Until then, everything had been built from documents and recollections. Now they had Raymond's voice describing the plan while it was still unfolding.

Most importantly, they had Leonard threatening him.

Samuel arrived at six.

The investigator was already waiting outside.

Mark came shortly afterward.

Alicia arrived last.

Dorothy opened the door.

“You shouldn't come.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because I know where Charles kept his old files.”

Dorothy stared at her.

“Where?”

Alicia hesitated.

“An office he rented before he opened his current practice.”

Samuel looked at her.

“Does he still have access?”

“I don't know.”

“Why are you telling us?”

Alicia looked at Dorothy.

“Because I lied for too long.”

They left for the county archive.

The building was nearly empty.

A clerk met them at the entrance.

Samuel presented the authorization.

“We're looking for archived property filings and development records connected to the Hale property.”

The clerk disappeared into the records room.

Dorothy waited.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

Finally, the clerk returned carrying three boxes.

“Some of these records were never digitized.”

Samuel thanked him.

They began searching.

The first box contained ordinary property documents.

The second contained development proposals.

The third contained old correspondence.

Dorothy found Raymond's name.

Then Leonard's.

Then Daniel's.

A letter dated fifteen years earlier caught her attention.

Raymond had written to the county board.

He warned them about a proposed development scheme involving the lake corridor.

At the bottom was a note from a county official.

“File transferred to special review.”

Dorothy frowned.

“Where is the special review file?”

The clerk checked the reference number.

He looked uncomfortable.

“It says restricted.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Samuel asked to speak with the records supervisor.

While they waited, Dorothy opened another folder.

Inside was a photocopy of a contract.

The original signatures were visible.

One belonged to Leonard.

Another belonged to a company Dorothy didn't recognize.

The third belonged to someone named Arthur Cross.

Dorothy looked at Alicia.

“Do you know this name?”

Alicia shook her head.

Samuel did.

“Arthur Cross was a former investor.”

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared from the business records.”

“Meaning?”

“His company dissolved.”

Dorothy stared at the contract.

Then she noticed a handwritten notation.

“Paid in full.”

The date was the day before Raymond and Daniel dissolved their company.

Dorothy suddenly understood.

Raymond had not left the business because it failed.

He had left because he had discovered where the money was going.

The supervisor arrived.

“What are you looking for?”

Samuel explained.

The supervisor looked at the file numbers.

Then he said quietly, “Some of these documents were removed years ago.”

“By whom?”

“County order.”

“Who requested the removal?”

The supervisor hesitated.

“Charles Benton.”

Dorothy felt her stomach tighten.

“He had authority?”

“Not officially.”

“Then why?”

The supervisor lowered his voice.

“He knew someone on the board.”

Samuel looked at Dorothy.

Another piece.

Another connection.

They requested copies of everything remaining.

Then Mark found a map.

It showed the lake corridor.

Seventeen properties.

The exact properties Leonard had been targeting.

Dorothy studied the map.

There was one property marked differently.

Her own.

A red line surrounded it.

“What does this mean?”

The clerk looked at it.

“I don't know.”

Samuel took a photograph.

“It means your property was the gateway.”

Dorothy nodded.

Then Alicia pointed to a handwritten note at the bottom.

“What's that?”

Samuel read it.

“Transfer priority.”

The property had been designated first.

Dorothy felt a chill.

They had not started with her because she was vulnerable.

They had started with her because she was strategically necessary.

Suddenly, the archive door opened.

Leonard Vale walked in.

Dorothy turned.

He looked directly at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Leonard smiled.

“You've been busy.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“I have every right to access public records.”

“Not these.”

Leonard glanced at the boxes.

“I see you've found some old history.”

Dorothy looked at him.

“History you tried to erase.”

His smile faded.

“You don't understand what you're dealing with.”

“I understand enough.”

“You think this is about money.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“You wanted control.”

Leonard's eyes hardened.

“And Raymond wouldn't give it to you.”

“He wouldn't give it to me?”

“You heard the recording.”

Dorothy stepped closer.

“You threatened him.”

Leonard said nothing.

“Did you hurt him?”

“No.”

“Did you arrange for someone else to?”

“No.”

Dorothy studied him.

His answer came too quickly.

“You knew he would be attacked.”

Leonard's face changed.

“I knew nothing about an attack.”

“Then why did you tell Charles we needed to move after the recording was found?”

Leonard stared at her.

“You've been listening.”

Dorothy nodded.

“You made the mistake of assuming everyone around you was loyal.”

Leonard looked toward Alicia.

“You betrayed us.”

Alicia's face went pale.

“No.”

“You think these people will protect you?”

Dorothy stepped between them.

“Don't threaten her.”

Leonard laughed.

“You still think you can control this.”

“No.”

Dorothy held up the recorder.

“You can no longer control what you've already said.”

The investigator approached.

“Mr. Vale, we'd like you to come with us.”

Leonard looked at him.

“Am I being arrested?”

“Not at this moment.”

Leonard smiled.

“Then I'll leave.”

The investigator did not stop him.

But as Leonard passed Dorothy, he whispered something.

“You still haven't found what Raymond hid.”

Dorothy turned.

“What?”

He kept walking.

Samuel watched him leave.

“He knows about another piece.”

Dorothy looked at the boxes.

They searched for hours.

Near the bottom of the third box, Mark found a small envelope.

No name.

Only three words.

FOR DOROTHY — LAST.

Inside was a key.

And a note.

“The truth is not in the house. It is where the house began.”

Dorothy stared at the key.

Samuel recognized it.

“The old company office.”

Daniel's office.

The place where the story had started.

The place Raymond and Daniel had once worked.

Dorothy closed her hand around the key.

“Then that's where we go.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The Office Where It Started

Dorothy woke before dawn.
