This is grown-up stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Grandma isn\u2019t mad at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Longer pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, Claire stood with her back to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were kicking us out of the family cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My anger flared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that because of you, they can\u2019t go anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told a nine-year-old that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Grandma changed her mind about sharing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I rubbed my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>Derek\u2019s strategy was becoming clear.<\/p>\n<p>If legal authority was against him, he would move the argument into emotion.<\/p>\n<p>He would make boundaries look like cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>He would make ownership look selfish.<\/p>\n<p>He would make consequences look like punishment.<\/p>\n<p>I had watched people do that before.<\/p>\n<p>Just never inside my own family.<\/p>\n<p>Claire called him.<\/p>\n<p>This time she did not use speakerphone.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice was controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not talk to Lily or Owen about the cabin dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I could hear him shouting faintly.<\/p>\n<p>She waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More shouting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then her expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean you\u2019re picking them up?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the clock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re with Sarah until tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, they\u2019re staying there tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you were home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire\u2019s face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ended the call and immediately dialed Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall Lily,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Owen did not have a phone.<\/p>\n<p>Claire called Sarah a third time.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she answered.<\/p>\n<p>Claire put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah sounded confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, I was about to call you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre the kids there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire gripped the counter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek picked them up about twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou let him take them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s their father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s voice became alarmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said you knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did he say he was taking them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHome, I thought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire called Derek.<\/p>\n<p>Straight to voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the family location app.<\/p>\n<p>Derek had disabled sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s tablet was offline.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew I was staying here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCall the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then a message appeared from Derek.<\/p>\n<p>Stop panicking. The kids are with me.
