10 – Daniel’s Daughter Had Been Waiting Years for Someone Named Linda, but the Package Evelyn Left Her Contained a Warning About Graves

Claire Mercer lived twenty minutes from the Briar County courthouse in a pale yellow house shaded by two enormous pecan trees.

We arrived shortly after ten.

I had telephoned first.

I told her my name.

Nothing else.

There had been silence on the line long enough that I thought the call had dropped.

Then she asked, “Linda Harper?”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

“My mother said you might come someday.”

That sentence carried me the rest of the way.

Claire opened the door before we reached the porch.

She was perhaps ten years younger than me.

Tall.

Gray-streaked dark hair.

Daniel’s eyes.

My eyes.

Seeing them in another face stopped me on the second step.

Claire stared too.

Neither of us needed an introduction anymore.

Russell remained near the car.

Claire noticed him.

“Russell?”

“Yes.”

Her expression cooled.

“She mentioned him too.”

That did not sound promising.

We entered.

Claire’s living room contained photographs of Daniel I had never seen.

Daniel holding a fishing rod.

Daniel at Christmas.

Daniel with a little girl sitting on his shoulders.

My father had lived an entire life adjacent to mine.

I had existed in the margins of his photographs while he occupied the margins of my childhood.

Claire followed my gaze.

“You knew him?”

“I thought I did.”

She nodded.

“That's probably true for both of us.”

We sat.

I told her Mama had died.

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I'm sorry.”

“You knew her?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“After Dad died.”

That surprised me.

Claire said Evelyn brought her to Mama’s house.

Mama told her almost nothing.

Only that Daniel had made mistakes and that some financial matters remained unresolved.

Claire assumed it concerned business.

“Did your mother ever tell you Daniel had another child?”

Claire looked directly at me.

“Three years before she died.”

My throat tightened.

“So you know.”

“I know you're my sister.”

The word landed strangely.

Sister.

At my age, after a lifetime believing Russell was my only sibling, the family tree had moved beneath my feet.

Claire went to a cabinet and removed a wooden document case.

“Mom told me never to open this unless you came.”

“You've had it how long?”

“Nine years.”

“You never looked?”

“She sealed it.”

I almost laughed.

“Our mothers had a remarkable faith in envelopes.”

Claire smiled despite herself.

Then her expression changed.

“She was afraid of Graves.”

“Why?”

“She thought he was watching the account.”

“What account?”

Claire stared.

“You know about it?”

“Not enough.”

She placed the case between us.

The seal had Evelyn’s signature across it.

Claire broke it.

Inside were legal documents.

A bank statement.

A letter.

And a key.

I recognized the successor bank’s name from Mama’s recording.

The account existed.

Balance at Evelyn’s death:

$501,883.

I stared at the number.

Claire whispered, “That was Dad’s money?”

“Originally mine.”

Her face changed.

I explained.

Not every detail.

Enough.

The accident.

The settlement.

Wayne.

Daniel’s involvement.

The insurance policy.

The impersonation.

Mama confirming Evelyn’s false identity.

Claire listened without interruption.

When I finished, she looked ill.

“My mother pretended to be you?”

“Yes.”

“She never told me that.”

“I don't think she was proud of it.”

Claire opened Evelyn’s letter.

It was addressed jointly.

To Claire and Linda.

Evelyn wrote that she had spent years resenting me for existing.

Then years feeling ashamed of that resentment.

Daniel had betrayed her.

I had not.

By the time she understood the distinction, too much damage had already been done.

She admitted impersonating me.

She admitted helping conceal the insurance payout.

But she insisted the intention had always been to preserve the money.

Graves persuaded her that direct payment to me would alert Wayne.

He created Northstar Holdings as an investment vehicle.

For a time, the arrangement worked.

Then Graves began taking fees.

Large ones.

Evelyn objected.

Graves threatened to expose the fraud.

Again the same trap.

Evelyn eventually forced him to sign an agreement acknowledging that the underlying funds belonged beneficially to me.

The agreement was inside the case.

I unfolded it.

There it was.

My name.

Linda Marie Harper.

Graves’s signature.

Notarized.

This notary was real.

Claire leaned over my shoulder.

“So he admitted it.”

“Yes.”

“Then the money is yours.”

“Maybe.”

The bank statement was nine years old.

A lot could happen in nine years.

I examined the key.

Safe-deposit key.

Different bank.

Evelyn’s letter said the box contained original documents Graves could not explain away.

She warned us not to confront him until those documents were secured.

Then came a sentence underlined twice.

Mitchell knows Wayne’s records were incomplete. He does not know Daniel made copies of everything.

I looked at Russell.

He had moved closer.

“What copies?”

Claire continued reading.

Daniel had documented Wayne’s financial activities for years.

Not merely my settlement.

Other victims.

Other accounts.

Other forged documents.

