I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt foolish.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Reyes watched remotely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry phrases he may recognize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Ryan.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s the drive, Winston?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bird preened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes leaned closer to her camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGarage, Winston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHas he said that before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tried another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Chloe do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winston bobbed his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t break it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho said don&#39;t break it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRyan mad!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes began taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned toward the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did Chloe put it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The parrot clicked his beak.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrive drive drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocker! Bad Chloe!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reyes looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Ryan\u2019s key.<\/p>\n<p>317 had not been a locker number.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps there was another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinston, what locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bird whistled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlue locker where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoat! Boat! Boat!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe said she threw the drive into the ocean from a marina.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe she had gone to the marina.<\/p>\n<p>But not to destroy it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich boat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winston spread his wings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy\u2019s boat!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan did not own a boat.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur once had.<\/p>\n<p>A twenty-two-foot fishing boat he sold\u2014or claimed to sell\u2014eight years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Michael.<\/p>\n<p>He had gone completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur never sold the boat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe transferred it to a holding company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe used it occasionally to meet investors privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael reached for his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarina Del Sol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Reyes was already moving.<\/p>\n<p>Police reached the marina forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>The boat remained registered under the holding company.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the cabin was a narrow blue locker.<\/p>\n<p>It was locked.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators obtained authorization to open it.<\/p>\n<p>At 8:23, Detective Reyes called me on video.<\/p>\n<p>She wore gloves.<\/p>\n<p>Behind her, the boat cabin was cramped and dim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found a hard drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart hammered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it damaged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAppears intact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it Arthur\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beside it lay another object.<\/p>\n<p>A silver cylindrical bottle.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lifted it carefully.<\/p>\n<p>The label had been removed.<\/p>\n<p>But scratched into the bottom were two initials.<\/p>\n<p>S.P.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Preston.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe had not thrown Arthur\u2019s evidence into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>She had hidden it on Arthur\u2019s boat.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the missing silver bottle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she keep that?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then an officer called her attention to something beneath the locker shelf.<\/p>\n<p>A plastic evidence pouch.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were several torn pages.<\/p>\n<p>Red paper edges.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s missing notebook pages.<\/p>\n<p>Preston had taken them from Box 317.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow Chloe ended up with them.<\/p>\n<p>Reyes unfolded the first page.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had written a date.<\/p>\n<p>The day before his death.<\/p>\n<p>Then a sentence.<\/p>\n<p>S.P. gave me the drops after I said no.
