Neither got out immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re talking,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel stood far enough from the window not to be seen. \u201cLet them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the street, Eleanor had abandoned the ridiculous watering can and was now pretending to sweep a porch already clean enough to eat from. Her phone rested in her other hand.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia finally stepped out. She wore a cream-colored coat and carried the folder against her chest. Mark followed more slowly. He looked at the house before he looked at the front door.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt.<\/p>\n<p>A child can grow old and still have a face his mother knows. Mark was fifty, with gray beginning at his temples, but I recognized guilt in the angle of his shoulders before he reached the porch.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door before they rang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMorning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia smiled brightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother D.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had called me that for years. Usually I liked it. That morning the nickname sounded rehearsed.<\/p>\n<p>Mark kissed my cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His lips barely touched my skin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia lifted the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought we&#39;d have plenty of time to go through everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust some practical things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They followed me into the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stopped when she saw Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>Her reaction lasted perhaps half a second, but it was enough. Her fingers tightened around the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel,\u201d I said, \u201cyou remember Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark shook his hand.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia remained standing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Alicia,\u201d I added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;ve met,\u201d Samuel said.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia recovered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat brings you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pulled out my chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI invited him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought if we&#39;re discussing my future, I should have somebody here who understands legal documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave a little laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat really isn&#39;t necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel pulled out the chair beside mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sat anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, what&#39;s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven minutes.<\/p>\n<p>That was how long his Sunday calls usually lasted now.<\/p>\n<p>He used to call at five every Sunday. When Raymond was alive, those calls could stretch past dinner. After the funeral, they shortened. Thirty minutes became twenty. Twenty became eleven. Sometimes I could hear Alicia asking him questions in the background, or one of the children needing something, and I always told him to go.<\/p>\n<p>I wondered how much of our relationship I had surrendered simply because I wanted to be easy to love.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought,\u201d I said, \u201cwe could stop pretending today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia immediately leaned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretending?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She set the folder beside the butter dish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMother D, you&#39;re making me nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked up.<\/p>\n<p>I had surprised myself too.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia reached across the table and placed her hand over mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re only trying to make things easier for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her manicured fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia&#39;s hand stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe telephone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou answered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn&#39;t say anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia withdrew her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached beneath the table and brought out my grocery notepad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNineteen minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face lost its color.<\/p>\n<p>I opened to the first page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote things down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark lowered himself into a chair.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia remained standing.<\/p>\n<p>I read the first time aloud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven nineteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the folder.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said I&#39;d sign whatever you put in front of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t exactly\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said if I tried to read the papers, Mark could take my glasses and clean them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was joking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Silver Meadows a joke?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas Bruce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou talked to Bruce?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia&#39;s eyes flashed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually,\u201d I said, \u201cnow seems perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel opened his case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke to Mr. Carter at eight oh-three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Dorothy asked me to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked from Samuel to his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Bruce say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believes this property may be listed within thirty days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She put both hands on the back of a chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked generally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you hadn&#39;t called him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t mean you didn&#39;t talk to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She glared at Mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose side are you on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question seemed to embarrass him.<\/p>\n<p>I almost intervened. That was my instinct. Protect Mark from discomfort. Smooth the moment. Make everyone a sandwich and give them time to calm down.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the notepad.<\/p>\n<p>I remained seated.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia exhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine. I spoke to Bruce because somebody had to think ahead. This house is too much for one person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne person who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when did you decide that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy, look around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gestured toward the kitchen as if the room itself proved her case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s a huge property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It&#39;s a normal house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked down at his papers.<\/p>\n<p>Mark rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia tried again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe worry about you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou discussed selling my home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor your care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou discussed using the proceeds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat expenses?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the notepad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVacation. Boat. Debt. Lake trip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, don&#39;t start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said we were joking about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid it sound funny to you this morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark could not meet my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I placed a small envelope on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside was the record of the forty-thousand-dollar transfer Raymond and I had made four years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Mark studied it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou kept this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo during the call, you said you and Mark had been paying toward this house for four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI meant we&#39;ve had expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour expenses aren&#39;t payments on my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Mark?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Alicia.<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to my son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark, what did you think those monthly payments were for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His forehead creased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat monthly payments?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was so genuine that my anger briefly disappeared beneath something worse.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed several bank statements toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the figures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour thousand five hundred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were sending us this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sending money to the account Alicia gave me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver approximately four years, Dorothy transferred slightly more than two hundred thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s mouth opened.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing came out.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him read the statements again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sat down at last.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;s complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is two hundred thousand dollars complicated?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew your mother helped us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence landed hard.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>And I saw shame arrive.<\/p>\n<p>He had not known everything.<\/p>\n<p>But he had known enough to ask.<\/p>\n<p>He simply hadn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel slid another document across the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor clarity, Dorothy&#39;s home has had no mortgage since 1998.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She cut him off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said she had a mortgage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I said we had housing expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me Mom&#39;s money was offsetting costs connected to her property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia&#39;s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause eventually we were going to have to deal with it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not concern.<\/p>\n<p>Ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet legal ownership, perhaps, but ownership in her mind.<\/p>\n<p>Something she expected to inherit, manage, liquidate, and spend.<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeal with what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy death?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I want to hear her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia&#39;s face reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody said anything about you dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why does my house already belong in your budget?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel opened the folder containing the paperwork we had prepared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning Dorothy updated several legal protections.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked at him sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat protections?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy protections,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained the revised power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Then the trust.<\/p>\n<p>Then my estate plan.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked stricken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou changed your will?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of what I learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia sat straighter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cWhat&#39;s unbelievable is that you arrived with papers you expected me to sign without reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pushed her folder away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you won&#39;t object to my reviewing the documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand came down over the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI absolutely object.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they&#39;re private family documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey concern Dorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey concern all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Dorothy should read them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia pulled the folder closer.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly is in there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what&#39;s in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what you told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words came quietly.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened Alicia more than shouting would have.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, I knew about Silver Meadows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Alicia wanted to talk about selling the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know about all the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I believed him.<\/p>\n<p>That did not absolve him.<\/p>\n<p>He had sat in the car.<\/p>\n<p>He had agreed to distract me.<\/p>\n<p>He had listened while his wife planned how I should be handled.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the notepad toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you&#39;d look sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you&#39;d help keep me from reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t mean\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had nothing.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the man my son had become and, for one painful moment, remembered every version that came before him.<\/p>\n<p>The newborn Raymond held so awkwardly.<\/p>\n<p>The boy who left muddy shoes beside the back door.<\/p>\n<p>The teenager who drove my station wagon into a mailbox and confessed before I noticed the dent.<\/p>\n<p>The young man who cried at his father&#39;s funeral with his face pressed into my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>He was all of those people.<\/p>\n<p>And he was also the man who had sat beside Alicia that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Both things could be true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut love does not require me to pretend this didn&#39;t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia suddenly stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has become completely irrational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel closed his folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It has become documented.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the front door.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Across the street, Eleanor was still there.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia noticed her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is Eleanor watching us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I answered before Samuel could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I asked her to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re treating us like criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the folder beneath her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know what I&#39;m treating you like yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then the doorbell rang.<\/p>\n<p>Through the glass, I saw Eleanor standing on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer was beside her.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia went completely
