Give it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>I broke the seal.<\/p>\n<p>Five handwritten pages were folded inside.<\/p>\n<p>The first began with my name.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur knew about the cruise.<\/p>\n<p>He knew why I had booked it.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted that my sacrifices had made his life comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted the MediTrack system had originated with me.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted he had enjoyed controlling what I knew.<\/p>\n<p>The apology I had waited forty years to hear arrived from a dead man.<\/p>\n<p>By the second page, I was crying.<\/p>\n<p>By the fourth, I was furious.<\/p>\n<p>Then I reached the final page.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur warned me never to allow Ryan or Chloe to control my medical decisions.<\/p>\n<p>He named Dr. Preston.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>I kept reading.<\/p>\n<p>Two nights before Arthur died, Ryan had come to the house after I went to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Preston came with him.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur claimed they believed he was too weak to understand their conversation.<\/p>\n<p>He heard Ryan ask how quickly a new medication would work.<\/p>\n<p>Preston allegedly answered that the result would appear natural.<\/p>\n<p>The page shook in my hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur died two days later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas there an autopsy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Preston had certified the death as natural.<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph loaded.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan stood in an airport beside Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Preston was with them.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan held a folder.<\/p>\n<p>TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP ORDER.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the photograph was a message.<\/p>\n<p>They would be waiting in Nassau.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re bringing Preston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot leave this ship with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The security officer&#39;s radio crackled.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe captain needs to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court order has arrived.
