conversation was uncomfortable.

I disclosed the unauthorized rentals immediately.

The representative asked dates, number of stays, whether money changed hands, whether any claims handled most of the conversation.

The insurer requested the court order, rental listing records, access logs and correspondence showing my lack of consent.

For the first time, all the evidence we had collected served a purpose beyond proving Derek wrong.

It protected me.

Robert would have appreciated that.

He loved documentation.

“Paper quiet.

I opened every window.

Warm air moved through the rooms.

Then I walked to the dock.

The damaged board had been replaced.

Derek had repaired it after Aaron’s injury.

The new plank was slightly lighter than the others.

I stood looking at it for a long time.

A man had fallen through my dock.

Bled there.

Gone to urgent care.

And I had known nothing.

I sat at the end with my feet above the water.

Robert and I used to drink coffee there at dawn.

He once dropped his wedding ring between the boards while cleaning a fish.

We spent two hours retrieving it with magnets, wire and increasingly creative profanity.

That memory made me laugh.

Then cry.

Not because Derek had commercialized the cabin.

Not only that.

Because he had taken away my ability to know what had happened in my own home.

Ownership is partly responsibility.

I had always accepted that.

If the roof leaked, I repaired it.

If a tree became dangerous, I removed it.

If the dock failed, I fixed it.

Derek wanted the benefits of control while leaving the deepest responsibilities attached to me.

I sat there until sunset.

Then headlights appeared near the road.

For one frightened second I thought Derek had returned.

It was Elaine.

She got out slowly.

I remained on the dock.

She approached but
