He worked there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the stone fireplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keene started issuing instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Police near the lake would check the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Claire grabbed her purse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Keene said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Patricia may be heading toward a property connected to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is exactly why\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood the impulse.<\/p>\n<p>I also understood that curiosity did not stop bullets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wait,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She reluctantly sat.<\/p>\n<p>An hour passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>The basement investigation continued around us.<\/p>\n<p>Russell dozed briefly in a chair.<\/p>\n<p>I could not.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before midnight, Keene received the call.<\/p>\n<p>The cabin had been entered.<\/p>\n<p>Back door forced.<\/p>\n<p>Safe open.<\/p>\n<p>Documents scattered.<\/p>\n<p>No Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>No Graves.<\/p>\n<p>But officers found blood.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough that someone may be injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Keene continued.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle had left tire marks near the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Another had arrived earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Two vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant Graves and Patricia might not have been alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was taken?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was left?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keene looked at Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cassette recorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed from exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keene\u2019s gaze shifted to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer photographed it and transmitted the image.<\/p>\n<p>Keene turned her phone.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting was unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Graves has been lying to Patricia too.<\/p>\n<p>Below it:<\/p>\n<p>Ask her who Wayne made beneficiary of Northstar if Daniel died first.<\/p>\n<p>Claire stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought Dad owned Northstar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keene zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom of the note was another line.<\/p>\n<p>If she learns the answer before you do, she will kill him herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHim?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGraves,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Keene.<\/p>\n<p>Patricia was not simply helping her father flee.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had left a warning that she might turn on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho wrote this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keene did not know.<\/p>\n<p>Then an investigator across the room called her name.<\/p>\n<p>They had recovered data from Patricia\u2019s discarded phone.<\/p>\n<p>Her last completed call had not been to Graves.<\/p>\n<p>It had been to the Center Hill cabin.<\/p>\n<p>A landline.<\/p>\n<p>Duration:<\/p>\n<p>Seven minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The call occurred before police arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho answered?\u201d Claire asked.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>But Patricia\u2019s final outgoing text had been recovered too.<\/p>\n<p>Recipient unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Only six words.<\/p>\n<p>I know what Daddy did to Linda.<\/p>\n<p>I read it again.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Patricia\u2019s role shifted in my mind.<\/p>\n<p>Not innocent.<\/p>\n<p>Never innocent.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps not fully informed either.<\/p>\n<p>Graves had used her the way Wayne used everyone else\u2014feeding her enough truth to secure obedience and hiding the part that might make her rebel.<\/p>\n<p>Then Keene received one more update.<\/p>\n<p>The blood at the cabin had been found beside a torn shirt cuff.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s shirt.<\/p>\n<p>Gray.<\/p>\n<p>Surveillance footage from the bus station showed Graves wearing gray.<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatricia found out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe.<\/p>\n<p>Or someone found both of them.<\/p>\n<p>Keene gathered her coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going to the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time I did not ask to follow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She started toward the stairs, then turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Patricia contacts you, don&#39;t argue with her. Don&#39;t threaten her.
