never heard of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does that matter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the distribution sheet allocates the largest single portion to Northstar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree hundred twenty thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public filing uses a registered agent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you calling me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause investigators found a draft operating agreement with the closing packet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel went quiet for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthstar was supposed to have two members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor and Sloan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSloan is one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is the other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s nine years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy put money in his name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly to disguise control. Possibly to make transfers look like family estate planning.
