My son Caleb, his wife Sloan, and their two children lived downstairs, which meant there was usually some evidence of them everywhere: a cartoon playing behind a closed door, sneakers abandoned near the stairs, a cabinet shutting, a child asking for juice. That morning there was nothing. I stood in the kitchen with a grocery bag cutting into my fingers and listened until the refrigerator motor became the loudest thing in the room.

“Caleb?” I called.

No answer came from downstairs.

I set the groceries on the counter and checked the driveway through the window. Caleb’s SUV was gone. Sloan’s car was gone too. That was unusual but not alarming by itself. They had mentioned errands. Christmas was tomorrow. People forgot batteries, wrapping paper, cream, medicine, everything. I told myself they had taken both vehicles because they were dividing the shopping.

Then I noticed the luggage closet.

The door stood slightly open. I had passed it twice that morning without paying attention. Now I pulled it wider and stared at the empty shelves. The large blue suitcase was missing. So were Caleb’s black rolling case, Sloan’s cream-colored suitcase, both children’s little travel bags, and the duffel Sloan normally used for weekend trips.

I took out my phone.

Our family group chat was usually ridiculous at this time of year. Caleb sent grocery requests. Sloan posted photographs of things she wanted someone else to buy. The children borrowed their parents’ phones to send strings of emojis. Sloan’s mother and father had been added the previous spring, and lately they participated more than I did.

I opened my messages.

The family chat was gone.

I searched again, thinking I had archived it accidentally. Nothing. I searched Caleb’s name and found our private conversation, but the larger thread where we had planned Christmas dinner had vanished.

A peculiar pressure formed behind my ribs.

I called Caleb.

It rang six times before going to voicemail.

I called Sloan. Straight to voicemail.

Then I called Caleb again.

“Mom?” he answered at last.

There was noise behind him—voices, rolling wheels, an announcement over a speaker.

“Where are you?”

The background went quieter. Not because the noise had stopped. Because Caleb had stopped speaking.

“Caleb?”

“We’re traveling.”

I leaned against the kitchen counter. “Traveling where?”

Another pause.

“Up to the mountains.”

I looked at the food spread across my counter. A turkey. Vegetables. Butter. Two cartons of cream. Ingredients for the stuffing Sloan liked. Chocolate for the children’s dessert. I had spent most of yesterday preparing things they had specifically requested.

“You’re going to the mountains on Christmas Eve?”

“Mom, I thought Sloan told you.”

The sentence was delivered too quickly.

“No.”

“Well, there must have been some confusion.”

“Who is ‘we’?”

He breathed out. “Me, Sloan, the kids.”

I waited.

“And?”

“Her parents.”

There it was.

I walked slowly toward the dining room. The table had already been extended for Christmas dinner. I had polished the serving dishes that morning. Eight places were waiting to be set.

“You took Sloan’s parents?”

“Yes.”

“And the children.”

“Of course.”

“And nobody told me.”

“Mom, don’t say it like that.”

“How should I say it?”

He lowered his voice. “We were going to explain.”

“When?”

“When we got settled.”

“Where?”

Another hesitation.

“The resort.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

Several months earlier, I had booked a Christmas mountain vacation. The reservation was expensive enough that I had nearly changed my mind twice. It covered a large lodge suite, meals, activities, and several rooms. I had made the reservation because Caleb had said the children had never seen a proper mountain Christmas.

The total was $12,500.

I had paid every dollar.

Originally, we had discussed going together.

Then the plans became vague.

Sloan said she needed to check dates. Caleb said he needed to think about work. Her parents might come, then they might not. Eventually nobody mentioned the trip anymore, and I assumed we would stay home instead.

Apparently only one part of the plan had changed.

Me.

“Are you using my reservation?”

Caleb said nothing.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

The room seemed to sharpen around me. I could see a tiny scratch in the dining table, wax caught beneath one candleholder, fingerprints on the glass doors.

“You took the vacation I paid for.”

“Mom—”

“You took your wife, your children and your in-laws on the Christmas vacation I paid for, and you left without telling me.”

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.”

“How was it supposed to happen?”

“Sloan thought—”

“No. I’m asking you.”

He went silent.

I heard one of my grandchildren say something in the background. Sloan answered. Then a man’s voice—her father—said they needed to hurry.

“You’re already there?”

“We just arrived.”

“And when were you going to tell me?”

“I told you, after we got settled.”

“So after you were safely checked into the rooms I paid for.”

“That’s unfair.”

I nearly laughed. “Unfair?”

“Mom, please. The kids are excited.”

I looked at the Christmas tree in my living room. Two wrapped presents for the children sat underneath it. Caleb’s gift was beside them. Sloan’s was tucked behind the tree because the package was oddly shaped.

“Did the children know I wasn’t coming?”

Silence.

That answer hurt more than I expected.

“How long have they known?”

“Mom.”

“How long?”

“A few days.”

“So my grandchildren knew before I did.”

“They’re children.”

“Exactly. Which means someone told them.”

I heard Sloan say, “Give me the phone.”

Caleb moved away from her.

“Mom, we can talk about this later.”

“No.”

“What?”

“We’re talking now.”

His voice hardened slightly. “We are standing outside with luggage. It’s freezing. Can we please do this after we check in?”

I looked toward my laptop on the desk.

Something inside me became unexpectedly calm.

“You’re right,” I said.

Caleb sounded relieved. “Thank you.”

“You should check in.”

“We will.”

“Enjoy the mountains.”

“Mom—”

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I remained beside the table with the phone in my hand.

Then I opened my laptop.

The reservation confirmation was still in my email. I clicked the link and entered the booking number. My name appeared at the top.

HELENA MORGAN.

Primary guest.

Primary payer.

Below it were the rooms, meal package, Christmas activities and payment history.

Paid in full.

$12,500.

I found the cancellation policy.

My pulse began to beat harder.

The reservation had not yet been checked in.

I read the line twice.

Then I called the resort.

A woman named Patricia answered.

I gave her my reservation number and verified my identity.

“Yes, Mrs. Morgan,” she said. “I have the booking here.”

“Has anyone checked in?”

“Not yet.
