She was seventy-one, recently divorced, disliked raisins, loved detective novels, and had once ridden a motorcycle through Arizona because her former husband told her she would never dare.<\/p>\n<p>By the time breakfast ended, I knew more about her than I knew about some neighbors I had lived beside for twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>At 9:15, Ryan sent me a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Both dogs were pulling him toward his apartment entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Princess&#39;s carrier sat beside Chloe, whose cheek bore a fresh scratch.<\/p>\n<p>Winston perched on Ryan&#39;s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>The message beneath the photograph said they had missed their flight.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Once, I would have apologized.<\/p>\n<p>I would have called the airline.<\/p>\n<p>I might even have offered to pay the change fee.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I wrote four words.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you learn.<\/p>\n<p>Then I blocked his number.<\/p>\n<p>At 10:30, Chloe emailed.<\/p>\n<p>The subject accused me of ruining the family.<\/p>\n<p>I deleted it unopened.<\/p>\n<p>At noon, I returned to my cabin and stepped onto the balcony.<\/p>\n<p>By then, the buyers had taken possession of the house.<\/p>\n<p>The champagne bottle waited in its bucket.<\/p>\n<p>A welcome card lay beside it.<\/p>\n<p>I touched my pearl earrings.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Arthur died, nobody needed me.<\/p>\n<p>The sensation was almost frightening.<\/p>\n<p>Then the cabin telephone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Only ship employees had that number.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Miller?\u201d a man from guest services said. \u201cWe need you downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a gentleman asking to see you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know anyone named Michael Grant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe expected you to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the receiver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has identification, a sealed letter, and a photograph of your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat photograph?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The employee hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows Mr. Miller standing beside him on this ship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had never taken a cruise.<\/p>\n<p>Not once.<\/p>\n<p>The employee lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Miller, according to the date on the photograph, it was taken six months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six months ago, Arthur had claimed he could barely leave the house.<\/p>\n<p>Six months ago, I had canceled my own appointments because he said he could not be alone.<\/p>\n<p>Six months ago, I had secretly purchased my ticket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does this man want from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another voice answered in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Male.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur sent me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the receiver harder against my ear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy husband is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would he send you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stranger&#39;s next words changed the shape of everything I thought I understood about Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your husband knew what Ryan was planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9688\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: A Stranger Carried Proof of Arthur\u2019s Secret Life, and the Fortune Behind It Put My Son\u2019s Strange Behavior Into Focus<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ryan&#39;s anger came through the phone so loudly that Vivian lowered her coffee cup. \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d I leaned back in my chair. \u201cCan you narrow that down?\u201d \u201cThe &hellip;
