Closet doors stood open. A phone charger had been left plugged into the wall. The children’s beds were unmade. Sloan’s bathroom counter was almost bare.

They had not gone shopping.

They had packed.

And they had done it under my roof without telling me.

I entered Caleb and Sloan’s bedroom. Even the children’s favorite blankets had been taken.

On the floor near a wastebasket was a folded sheet of paper.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the resort logo.

I picked it up.

It was an itinerary.

Not mine.

Someone had printed a detailed schedule: arrival, dinner, skiing, children’s activities, Christmas breakfast, family photographs.

Beside each event were names.

CALEB.

SLOAN.

Their children.

Sloan’s mother.

Sloan’s father.

Two additional relatives from Sloan’s side.

My name appeared nowhere.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

Until that moment, a small part of me had still been trying to protect Caleb.
