Dark jacket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe broke the kitchen glass while we were talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you call police first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course she had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I could multitask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost cried.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I held her another second.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz came over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Mercer, nobody appears to be inside now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they take?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I entered with an officer.<\/p>\n<p>The kitchen was disturbed but not destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Drawers opened.<\/p>\n<p>Cabinet doors hanging wide.<\/p>\n<p>My blue financial binder lay on the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Pages scattered.<\/p>\n<p>They had searched it.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond&#39;s study was worse.<\/p>\n<p>Every drawer had been pulled out.<\/p>\n<p>Books thrown down.<\/p>\n<p>The desk moved.<\/p>\n<p>Closet opened.<\/p>\n<p>Papers covered the carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood in the doorway behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I needed quiet.<\/p>\n<p>I walked through the mess.<\/p>\n<p>The person hadn&#39;t been stealing valuables.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond&#39;s watch remained upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>My jewelry box had not been touched.<\/p>\n<p>The television was there.<\/p>\n<p>Silver serving pieces remained in the dining-room cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>They wanted documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything missing?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the empty space on Raymond&#39;s desk.<\/p>\n<p>His old desktop computer.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComputer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat computer worked?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond&#39;s files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad backed everything up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExternal drives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We searched.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>The intruder had known exactly where to look.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz asked whether Alicia knew about the computer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce might too.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who had seen the photograph of the study could know.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark noticed something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe printer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He crouched beside Raymond&#39;s old printer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe memory card is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t even know the printer had one.<\/p>\n<p>Mark explained Raymond used it to scan documents.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had removed the storage card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever came here understood his system,\u201d Samuel said.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz agreed.<\/p>\n<p>That narrowed nothing enough to comfort me.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone just broke into my house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSend Mark a photograph from your kitchen holding today&#39;s newspaper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia said, \u201cYou think I did this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think believing people without checking has become expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hung up.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty seconds later, Mark received a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia in her kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>She held her phone screen showing the current time.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#39;t prove where she&#39;d been twenty minutes earlier.<\/p>\n<p>But she had apparently been home when the picture was taken.<\/p>\n<p>Mark called her back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Bruce say when he came yesterday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted to know whether Dorothy found Raymond&#39;s files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich files?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did he know they existed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to scare him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying things like that as though they improve the next sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was on Raymond&#39;s computer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmails. Scans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would Bruce want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat ledger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond found payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know all the names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA county official.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only heard the last name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel knew the name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas Keating?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it too.<\/p>\n<p>County planning commission.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond had complained about him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe handled zoning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>If Keating had been feeding Bruce advance information about roads and zoning changes, Bruce could buy strategically before public announcements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Raymond&#39;s ledger physical?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComputer and paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We searched the study.<\/p>\n<p>No ledger.<\/p>\n<p>No obvious copy.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the blue binder.<\/p>\n<p>The intruder had searched it but left it.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps because the ledger wasn&#39;t there.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz asked Alicia to come to the station voluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia resisted.<\/p>\n<p>Mark said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she agreed.<\/p>\n<p>After the call, he sat on the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know who she is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat beside him.<\/p>\n<p>For a minute, we were simply mother and son.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI should&#39;ve protected you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should have respected me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protection was Raymond deciding what I could handle.<\/p>\n<p>Protection was Mark deciding I needed Silver Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>Respect would have been asking.<\/p>\n<p>Respect would have been telling the truth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel interrupted gently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He held something.<\/p>\n<p>A photograph recovered from beneath Raymond&#39;s overturned desk.<\/p>\n<p>It showed Raymond standing beside Father Brennan outside St. Matthew&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>On the back Raymond had written:<\/p>\n<p>Second copy with Patrick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPatrick who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather Brennan&#39;s first name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The priest had retired years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he alive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel knew.<\/p>\n<p>A retirement residence forty miles away.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz immediately called.<\/p>\n<p>Father Patrick Brennan was alive.<\/p>\n<p>And according to the administrator, very much capable of speaking for himself.<\/p>\n<p>We drove there that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>He was eighty-eight.<\/p>\n<p>Thin.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp-eyed.<\/p>\n<p>He recognized me before I recognized him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered how long Raymond&#39;s puzzles would take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He invited us into a small sitting room.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz identified herself.<\/p>\n<p>Father Brennan&#39;s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has become serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was serious when Raymond came to you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Brennan stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the church archives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were at St. Matthew&#39;s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot those archives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that when St. Matthew&#39;s closed, sacramental records and historical materials moved to the active parish downtown.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond had donated a locked archival box labeled MERCER FAMILY RECORDS.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody would open it because it was private material placed under agreement with the parish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have the release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course he did.<\/p>\n<p>Father Brennan went to his bedroom and returned with an envelope.<\/p>\n<p>He handed it to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently everybody promised my husband something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Father Brennan smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was persuasive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was a train.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The archival box arrived at the police station two hours later.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Ortiz opened it under camera.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were family photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Property deeds.<\/p>\n<p>Old tax records.<\/p>\n<p>And one thick black notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond&#39;s ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel turned pages.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Companies.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Keating.<\/p>\n<p>Others.<\/p>\n<p>Then one name made Mark stand.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Beside hers were payment dates and amounts.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Ten thousand.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty thousand.<\/p>\n<p>But Raymond had drawn a line beneath the later entries.<\/p>\n<p>After that line he wrote:<\/p>\n<p>Alicia no longer source. Now participant.<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction was brutal.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, Raymond believed she crossed from being manipulated into willingly helping.<\/p>\n<p>Then Samuel reached the final pages.<\/p>\n<p>There was a list of property owners.<\/p>\n<p>Older people.<\/p>\n<p>Widows.<\/p>\n<p>Retirees.<\/p>\n<p>Beside several names were notes.<\/p>\n<p>Capacity concern.<\/p>\n<p>Family intermediary.<\/p>\n<p>Quick sale.<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>I wasn&#39;t the first.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce&#39;s group had apparently used variations of the same pressure on other homeowners.<\/p>\n<p>Sell before maintenance becomes difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Let family help.<\/p>\n<p>Simplify.<\/p>\n<p>Downsize.<\/p>\n<p>One name was underlined.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>I knew her.<\/p>\n<p>She had sold her lake house two years earlier and moved into assisted living.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered hearing she&#39;d developed memory problems.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond&#39;s note said:<\/p>\n<p>Daughter says mother was fine before sale.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Detective Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis happened to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel turned another page.<\/p>\n<p>Three more names.<\/p>\n<p>Three more unusually cheap sales.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern was no longer about me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz&#39;s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned, her expression was different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers went to bring Bruce in for questioning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGone where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis office is empty. Home appears cleared out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark swore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeighbors saw him loading his vehicle early this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re issuing alerts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then her phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time she listened longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hung up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel Hayes&#39;s attorney just contacted us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Mr. Hayes is prepared to cooperate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Bruce called him this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBruce told him Dorothy Mercer would never sign anything once she knew what Raymond had recorded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin chilled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like surrender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz&#39;s voice hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Hayes, Bruce said there was still another way to get the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018If Dorothy won&#39;t sign, Mark eventually will.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t own anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel answered before I could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot while Dorothy is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Ortiz.<\/p>\n<p>The meaning arrived slowly and horribly.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce was no longer merely trying to persuade me.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9281\">Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Daniel Hayes Agreed to Talk, but His Explanation of Bruce\u2019s Final Plan Made My Son Ask Me to Leave Home Immediately<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We reached my street behind two police vehicles.