Graves helped clean up several transactions.

If exposed, the consequences would reach beyond my family.

“That's why he's still fighting,” Russell said.

“Not just for my money.”

“No.”

Claire reached the final paragraph.

Evelyn wrote that if Graves ever claimed I was dead, it meant he had decided nobody remained who could contradict him.

I felt cold.

That was exactly what he had done.

“He thought Mama’s death cleared the board,” I said.

“And he thought you wouldn't appear,” Claire replied.

“Why?”

She looked at me carefully.

“Because he was told you were dead.”

“By whom?”

“Mom didn't know.”

That question mattered.

Graves had filed the false trust claim before Mama died.

Someone had told him I was dead while I was very much alive.

Someone with access to Russell’s old identification.

Someone who knew enough about the family to make the claim plausible.

Russell shook his head.

“Not me.”

“I know.”

“You believe me?”

“About this.”

He accepted the limitation.

We went to the bank.

Claire was the registered box holder.

Evelyn had added her years earlier.

Inside were several thick folders.

Daniel’s copies.

One folder concerned me.

Others carried unfamiliar names.

Businesses.

Families.

Individuals.

I did not open those.

My life had already taught me what damage could be done when people decided another person’s privacy belonged to them.

My folder contained the original insurance policy.

The beneficial ownership agreement.

Correspondence between Graves and Evelyn.

And one document that made Claire sit down.

A transfer instruction.

If Evelyn died before Linda claimed the account, ownership was to pass temporarily to Claire as custodian.

Not beneficiary.

Custodian.

Claire looked at me.

“I never knew.”

“Did you receive anything?”

“No.”

We checked the bank account.

The teller could not provide information immediately.

An officer met us.

After reviewing the documents, she made several calls.

Then she returned with a grave expression.

The account had been closed.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

The same time Graves filed the false claim against my land trust.

My heartbeat quickened.

“Who closed it?”

“Someone presenting authority from the estate of Evelyn Mercer.”

Claire stood.

“I am her executor.”

The officer nodded.

“We have your estate documents on record.”

“Then how?”

“A court order was presented.”

“What court order?”

She printed a copy.

The document authorized release of the account to settle an undisclosed estate obligation.

Judge’s signature.

Case number.

Claire called the county clerk.

No such case existed.

Forged again.

“How much was transferred?” I asked.

The officer hesitated.

“All of it.”

“Where?”

“To an escrow account.”

“Controlled by whom?”

She turned the page.

Mitchell Graves.

Claire closed her eyes.

I felt something different from anger.

Clarity.

Graves was no longer merely defending old crimes.

He was committing new ones.

Now.

Against living people.

Detective Keene answered on the first ring.

I explained.

“Don't leave the bank,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because we just found Graves.”

“Where?”

“His office.”

“Then arrest him.”

“We can't yet.”

“Why not?”

“Because he's not there.”

I frowned.

“You said you found him.”

“We found what he left.”

Graves’s office had been emptied overnight.

Computers gone.

Files removed.

Safe open.

His car remained behind.

On his desk investigators found one envelope.

Addressed to me.

I drove back with Russell and Claire.

Keene met us outside Graves’s building.

She handed me the envelope in a clear evidence sleeve.

“We photographed it.”

I read through the plastic.

Linda—

Beverly lied to you more than I ever did.

If you want your money, stop looking at Wayne and ask who benefited from keeping you ignorant after he died.

No signature.

None needed.

Russell read it.

His face hardened.

“He's trying to turn you against Mama.”

“Maybe.”

“You believe him?”

“I believe liars sometimes use true things.”

Keene nodded.

“Good rule.”

I looked again at the message.

After Wayne died.

That phrase mattered.

Wayne could explain the original theft.

He could explain the accident.

He could explain the threats.

But Wayne could not explain actions committed after his death.

The false insurance claim had happened after Daniel died but while Wayne lived.

The recent trust fraud had not.

Someone else had continued the machinery.

Graves, certainly.

But perhaps not alone.

“Who benefited?” Claire asked.

I thought of the stolen insurance account.

Graves.

Northstar.

Fees.

Properties.

Then another possibility.

“Who inherited Wayne’s estate?”

Russell answered.

“Mama.”

“And after Mama?”

He looked at me.

“Us.”

“No.”

I remembered Mama’s will.

Russell had been the one handling probate.

“Who exactly?”

He went pale.

I saw the answer before he spoke.

“Mostly me.”

Claire stared at him.

Russell raised both hands.

“I didn't know.”

I believed his surprise.

But belief was no longer enough.

I turned to Detective Keene.

“I want Mama’s probate file.”

Russell swallowed.

“Linda.”

“What?”

“There is something you should know before you see it.”

I waited.

He looked suddenly ashamed again.

“Three weeks ago, Mama changed her will.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Mama’s Last
