I knew Thomas would follow him. I knew Robert would try to involve himself. I wanted Elliot unable to leave."

Mara whispered, "She was trying to stop him."

Robert stared.

Patricia continued.

"I thought a leaking brake line would be discovered in the driveway. I made a shallow cut. I believed the fluid would leak quickly enough that the pedal would feel wrong before anyone drove more than a few feet."

Daniel's face tightened.

Rebecca covered her mouth.

"I was wrong."

The words hung in the room.

"I had watched Evelyn damage Robert's vehicles before. I knew where the line was because I had paid to repair it after Evelyn's first attempt. I didn't know Elliot would be angry enough to drive through the storm. I didn't know Rebecca was in the back seat."

Rebecca began sobbing.

Daniel wrapped one arm around her.

Mara watched from the hospital, unable to reach either of them.

"By the time I followed, it was too late."

Patricia's voice broke.

"I followed because I was afraid. Not for Elliot at first. For myself."

Robert lowered his head.

"I had cut the line. If anything happened, it would lead back to me."

Daniel whispered, "She knew."

Rebecca nodded.

Patricia continued.

"I saw Elliot stop safely on the shoulder. I nearly turned around."

Mara's pulse quickened.

"Then Thomas arrived."

The tape hissed.

"Then Robert."

"Then I watched three frightened men argue about evidence while none of them understood the car itself was the danger."

Robert sank into the chair.

"I should have gone to them. I should have told them."

Patricia's voice became quieter.

"But Evelyn was there too."

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

Patricia continued.

"She was parked farther back without lights."

Robert whispered, "I never saw her."

Mara held up one finger for silence.

"I saw Evelyn walk toward Thomas's truck while the men were arguing."

"What did she do?" Rebecca whispered.

The recording answered.

"I couldn't see."

Mara felt dread tighten inside her.

"When Elliot drove away, Evelyn followed first."

Rebecca stared at Daniel.

"Not Mom."

Patricia continued.

"I followed Evelyn. Robert followed after me, but he lost sight of us because I turned off my headlights."

Robert stood.

"That's why."

Mara looked at him.

"You thought you were behind Thomas."

Robert nodded slowly.

"In the rain, I saw taillights. I assumed…"

Patricia's voice continued.

"Evelyn drove close behind Elliot."

Rebecca went pale.

"The headlights."

Mara remembered her description.

The vehicle filling the mirror.

Elliot speeding despite failing brakes.

Patricia said, "I don't know whether Evelyn intended to force him off the road. I know only that she would not back away."

Rebecca sat on the floor of Thomas's living room.

Daniel remained beside her.

"When the car went through the guardrail, Evelyn stopped."

Patricia paused.

"I stopped behind her."

Mara's heartbeat seemed to synchronize with the tape's mechanical clicking.

"Evelyn told me to leave."

Robert whispered, "Why?"

"I refused."

Patricia continued.

"Then I heard Rebecca screaming."

Rebecca's eyes closed.

"I ran down the embankment. Evelyn followed."

Mara frowned.

Rebecca had remembered Patricia pulling her out.

But Evelyn had been there too.

"I found Rebecca first. Evelyn went to Elliot."

Daniel looked toward the phone.

That contradicted Rebecca's memory.

Patricia continued.

"I pulled Rebecca through the broken rear window. She was bleeding and confused. I told her to stay near the trees."

Rebecca whispered, "I followed Mom down."

"Then I went to Elliot."

Patricia's voice cracked.

"Evelyn was already beside him."

Mara felt the central misunderstanding beginning to reveal itself.

Rebecca had heard Elliot say, It was her.

Then the name Evelyn.

But perhaps he had not been identifying who cut the brakes.

Patricia continued.

"Elliot grabbed my wrist."

Rebecca stared at the cassette player.

"He said, 'It was her.'"

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Exactly what Rebecca remembered."

"Then I asked him who."

A pause.

"He looked past me."

Patricia began crying on the recording.

"At Evelyn."

Mara whispered, "The headlights."

Daniel looked toward the phone.

Patricia continued.

"He said, 'Evelyn. She wouldn't stop.'"

Rebecca covered her face.

Mara understood.

"Elliot wasn't saying Evelyn cut the brakes."

Robert whispered, "He was saying she chased him."

Patricia's recorded voice confirmed it.

"I spent years believing he somehow knew Evelyn had damaged Robert's cars before. Thomas believed the same thing when I finally told him. But that isn't what Elliot meant."

Daniel sat beside Rebecca.

"He meant the car behind them."

"Yes," Mara said.

The recording continued.

"Evelyn heard him."

Everyone became still.

"She knew Elliot had identified her."

Robert stared.

"What did she do?"

Patricia's voice became almost inaudible.

"She told me Rebecca would lose everything if I spoke."

Rebecca looked up.

"She knew I cut the brake line. She had seen me at Robert's car."

Robert covered his face.

"She told me police would call it murder. She told me Rebecca would grow up with a mother in prison and a father exposed as a fraud."

Mara felt sick.

"And I believed her."

Patricia paused.

"So I hid my daughter."

Rebecca began crying harder.

