You simply became expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She fired.<\/p>\n<p>The shot struck the dock beside him.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel finally stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>Snipers held because neither target presented a clear safe shot and agents were moving closer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel lifted the recorder higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur confessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wendy froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot when he thinks his life depends on honesty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s voice drifted across the lake.<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t hear every word.<\/p>\n<p>Only fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Changed the tablets.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy insisted.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had to be stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Eleanor wasn&#39;t supposed to know.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy screamed and fired again.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel dropped.<\/p>\n<p>For one horrifying second I thought she had killed him.<\/p>\n<p>Then he rolled behind a dock post.<\/p>\n<p>Agents shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy turned toward the woods.<\/p>\n<p>She saw us.<\/p>\n<p>Saw me.<\/p>\n<p>Even from that distance, I knew the exact moment.<\/p>\n<p>Her body stopped.<\/p>\n<p>The gun lowered slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she began walking toward shore.<\/p>\n<p>Not running.<\/p>\n<p>Walking.<\/p>\n<p>Straight toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora!\u201d Noah shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Agents moved between us.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy ignored them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay back!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She kept coming.<\/p>\n<p>The gun remained at her side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrop the weapon!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou ruined everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accusation was so familiar I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac had said the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur had implied it.<\/p>\n<p>Bellweather had spent decades treating exposure as the crime rather than what exposure revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I called back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wendy raised the gun.<\/p>\n<p>Several shots sounded almost simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>She fell.<\/p>\n<p>The weapon slid across the wet boards.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds nobody moved except the agents rushing toward her.<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy was alive.<\/p>\n<p>Shot in the shoulder and thigh.<\/p>\n<p>Conscious.<\/p>\n<p>Furious.<\/p>\n<p>Handcuffs closed around her wrists.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had orchestrated my brother&#39;s abduction, helped kill my father and watched her son brutalize me screamed as agents carried her away.<\/p>\n<p>Noah put his arm around me.<\/p>\n<p>I let him.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Agents searched the dock.<\/p>\n<p>Blood marked the boards.<\/p>\n<p>The recorder lay near the edge.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was gone.<\/p>\n<p>A ladder descended from the far side into the lake.<\/p>\n<p>The drone scanned the water.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus shouted from the command vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMovement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A small motorboat had left the far side of the peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>One person aboard.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Heading south across Bellwater.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the sanctuary.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the dark shape moving across the lake.<\/p>\n<p>He had lost the reserve.<\/p>\n<p>Lost Wendy.<\/p>\n<p>Lost Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>Lost Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>Lost the secrecy that protected Bellweather.<\/p>\n<p>But he was still moving toward the place my father had chosen as the center of Blue Sparrow.<\/p>\n<p>And I knew Samuel Mercer well enough now to understand that desperate men did not always run toward safety.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they ran toward the last thing they could still destroy.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9579\">Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Samuel Reached Bellwater Before Us and Tried to Destroy My Father\u2019s Last Archive, Until Isaac Revealed What He Had Hidden for Years<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The road to Bellwater looked smaller than I remembered.
