meeting him.<\/p>\n<p>Because she remembered hearing Raymond say it once.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Late at night.<\/p>\n<p>She had been walking past his office when she heard Raymond on the phone.<\/p>\n<p>She had stopped only long enough to hear him say, \u201cDaniel, you promised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, she had assumed it was a business matter.<\/p>\n<p>Now she wondered what promise had been made.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel returned after speaking with the investigators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeonard admitted meeting Raymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked chill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you find this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel studied the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s a location written here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the corner.<\/p>\n<p>A street name.<\/p>\n<p>An address.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy recognized it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe old marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They drove there before sunset.<\/p>\n<p>The marina was nearly empty.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the boats had been removed for winter.<\/p>\n<p>An old office building stood near the docks.<\/p>\n<p>The sign was faded.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel checked the address.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The door was locked.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked through the window.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were shelves, old files, and a desk.<\/p>\n<p>A handwritten sign said the office was closed.<\/p>\n<p>Mark looked at Dorothy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we&#39;re too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A light was on in the back.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel knocked.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment, the door opened.<\/p>\n<p>An older man stood there.<\/p>\n<p>Gray hair.<\/p>\n<p>Thin face.<\/p>\n<p>Tired eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy knew immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>Then his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She felt her throat tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew I did you wait?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stepped aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The office smelled of dust and old paper.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wondered how long it would take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor them to come after the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew they would eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Samuel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour lawyer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He walked to a filing cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond and I built something together a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe discovered that some of our investors weren&#39;t interested in building anything legally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wanted control of the land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy listened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of them was connected to Leonard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeonard was younger then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Raymond do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he discovered money moving through shell companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy felt her stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same companies?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel removed a file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond kept copies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve already found one hiding place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Names repeated.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard.<\/p>\n<p>Charles.<\/p>\n<p>And another name.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy stared.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>But the date was impossible.<\/p>\n<p>It was fifteen years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlicia wasn&#39;t involved then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is her name here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#39;t her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy stared at the name.<\/p>\n<p>The surname was different.<\/p>\n<p>The initials were the same.<\/p>\n<p>She exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, she had forgotten that people could share names.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve been living under suspicion for too long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Raymond trust you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t he tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he believed the less you knew, the safer you were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy&#39;s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat didn&#39;t keep me safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt only kept you uninformed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The honesty of the answer hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel asked, \u201cWhat happened to the original investors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome disappeared from the business world. Others changed names.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Leonard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Leonard always believed patience was more powerful than money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Dorothy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe waited years for the right property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy glanced at the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy mine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of the lake corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe access route.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pointed to a survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis corridor connects the entire western section of the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they control it\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey control development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Raymond knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he prepared for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know he would die?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel added, \u201cBut he knew someone might try to make his death useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he reached beneath the desk and removed another envelope.<\/p>\n<p>It was sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Her name was written on it.<\/p>\n<p>In Raymond&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy&#39;s hands trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you give me this before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Raymond told me not to unless you came here yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was one page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dear Dorothy,<\/p>\n<p>If you are reading this, then the house is no longer simply a house.
