Daniel did not react immediately.<\/p>\n
He stood beside the hospital window with Samuel on one side of the room and Robert on the other.<\/p>\n

"How?"<\/p>\n
"Because Thomas, Luis and I were with you."<\/p>\n
Robert stopped.<\/p>\n
Samuel looked toward Daniel.<\/p>\n
"There was a property conference in Denver."<\/p>\n
Robert's face changed.<\/p>\n
Mara saw memory arrive.<\/p>\n
"Four days."<\/p>\n
"Five."<\/p>\n
Robert whispered, "Evelyn told me the doctor said dates could vary."<\/p>\n
Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n
"She needed you to believe that."<\/p>\n

Robert closed his eyes.<\/p>\n
Daniel laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n
"So you're probably my father."<\/p>\n
"Probably isn't proof."<\/p>\n
"No. Apparently proof is the only thing anyone in this family didn't bother collecting."<\/p>\n
Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n
"I'll test."<\/p>\n
Daniel looked at him.<\/p>\n
"Now?"<\/p>\n
"Whenever you want."<\/p>\n
"No conditions?"<\/p>\n
"None."<\/p>\n
Daniel studied him.<\/p>\n
"Why refuse Thomas?"<\/p>\n
"Because Thomas wanted the answer for himself."<\/p>\n
"And now?"<\/p>\n
Samuel looked toward the bassinet.<\/p>\n
"Now you want it for yourself."<\/p>\n
Mara noticed Daniel's eyes follow his.<\/p>\n
He immediately stepped between Samuel and the baby.<\/p>\n
"Don't make this about my son."<\/p>\n
Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n
"I won't."<\/p>\n
Robert sat beside the wall.<\/p>\n
For the first time all night, he looked less frightened than lost.<\/p>\n
Daniel looked at him.<\/p>\n
Robert raised his eyes.<\/p>\n
"I'm still your father."<\/p>\n
Daniel's jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Mara felt some of the anger she had been holding finally change shape.<\/p>\n
"Good."<\/p>\n
