a story around me.<\/p>\n<p>A story in which Diane Mercer was slowly withdrawing.<\/p>\n<p>A story in which the cabin naturally passed toward Derek and Claire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he tell you that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda glanced at her son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom,\u201d Derek snapped, \u201cyou don\u2019t need to answer her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told us Diane eventually intended to transfer the property to you and the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou rented her home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she\u2019s my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek gave a bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019ll always come first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is about whether what you did was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed harder than anything I could have said.<\/p>\n<p>Marisol waited until the argument quieted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s another issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attempted to alter the administrator hierarchy on a property you don\u2019t own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard, Derek\u2019s father, finally stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad, stay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richard looked tired rather than angry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Diane authorized management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda touched her husband\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook her off gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m finished covering for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek\u2019s face reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re seriously doing this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou used Claire\u2019s mother\u2019s property to make money. You lied to us about permission. Now you\u2019re acting as if everyone else created the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>I thought that was the worst revelation we would have that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Then Claire walked inside.<\/p>\n<p>A moment later I heard her call Derek\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>Not loudly.<\/p>\n<p>That made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>She returned carrying a black binder.<\/p>\n<p>Derek went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>He said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Claire opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Spreadsheets filled the binder.<\/p>\n<p>Reservation dates.<\/p>\n<p>Guest names.<\/p>\n<p>Amounts collected.<\/p>\n<p>Cleaning fees.<\/p>\n<p>Security deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Notes.<\/p>\n<p>Derek had kept records.<\/p>\n<p>Claire turned pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred twenty-five dollars a night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA hundred eighty-five cleaning fee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive hundred security deposit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou charged security deposits on Mom\u2019s property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did you make?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t that much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He finally answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout fourteen thousand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number hung between us.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t apologize for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then something else came out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he wanted to make money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derek stepped toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know about all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew he had talked about renting the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it made her equally responsible.<\/p>\n<p>Because she had been close enough to the truth to ask me and had chosen not to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me you might sell eventually,\u201d she continued. \u201cHe said making some money from the property could help cover costs until you decided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have trusted me enough to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Derek, then at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t afford the things some of our friends can. Their vacations. Camps for the kids. Bigger houses.
