Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer\u2019s name made my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall before you leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dialed.<\/p>\n<p>A woman answered after three rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMercer &amp; Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Linda Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere have you been?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was so unexpected that I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently looking in all the wrong places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Beverly with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman inhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came here last month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast month?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left a file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of file?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour original settlement agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then the woman continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a confession signed by Wayne Harper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell heard.<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat confession?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;d rather explain when you arrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m leaving for Memphis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen come here first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause there is also a police report from the night you were injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at my leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice report?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother preserved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My voice barely worked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want to summarize a document like this over the telephone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it say Wayne pushed me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my hand against the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Russell turned away.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, his confession had independent support.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had seen it.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had documented it.<\/p>\n<p>And Wayne, apparently, had eventually confessed.<\/p>\n<p>The woman told me to come immediately.<\/p>\n<p>We left Carol\u2019s office with the flour tin, Mama\u2019s papers, and the brass key.<\/p>\n<p>In the parking lot, Russell stopped beside my car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to do this tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve already learned enough to know Wayne was responsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you were prepared to destroy whatever is in that unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Wayne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf finding out how much I helped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not an excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Something closer to truth.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the passenger door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re coming with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell did not move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I&#39;m done carrying the consequences of choices other people made for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>We drove to Mercer &amp; Hall before heading toward Memphis.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who met us had a file ready.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay the original settlement agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The amount matched Carol\u2019s records.<\/p>\n<p>$186,400.<\/p>\n<p>There was also an old police report describing witness uncertainty, conflicting statements, and suspicion that my fall into the truck\u2019s path might not have been accidental.<\/p>\n<p>Then came Wayne\u2019s confession.<\/p>\n<p>His signature appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>I could not read all of it at once.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted pushing me.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted taking the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted using Daniel to move funds.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted threatening Mama.<\/p>\n<p>And he admitted that Russell knew enough to expose him.<\/p>\n<p>I looked across the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy wasn&#39;t this used?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney explained that Mama obtained the confession much later.
