When Mama attempted to stop them, Wayne told her that Russell would disappear if she contacted police.<\/p>\n<p>Mama believed him.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the sentence that broke whatever remained of my certainty.<\/p>\n<p>Russell knew the threat was a lie.<\/p>\n<p>I read further.<\/p>\n<p>He knew the money belonged to me.<\/p>\n<p>He knew Wayne was stealing it.<\/p>\n<p>And he helped anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I stood so abruptly the chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to talk to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carol rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda, there is more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve had enough people deciding when I can hear the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked into the lobby.<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Wayne stole my settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet&#39;s go home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People at the reception desk had begun pretending not to listen.<\/p>\n<p>I held up the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you carrying this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stared.<\/p>\n<p>His face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou shouldn&#39;t have that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>What replaced it was worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said the envelope you carried to Daniel was an accident.
