If they could produce enough documents, maybe they could claim you had planned all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I wanted to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel heard her through speakerphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is one possible pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mara said, \u201cAnd if Helena objected?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey might characterize the objection as a later change of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr confusion,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody responded.<\/p>\n<p>Because we were all thinking about the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>My hospitalization.<\/p>\n<p>My age.<\/p>\n<p>The questions about whether I could handle finances.<\/p>\n<p>The old trust activated under incapacity.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey needed somebody to say I wasn\u2019t competent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cWe need to check your medical records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if anyone contacted your doctors about capacity, there may be documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone suddenly buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>A message from an unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>No greeting.<\/p>\n<p>Just a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>It showed me asleep in my hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the blue blanket.<\/p>\n<p>The oxygen tubing.<\/p>\n<p>My own face, pale and slack with exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the photograph were six words.<\/p>\n<p>You weren\u2019t as well as you remember.<\/p>\n<p>A second message arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Stop making this worse for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not reply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho sent it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll preserve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>This time it contained an attachment.<\/p>\n<p>A scanned form.<\/p>\n<p>At the top:<\/p>\n<p>PHYSICIAN STATEMENT OF DIMINISHED DECISION-MAKING CAPACITY.<\/p>\n<p>My name was printed beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a doctor\u2019s signature.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>He had treated me in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel enlarged the image.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes moved to the date.<\/p>\n<p>August 19.<\/p>\n<p>One day after Sloan and Victor entered my safe-deposit box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your doctor ever tell you that you lacked capacity?\u201d Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he discuss concerns about your decision-making?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the signature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that real?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s expression was grim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9834\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Doctor Denied Signing the Capacity Form, and a Hospital Visitor Record Finally Revealed Who Had Helped Sloan From the Inside<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel kept his finger on the date printed beside the utility account.
