I only know the property is worth more than anyone is going to admit.”

A pause.

Then Raymond named Bruce Carter.

He named Leonard Vale.

He named Charles Benton.

And then he said something that made Dorothy open her eyes.

“Mark is not the architect.”

Alicia began crying.

Raymond continued.

“He may be frightened. They will call her confused. They will call her stubborn. They will say she's being manipulated. The person who controls the narrative will control the court.”

Dorothy felt a chill.

The guardianship petition was not a separate threat.

It was the foundation of the entire scheme.

If they could convince a court Dorothy was incapable of making decisions, her signature would no longer matter.

The house could be transferred through legal channels.

The forged document would become merely another piece of evidence supporting their story.

Dorothy suddenly understood why the pressure had begun so early.

They needed to isolate her before they moved.

The next recording was shorter.

Raymond mentioned someone named Leonard.

Then another name.

“Charles knows about the old agreement.”

Samuel paused the recording.

“What old agreement?”

Dorothy shook her head.

“I don't know.”

They searched Raymond's files.

Nothing.

Then Alicia remembered something.

“There was a storage unit.”

Dorothy looked at her.

“What storage unit?”

“Raymond had one.”

“I thought he closed it.”

“He told me he did.”

Samuel stood.

“Where?”

Alicia gave him the address.

The storage facility was twenty minutes away.

They went that afternoon.

The manager produced an old access record.

Raymond's name was still on the account.

The unit contained boxes of documents.

Property surveys.

Old photographs.

Bank records.

Construction plans.

And a leather notebook.

Dorothy opened it.

The first pages contained ordinary household expenses.

Then, halfway through, the handwriting changed.

Not Raymond's.

Someone had written a list of names and amounts.

Bruce Carter.

Leonard Vale.

Charles Benton.

Alicia.

Mark.

Beside Alicia's name was a question mark.

Beside Mark's was the word “pressure.”

Beside Leonard's was a larger note.

“Knows about lake access.”

Dorothy turned the page.

There it was.

The old agreement.

Years earlier, Raymond had negotiated a private restriction preventing commercial development from using the lake-access corridor.

The agreement was legally binding.

If it still existed, the development plan was impossible.

Samuel read it carefully.

“This is why they need the property transferred.”

Dorothy nodded.

“If they own the property through a new entity, they can challenge the old restriction.”

“And if they can make the old agreement disappear…”

“They control the lake.”

The final pages contained something even stranger.

A list of dates.

Meetings.

Payments.

Calls.

And December fifteenth circled twice.

Below it, Raymond had written:

“They believe this is their deadline.”

Dorothy looked at Samuel.

“What happens on December fifteenth?”

“We find out.”

The following morning, Dorothy received a letter from Charles Benton.

It was formal.

Cold.

It warned that continued resistance could result in legal proceedings concerning Dorothy's ability to manage her affairs.

She read it once.

Then again.

Finally, she folded it.

“They're moving.”

Samuel nodded.

“Then we move first.”

He began preparing a response.

But Dorothy stopped him.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“I want them to think they're winning.”

Samuel studied her face.

“What are you planning?”

Dorothy looked toward the lake.

“I'm going to give them exactly what they expect.”

She would appear frightened.

She would appear tired.

She would let them believe the pressure was working.

And while they celebrated, Samuel would build the case.

Alicia agreed to cooperate.

Mark, when told the truth, was devastated.

“I should have listened to you,” he said.

Dorothy answered honestly.

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“I don't know how to fix it.”

“You start by telling the truth.”

He nodded.

That evening, Dorothy returned home alone.

She stood at Raymond's old desk and opened the leather notebook one more time.

A loose page fell from the back.

She picked it up.

Raymond had written only one sentence.

“If they ever force you to choose between peace and truth, choose truth. Peace built on a lie never lasts.”

Dorothy folded the page and placed it inside her pocket.

For the first time in months, she felt something other than fear.

She felt ready.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: Let Them Believe I Was Cornered

Alicia returned two days later.
