Punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the rental sign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisol interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe smart lock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>She held up the access report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane\u2019s owner access was revoked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was fixing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed the administrator hierarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system wasn\u2019t working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt worked for the guests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Richard finally stepped toward his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me she gave you permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m done helping you explain this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda whispered her husband\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Richard ignored her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told us Diane wanted you to manage the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou heard what you wanted to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I heard my son lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek turned away.<\/p>\n<p>The silence afterward was heavier than shouting.<\/p>\n<p>I thought the confrontation had finally reached its limit.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire walked into the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>A minute passed.<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>She returned carrying a black binder.<\/p>\n<p>The instant Derek saw it, his face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was beside the desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire, give it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were spreadsheets.<\/p>\n<p>Reservation dates.<\/p>\n<p>Guest names.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts paid.<\/p>\n<p>Cleaning charges.<\/p>\n<p>Deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Every rental had been recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Claire turned pages slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred twenty-five dollars per night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek stepped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the binder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She moved behind me.<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCleaning fee. One hundred eighty-five dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity deposits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hands began trembling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much money did you make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t that much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout fourteen thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the binder.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen thousand dollars had been enough to expose what all of us had been pretending not to see.<\/p>\n<p>Derek wanted a lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Claire had wanted to believe him when he promised one.<\/p>\n<p>And my generosity had become the resource they assumed would make it possible.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire turned one final page.<\/p>\n<p>Something slipped from the binder.<\/p>\n<p>A folded handwritten sheet landed on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Derek moved toward it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>I reached it first.<\/p>\n<p>His handwriting covered the page.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first line.<\/p>\n<p>Then the second.<\/p>\n<p>By the third, I understood why he had tried to grab it.<\/p>\n<p>This was not a rental calculation.<\/p>\n<p>It was a plan.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere in that plan, Derek had written about the day I would no longer stand between him and Cedar Lake.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9648\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Handwritten Plan Treated My Death Like a Business Milestone, and Claire Finally Saw What Her Husband Expected to Inherit<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Derek kept staring at the document.
