Your assets could have stabilized everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you thought that made them yours?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou prepared transfer documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted my injured wrists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was your explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face crumpled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came easily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were very much in control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I understood the truth while saying it.<\/p>\n<p>The affair had humiliated me.<\/p>\n<p>The party had isolated me.<\/p>\n<p>The violence had frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>The papers would have completed the process.<\/p>\n<p>Each piece served the next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou wanted me desperate enough to sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t deny it.<\/p>\n<p>Clover stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the divorce was already decided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Flora wouldn&#39;t fight anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClover, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she&#39;d sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>She realized what she had revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clover shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink carefully.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw contracts at his apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac snapped, \u201cThey&#39;re none of your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey became everyone&#39;s business when you brought me here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Clover sounded angry rather than frightened.<\/p>\n<p>I watched the alliance between them collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that was the natural end of relationships built on another person&#39;s destruction.<\/p>\n<p>Julian approached me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police are outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac&#39;s head lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur moved toward the windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called the police?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;ve been waiting for confirmation that the evidence inside this briefcase matched records already under investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur backed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have jurisdiction over anything here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m not arresting you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators entered first.<\/p>\n<p>Uniformed officers followed.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s confidence disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>An officer approached him and began reading charges.<\/p>\n<p>Fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Embezzlement.<\/p>\n<p>Money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>Conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Witness intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>Then my father&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Sterling.<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the table.<\/p>\n<p>For fifteen years his death had been described as unfortunate.<\/p>\n<p>Now someone was finally calling it a crime.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur was handcuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Wendy screamed at the officers, insisting there had been some mistake.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stood motionless.<\/p>\n<p>Before Arthur was taken away, he looked at his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you&#39;re safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac&#39;s face whitened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t kill anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you concealed evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had heard my name from him thousands of times.<\/p>\n<p>Never like that.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded as though I still possessed some obligation to save him.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Two officers approached.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac offered no resistance when they cuffed him.<\/p>\n<p>Clover suddenly hurried toward the exit.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>She stopped anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know about the murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face loosened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you knew about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew he was married. You came to my birthday. You watched what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears ran down her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She reached into her purse.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus tensed.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a weapon, she produced a small USB drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsaac sent me files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMessages. Contracts. Financial records. I kept copies because\u2026\u201d She looked toward the doors through which Isaac had disappeared. \u201cBecause eventually I stopped trusting him too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus took the drive.<\/p>\n<p>Clover looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose you hate me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She seemed surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have enough room left in my life for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she walked out.<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom emptied over the next hour.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses gave names and numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs were taken.<\/p>\n<p>My wrists were treated by paramedics while Noah argued that I should go to a hospital immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually only my family remained.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the cake.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-four candles had burned down into small pools of wax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was supposed to be my birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorst party you&#39;ve ever had?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite everything, I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>It hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Noah put his jacket around my shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know where that is anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The simplicity of the answer nearly undid me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marcus spoke from across the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was holding my father&#39;s black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Something in his voice made everyone turn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis wasn&#39;t only about Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My uncle closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus opened the notebook on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Page after page contained names, companies, dates, transfers and handwritten calculations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many people?\u201d Julian asked.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus continued turning pages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral families.
