She withdrew into herself afterward, selling much of the family business and encouraging us to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Mom have to do with this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan answered before Thomas could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than you&#39;ve been told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah shoved him against the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan smiled despite the pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think your mother was an innocent widow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you implying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not implying anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>His silence was becoming an answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora, tonight isn&#39;t the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight is exactly the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Police sirens sounded faintly in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently one of Noah&#39;s redundant emergency signals had worked after all.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked around at my brothers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother&#39;s name sounded strange in his mouth after so many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPromised her what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I would protect you from what Richard discovered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Evan did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah struck the wall beside his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother word and\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My brother stopped.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer to Evan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved over my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father discovered the theft because someone inside the Sterling family was helping move the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas moved toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s not that simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it&#39;s true?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was coerced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evan snorted.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor signed documents she didn&#39;t understand at first.