"I put her in my car. I drove her to my sister's house before police arrived. I told my sister Rebecca had fallen down the stairs and needed somewhere quiet."

Robert whispered, "You told me she was at a friend's."

The tape continued.

"I returned to the crash after Robert and Thomas were already there."

Mara understood how seventeen years of contradictory memories had formed.

Everyone had arrived and left at different moments.

Everyone had lied about where they had been.

"I let Robert believe Thomas reached Elliot before he did. I let Thomas believe Robert had hidden evidence. I let both men blame each other because their hatred protected me."

Daniel stared at the floor.

Patricia's voice softened.

"I am sorry."

Robert began crying.

"I am sorry to Elliot. I am sorry to Rebecca. I am sorry to Daniel, because the lie about that night became the lie about his entire life."

Daniel looked up.

Patricia continued.

"I agreed to raise Daniel because I loved Robert and because I hated Evelyn."

The admission was stark.

"I wish I could say it was entirely generosity."

Daniel's face tightened.

"It wasn't."

Mara felt pain for him.

"I wanted Evelyn to know that Robert had chosen his family. When she gave birth, I offered to raise Daniel. She agreed because she was grieving, frightened and dependent on Thomas."

Robert whispered, "We thought it was best."

Patricia's voice seemed to answer him from the past.

"We called it best because none of us wanted to call it what it was."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"We used a child to settle an adult war."

Mara looked down at her newborn son.

That sentence struck harder than anything else on the recording.

Patricia continued.

"Daniel deserved to know who his mother was. I loved him. That does not excuse denying him the truth."

Daniel wiped his eyes.

"And if Daniel ever has a child of his own, tell him this."

The room seemed to contract around Mara.

"Do not give that child a name because of us."

Daniel looked toward the phone.

Patricia's recorded voice became steadier.

"Do not make him carry Elliot. Do not make him carry Robert. Do not make him carry me, Evelyn, Thomas, or any debt created before he was born."

Mara felt tears reach her cheeks.

"Let him belong to himself."

The tape clicked.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then another voice appeared on the recording.

Thomas.

"This is Thomas Vale. Patricia made this statement voluntarily on March sixth."

Robert looked toward the phone.

Thomas continued.

"She asked me not to release it until after her death."

A pause.

"I agreed."

Another.

"That was a mistake."

Daniel frowned.

Thomas's voice continued.

"Because Patricia still omitted one fact."

Rebecca looked toward the cassette player.

Mara felt dread return.

"What fact?"

Thomas answered.

"She said Evelyn followed Elliot aggressively."

The tape hissed.

"But she did not say why."

Daniel stood.

Thomas continued.

"Three months before Patricia recorded this statement, I found Elliot's missing backpack."

Rebecca whispered, "The copies."

"Inside were duplicates of the insurance records."

Robert stared.

"But there was something else."

Mara leaned forward.

"A letter written by Evelyn."

Robert's face changed.

Thomas continued.

"It was addressed to Elliot."

Daniel whispered, "What did she write?"

The recording answered.

"In it, Evelyn admitted she had deliberately damaged Robert's vehicles."

Robert closed his eyes.

"She also admitted she intended to destroy Robert's marriage by making Patricia believe he was reckless, unstable and dangerous."

Mara stared.

"She wanted Patricia to leave him."

Thomas continued.

"Elliot took the letter because he intended to show Robert."

Daniel looked toward Rebecca.

"So Evelyn chased him for the letter."

"Yes," Mara whispered.

Thomas said, "Evelyn did not know Patricia had cut the second brake line."

Robert looked up.

"Then she didn't know the car was dangerous."

"No," Mara said.

"She believed she was chasing a functioning car."

Thomas's voice continued.

"I no longer believe Evelyn intended to kill Elliot."

Rebecca exhaled.

"But intent does not erase consequence."

Silence.

"She chased a frightened eighteen-year-old through a severe storm to recover evidence of her own wrongdoing. Patricia damaged the brakes to prevent him from leaving. Robert destroyed evidence after the crash. I committed fraud and threatened everyone around me."

Thomas paused.

"Four adults each contributed something to the road that killed Elliot."

Mara felt the truth settle with an ugliness more believable than a single villain.

No mastermind.

No perfect murder.

A chain of selfish decisions.

Thomas continued.

"If anyone turns this into a story about one guilty person, they will be lying again."

Daniel lowered his head.

Then Thomas said one final thing.

"There is one piece of evidence I did not keep in this house."

Daniel looked up.

"The original letter from Evelyn is in locker 317."

Mara immediately thought of the silver key.

Thomas continued.

"So is Elliot's backpack."

The tape clicked off.

Daniel and Rebecca sat in silence.

Then Mara heard movement somewhere beyond the living room.

Not from the recording.

Real movement.

Daniel turned.

"Who's there?"

Rebecca stood.

A floorboard creaked.

Then Evelyn stepped from the hallway.

Her face was wet with tears.

In one hand she held the key marked 317.

In the other, she held a hammer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Evelyn’s Attempt to Reach Locker 317 Forced Daniel to Choose Between Protecting His Birth Mother and Preserving the Evidence Elliot Died Carrying

Daniel did not enter the house immediately.
