He had always been the calmest of us, which made people misunderstand him.<\/p>\n<p>Leo emerged behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Julian.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>Caleb.<\/p>\n<p>All five.<\/p>\n<p>For years Isaac had spoken about my brothers with contempt. He called them secretive, self-important, dangerous men who enjoyed making others uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>He never understood why they disliked him.<\/p>\n<p>He assumed it was jealousy.<\/p>\n<p>The truth was simpler.<\/p>\n<p>They had seen him clearly before I did.<\/p>\n<p>The ballroom doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Noah entered first.<\/p>\n<p>His gaze moved over the guests, the overturned chair, broken glass, abandoned champagne and finally the rope running from the beam to my wrists.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hearing my name in his voice almost broke the composure I had fought to keep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Noah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came directly to me.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stepped into his path. \u201cYou don&#39;t walk into my house without permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah didn&#39;t even look at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in that single word made Isaac obey before pride reminded him not to.<\/p>\n<p>Noah reached me and examined my wrists.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers were gentle.<\/p>\n<p>His face wasn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>Noah followed my gaze.<\/p>\n<p>Julian was already taking photographs of the room. Marcus spoke quietly to Caleb. Leo walked toward the security guard and asked who had tied the rope.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac laughed uneasily. \u201cThis is between husband and wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. What happened here belongs to every witness in this room now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clover backed toward the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Leo noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo that&#39;s Clover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac moved protectively in front of her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave her alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus removed a tablet from his case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may be difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clover stared at him. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we&#39;ve spent several hours learning quite a lot about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac&#39;s face hardened. \u201cYou&#39;ve been spying on us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus tapped the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHotel bookings. Private dinners. Purchases. Messages. Photographs. Eight months is a surprisingly long trail for two people who believed they were discreet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clover looked at Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said everything was private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur approached Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no right to possess that information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian glanced at him. \u201cArthur Vance. Attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcellent. Then I don&#39;t need to explain why what your son did tonight creates considerable exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac pointed toward me. \u201cShe provoked me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah looked at my back.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe very careful about what you say next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wendy hurried forward. \u201cDon&#39;t threaten my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah turned his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t threatened anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The restraint in his voice frightened her more effectively than shouting could have.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus changed the display on his tablet.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur saw it.<\/p>\n<p>And froze.<\/p>\n<p>That was the first moment I understood my brothers had come for something larger than rescuing me.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur whispered, \u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecognize it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus enlarged the document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransfers routed through three shell corporations and seven undeclared accounts. The movement totals several million dollars over four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you&#39;re reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hoping you&#39;d say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus opened another file.<\/p>\n<p>Julian removed a folder from his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at both of them.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since I had joined the Vance family, I saw him afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Clover seized Isaac&#39;s arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop panicking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac did.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever he saw unsettled him.<\/p>\n<p>Noah turned toward the guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who witnessed what happened to my sister tonight may leave. No one is being detained. But our attorneys will contact you, and I hope when they do, you&#39;ll decide whether protecting the Vances is worth lying about what you saw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Margaret stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll cooperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wendy stared at her oldest friend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMargaret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw him tie Flora up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another guest rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw it too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A man near the fireplace cleared his throat. \u201cI saw Isaac strike her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then another voice.<\/p>\n<p>And another.<\/p>\n<p>The room that had watched silently began speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Clover started crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said no one would care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac spun toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She realized too late what she had admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me everyone here would support you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Flora had nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac&#39;s face twisted. \u201cI said shut up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noah stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t help us more than you already have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isaac looked around the ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>His guests had become witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>His mistress had become evidence.<\/p>\n<p>His father&#39;s financial secrets were sitting on Marcus&#39;s tablet.<\/p>\n<p>And his wife\u2014the woman he had tied beneath a ceiling beam\u2014was no longer asking permission to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Leo cut the rope.<\/p>\n<p>My arms dropped painfully.<\/p>\n<p>Noah caught me before my knees gave way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlora.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He knew that tone.<\/p>\n<p>He had heard it when we were children and I refused to leave our father&#39;s office until I understood why everyone was arguing.<\/p>\n<p>Noah sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou found something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation frightened me more than the financial records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Noah.<\/p>\n<p>Noah nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus opened another document.<\/p>\n<p>My full legal name appeared at the top.<\/p>\n<p>Flora Sterling Vance.<\/p>\n<p>Below it was an asset-transfer agreement.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first paragraph twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Isaac shouted, \u201cClose that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every head turned.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian answered because Isaac wouldn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe agreement was drafted six months ago.
