I should leave her alone.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Not first saw.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Next entry.<\/p>\n<p>Cannot.<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had watched me before the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>The apples.<\/p>\n<p>The smile.<\/p>\n<p>The beginning of our marriage had been constructed around guilt.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something inserted between the pages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>She opened it.<\/p>\n<p>It was a receipt from an auto-body shop.<\/p>\n<p>Dated two days after Daniel died.<\/p>\n<p>Repair: front bumper, right headlight, hood alignment.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle owner: Arthur Miller.<\/p>\n<p>The detectives stopped the reading.<\/p>\n<p>One stepped out to make a call.<\/p>\n<p>I sat without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence did not prove Arthur intentionally killed Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>But it destroyed the accident story.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s vehicle had made contact with my brother\u2019s motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>He had repaired the damage.<\/p>\n<p>He had hidden it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he entered my life.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian squeezed my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to scream.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s on the cassette?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detectives returned.<\/p>\n<p>They allowed it to be played after documenting the tape.<\/p>\n<p>Static filled the conference room.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Forty-four years vanished.<\/p>\n<p>My brother sounded young.<\/p>\n<p>Angry.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI licensed material the university already controlled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy notebooks are not university property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou built the system there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou copied Eleanor\u2019s hospital diagrams too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel knew.<\/p>\n<p>He had been protecting my work as well as his.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said something indistinct.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything happens to me, Michael has everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>A door.<\/p>\n<p>Wind.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel spoke directly into the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEllie, if you ever hear this, I\u2019m sorry I dragged your work into mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My breath broke.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were right about matching patients before any of us. Don&#39;t let somebody turn your idea into proof that you owe them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Ended.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed both hands over my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had left me a message.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had hidden it for forty-four years.<\/p>\n<p>Not destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction felt almost crueler.<\/p>\n<p>Michael was crying silently.<\/p>\n<p>I did not comfort him.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret spoke gently through the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor, there\u2019s one more item.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sealed envelope lay beneath the notebooks.<\/p>\n<p>Not Arthur\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>My name was written across it.<\/p>\n<p>ELLIE \u2014 THIRD DRAWER, LIKE ALWAYS.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed and sobbed at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective did.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel wrote that Arthur had been pressuring him to transfer rights.<\/p>\n<p>He said Michael had copies of their research records.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was going to confront Arthur and then go to police.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom was a sentence that changed the legal meaning of everything.<\/p>\n<p>If Arthur says the work was his, check the patent draft. He signed as witness, not inventor.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked toward the detectives.<\/p>\n<p>One nodded.<\/p>\n<p>They understood.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had not merely borrowed ideas.<\/p>\n<p>He had knowingly claimed work he had witnessed Daniel create.<\/p>\n<p>The company fortune rested on a lie.<\/p>\n<p>My eleven million dollars was not simply an inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>It was proceeds from something taken from my brother and me.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Michael.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about the patent draft?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you believe me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first answer from him that did not anger me.<\/p>\n<p>The ship\u2019s intercom chimed faintly outside.<\/p>\n<p>Passengers were being reminded of departure time.<\/p>\n<p>Nassau had become a backdrop to a forty-four-year-old crime.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret began cataloging the remaining documents.<\/p>\n<p>Then one detective held up the red notebook again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are pages missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked closer.<\/p>\n<p>Near the back, several sheets had been torn out.<\/p>\n<p>Cleanly.<\/p>\n<p>Recently.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was that box last accessed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bank officer checked.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho accessed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The officer looked toward the computer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn authorized deputy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Samuel Preston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Preston had entered Arthur\u2019s safe-deposit box after Arthur died.<\/p>\n<p>Before Michael gave me the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Before Ryan stole the key.<\/p>\n<p>Before I knew any of it existed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was on those missing pages?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Michael stared at the torn edge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur kept a private medication log during his final months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would that be in a notebook about Daniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause near the end, he started recording everything in one place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would the missing pages show?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery drug Preston gave him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer settled over us.<\/p>\n<p>Preston had not entered Box 317 to hide Daniel\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>He had removed pages that might explain Arthur\u2019s.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9694\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Pages Preston Tore From Arthur\u2019s Notebook Were Gone, but a Forgotten Hospital Habit Had Left Another Record Hidden in Plain Sight<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bahamian officer would not hand me the key.
