Maybe right.<\/p>\n<p>Then, several pages later:<\/p>\n<p>If she does, give her this.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Russell read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne had hidden the ledger for me.<\/p>\n<p>Not out of remorse alone.<\/p>\n<p>Partly revenge.<\/p>\n<p>If Graves betrayed him, Wayne wanted me to destroy Graves.<\/p>\n<p>Even his confession had an angle.<\/p>\n<p>I felt no gratitude.<\/p>\n<p>But evidence did not become less useful because a bad man preserved it for selfish reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The last page contained account totals.<\/p>\n<p>Graves\u2019s estimated hidden gains from Wayne, Daniel, my funds, and other clients.<\/p>\n<p>More than $900,000 at the time Wayne stopped writing.<\/p>\n<p>Decades of investment could easily explain the larger Harper Reserve balance.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed initials beside several amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Not mine.<\/p>\n<p>Other victims.<\/p>\n<p>Keene would have to determine who they were.<\/p>\n<p>The investigator sealed the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Russell and I remained in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Dawn began whitening the window.<\/p>\n<p>I replaced none of the molding.<\/p>\n<p>The exposed cavity looked like a wound in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have told you,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep thinking if I had told you at nineteen\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mama had told me, if Daniel had told me, if Bell had told me\u2014we can build a thousand lives out of if.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know what to do with what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is finally your problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He absorbed it.<\/p>\n<p>Not cruelly.<\/p>\n<p>Not defensively.<\/p>\n<p>Just truth.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Keene.<\/p>\n<p>The preliminary lab comparison on the blood from Mama\u2019s codicil supported Patricia\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p>It was Graves\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, investigators had searched Graves\u2019s medical and financial records.<\/p>\n<p>They found evidence he purchased pills matching the substituted medication found in Daniel\u2019s old files.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Through a third party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you prove he switched Daniel\u2019s medication?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe admits obtaining prescription information for her father.
