to a church thrift program after Rebecca left for college.

The church had closed.

Its remaining textiles went to a historical quilting society because local women had contributed handmade pieces.

It sounded ridiculous.

So had the recipe book.

So had the library book.

Rebecca no longer dismissed ridiculous possibilities.

The quilting society kept an archive.

A volunteer recognized Eleanor’s name.

Several donated garments had been incorporated into memory quilts.

One quilt contained yellow fabric with tiny white flowers.

Rebecca stared at the photograph.

“Wrong pockets,” Sophie said.

The dress had pockets.

If Eleanor hid something inside one before donating it, the fabric might have been stitched into the quilt without anyone noticing.

The society allowed investigators to examine it.

One yellow panel felt thicker than the others.

The stitches were carefully removed.

Inside was a waterproof packet no larger than a playing card.

Microfilm.

Eleanor’s chronology.

Specialists digitized it.

The document contained twenty-three years of observations.

Names.

Dates.

License plates.

Calls.

Threats.

Payments she discovered.

Vance sightings.

Judith visits.

Mercer contacts.

Daniel’s movements.

And one final section labeled FOR REBECCA.

Rebecca read it alone first.

Then she invited Sophie.

Eleanor wrote that she had failed to tell the truth when Rebecca was young.

She could not undo that.

But she refused to let the people threatening them control what survived.

If Rebecca ever found the chronology, Eleanor wanted her to decide what to do with it.

Not David.

Not Thomas.

Not a lawyer.

Rebecca.

Her choice.

Rebecca cried harder at those two words than at anything else.

Her choice.

Eleanor had finally understood.

The chronology also solved the anonymous-source mystery.

Grace Nolan had given a copy to her son Michael years earlier, but encrypted portions were inaccessible until Michael found a key among his mother’s files.

One instruction from Eleanor told him to release specific information if Mercer’s network ever targeted Rebecca again.

Michael had followed it.

But he had not sent every anonymous message.

Some came from another source.

Digital
