A thin layer of frost covered the grass beside the lake, and the bare branches along the eastern boundary clicked softly in the wind. Dorothy stood at the kitchen window with a mug of coffee in her hands and watched the water beyond the trees. For months, that view had represented everything she was fighting to keep. Now it represented something else.<\/p>\n<p>Proof.<\/p>\n<p>On the dining-room table lay the leather notebook Raymond had left behind, the original lake-access agreement, copies of the forged document, bank records, printed emails, and the recording from Charles Benton&#39;s office. Samuel had arranged everything in chronological order. Nothing was there by accident. Every page had been copied, authenticated, and secured.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy touched the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday,\u201d she whispered, \u201cthey finally tell us why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel arrived shortly after eight. He carried two briefcases and wore the expression Dorothy had learned to recognize over the past several weeks. He was calm when things were going according to plan. When he was worried, he became quieter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is ready,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;ll be nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot visible?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can still cancel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to prove anything by putting yourself through this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked toward the lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent too many years believing that keeping the peace was the same thing as doing the right thing. I&#39;m not making that mistake again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At ten, Mark arrived alone.<\/p>\n<p>He parked near the house and walked toward the porch with his hands in his coat pockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sure about this?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark gave a nervous laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least you&#39;re honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped smiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen when they come, you say exactly what you know. Nothing more. Nothing less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Alicia asks you to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy studied her son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, a vehicle appeared at the end of the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Carter.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him came another vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy watched them park.<\/p>\n<p>A few minutes later, Charles Benton arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia was the last.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped out of her car slowly.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, she simply stood beside it.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy saw the conflict on her face.<\/p>\n<p>Then Alicia walked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really invited everyone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I wanted the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked at the lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t think you&#39;re going to like everything you hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy&#39;s voice was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t liked much of what I&#39;ve heard lately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They walked down toward the water.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting place was a small wooden platform Raymond had built years earlier. It stood near the old access corridor and overlooked the narrow stretch of shoreline that had become the center of the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond liked unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard glanced toward Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Charles remained expressionless.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy noticed the glance.<\/p>\n<p>It confirmed something.<\/p>\n<p>They had expected this meeting to be controlled.<\/p>\n<p>They had expected her to be intimidated.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, she was standing on the one piece of ground they could not discuss without revealing what they wanted.<\/p>\n<p>She placed a folder on the wooden table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet&#39;s begin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy, this isn&#39;t necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve already received our position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked directly at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve received your story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re not here to argue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen tell me why you&#39;re here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Leonard.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo finalize an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat agreement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard&#39;s patience began to disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you standing beside the lake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>The wind moved across the water.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel watched silently from several yards away.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy opened the first folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the original lake-access agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles&#39;s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard stared at the document.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond entered this agreement years ago. It prevents commercial use of the eastern corridor without specific consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard recovered quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat agreement is obsolete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you spend months trying to acquire the property before December fifteenth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy opened another folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a county inquiry submitted by your development company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard looked at Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Charles said, \u201cThat doesn&#39;t establish anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy placed another paper on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the payment record.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-five thousand dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce&#39;s name.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard&#39;s company.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce shifted uncomfortably.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me the offer was based on market conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did Leonard pay you separately?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce looked toward Leonard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was compensated for consulting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsulting about my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy opened another document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout my capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alicia looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Mark&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Charles finally spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDorothy, you&#39;re misunderstanding the purpose of that discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were preparing to declare me incapable of managing my own affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was a protective measure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>It was not a happy sound.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis conversation is becoming emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Dorothy said. \u201cIt is becoming accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took out the recorder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recorded our meeting at your office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles&#39;s face went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pressed play.<\/p>\n<p>His own voice came from the device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would ensure the property is protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Dorothy&#39;s recorded voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Charles&#39;s answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom people who may try to exploit you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>Then came his statement that accepting the sale would simplify matters.<\/p>\n<p>Silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce looked at the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Leonard remained still.<\/p>\n<p>But his eyes had changed.<\/p>\n<p>He was no longer confident.<\/p>\n<p>He was calculating.<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy noticed.<\/p>\n<p>She knew then that Raymond had been right.<\/p>\n<p>The liar was most dangerous when cornered.<\/p>\n<p>She opened the leather notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this in Raymond&#39;s storage unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard&#39;s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s nothing in there that concerns you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you won&#39;t mind hearing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She read Raymond&#39;s notes aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern was unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>When she reached the line about December fifteenth, Charles interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dorothy closed the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at all of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what happens today might.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=9228\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Deadline They Couldn&#8217;t Explain<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The morning of December fifteenth arrived beneath a pale winter sky.
