A young teller smiled professionally when I approached, then glanced at the battered container beneath my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to speak with someone about my mother\u2019s account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course. Her name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeverly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gave Mama\u2019s full name.<\/p>\n<p>The teller typed.<\/p>\n<p>Her smile disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>She checked the screen again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you excuse me for a moment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked away.<\/p>\n<p>I stood holding the flour tin while two customers completed their transactions beside me.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later, a gray-haired man emerged from a hallway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Harper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Gerald Watts, branch manager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at the tin.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease come with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His office overlooked the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Before I sat, Gerald closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother told us you might come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words sent a chill through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I set the tin on his desk.<\/p>\n<p>Gerald stared at it with the uncomfortable recognition of someone seeing an object previously described in detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you about this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I removed the sealed sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said I should open this here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape cracked as I peeled it back.<\/p>\n<p>Mama\u2019s final page contained an attorney\u2019s name, a reference number, and instructions for the bank to release documents she had deposited there.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom she had written one sentence that made my hands cold.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let Russell take these papers.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she write that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald did not answer directly.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he unlocked a cabinet behind his desk and removed a folder.<\/p>\n<p>The tab carried Mama\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photocopies of checks, statements, letters, and documents bearing dates I recognized from the year of my accident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother brought these gradually,\u201d Gerald said. \u201cShe was trying to reconstruct transactions that occurred decades ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransactions involving my settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have authority to interpret all of these records for you. Your mother arranged for an attorney to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGerald.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He met my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Wayne lying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow badly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you should speak to the attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed my chair back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve waited sixty years without knowing I was waiting. Please don&#39;t protect me from information that belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Then he opened the folder.<\/p>\n<p>The documents were incomplete, but enough remained to show that the story Wayne told me could not possibly have been true.<\/p>\n<p>There had been a protected account.<\/p>\n<p>There had been withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>There had been transfers.<\/p>\n<p>And Mama had spent years trying to trace them.<\/p>\n<p>One name appeared repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>I knew Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>He had been Wayne\u2019s closest friend.<\/p>\n<p>When I was young, Daniel came to our house on Sunday afternoons carrying whiskey for Wayne and peppermints for me. He called me Little Bird.<\/p>\n<p>He had been dead for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is Daniel Mercer on these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan&#39;t or won&#39;t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan&#39;t. I don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald slid a business card across the desk.<\/p>\n<p>CAROL BENNETT.<\/p>\n<p>An address was printed beneath her name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has the records your mother wanted preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe worked with the attorney handling some of the old banking matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at Mama\u2019s sealed page.<\/p>\n<p>The last paragraph instructed me to take the flour tin to Carol.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely the letter.<\/p>\n<p>The tin itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy does everyone care about this thing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald gave a tired smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked your mother that once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat when you finally opened it, you would understand why she couldn&#39;t tell you the truth while Wayne was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wayne had been dead for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why didn&#39;t she tell me afterward?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerald&#39;s expression softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that&#39;s one of the questions she was trying to answer before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I left the bank with more questions than I had carried inside.<\/p>\n<p>Russell was sitting in Mama\u2019s kitchen when I returned.<\/p>\n<p>Two cups of coffee waited on the table.<\/p>\n<p>He pushed one toward me.<\/p>\n<p>I remained standing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell&#39;s fingers stopped around his cup.<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t heard that name in years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne and Daniel did business together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel received money connected to my settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt my anger settle into something colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t ask whether that was true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked who told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood and paced toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, dusk had begun gathering beneath the trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne owed people money,\u201d Russell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gambled. He borrowed. He made deals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith my settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know exactly what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew he touched it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama wrote that you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama was carrying guilt. Maybe she remembered things differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s dead, so that&#39;s convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFair?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word surprised both of us.<\/p>\n<p>I pointed toward my leg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know what I could have done with that money when I was eighteen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn&#39;t afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made a good life anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t absolve the people who took choices away from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t take anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop defending the people who did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell sat.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, he looked old to me.<\/p>\n<p>Not older.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard arguments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama and Wayne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter your accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long after?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart thudded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t remember every word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell rubbed his palms together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne kept saying the money had to be moved. Mama said it belonged to you. Daniel came over several times. There were papers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you never told me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were recovering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor sixty years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I sat opposite him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you carry anything for Wayne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>The silence lengthened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA bank envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you take it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never asked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWayne told me it was paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He had been old enough to know secrecy from ordinary family business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell Mama?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said she knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you believed him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last two words mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell stood again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t want to do this tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen when did you stop believing him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>I followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen, Russell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped beside a framed family photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Mama stood in the center. Wayne had one arm around her. Russell was behind them.<\/p>\n<p>I was beside Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen.<\/p>\n<p>Smiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped believing him,\u201d Russell said quietly, \u201cwhen I saw how much money was in the envelope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you never opened it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how did you see the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe envelope tore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThousands?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you still delivered it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Daniel Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell finally turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Wayne scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd because by then I knew he was capable of doing things none of us wanted to believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt a chill despite the warm kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russell&#39;s gaze dropped toward my damaged leg.<\/p>\n<p>He caught himself too late.<\/p>\n<p>I moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you know about my accident?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked at my leg.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He grabbed his jacket from the chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need some air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He left through the front door.<\/p>\n<p>I did not follow.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I returned to the table and opened Mama\u2019s papers again.<\/p>\n<p>Near the bottom of the folder Gerald had given me was a handwritten appointment note.<\/p>\n<p>Carol Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>10:00 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had scheduled it before she died.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath, in her trembling handwriting, she had added:<\/p>\n<p>Bring Russell if he will come.<\/p>\n<p>Do not tell him what Carol has.<\/p>\n<p>I read the line three times.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked toward the dark front porch where my brother had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Mama had known exactly how Russell would react.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant whatever waited in Carol Bennett&#39;s office had not been prepared merely to expose Wayne.<\/p>\n<p>It had been prepared for Russell too.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9761\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Mama\u2019s Attorney Opened a Thirty-Eight-Year-Old Bank File, and One Number Turned Wayne\u2019s Old Lie Into Something Far More Dangerous<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First County Bank had changed buildings twice since my childhood, but the name remained familiar enough to make me uneasy as I parked beneath its blue-and-white sign.
