She expected to find evidence of a forged signature.

Instead, she found something more disturbing.

Patterns.

The same names appeared repeatedly.

Carter.

Vale.

Benton.

And occasionally, Alicia.

Not on every document. That would have been too obvious.

Instead, their names appeared around the edges of transactions, inquiries, phone records, and meetings.

Dorothy spread everything across the dining-room table.

By three in the morning, she had stopped thinking of the papers as separate events.

They were a trail.

At sunrise, she noticed a handwritten note tucked inside an old envelope.

Raymond's handwriting.

“Never trust the document that arrives after the conversation.”

Dorothy read it twice.

Then she remembered a conversation from eight months earlier.

Alicia had brought over a packet and asked Dorothy to sign several pages.

She had said they were routine updates related to the property.

Dorothy had been preparing for a doctor's appointment.

She remembered signing two pages.

Maybe three.

She did not remember the forged document.

That meant someone had either replaced pages afterward or had obtained her signature another way.

Dorothy called Samuel at eight.

“Come over.”

He did.

When she told him what she remembered, he immediately asked whether she still had the packet.

“I don't know.”

“Then we find it.”

They searched the office together.

After nearly an hour, Dorothy found an old accordion folder behind a box of Christmas decorations.

Inside was the packet.

Samuel compared the pages.

His face changed.

“What?”

“This page was replaced.”

“How can you tell?”

“The staple marks.”

Dorothy stared.

“There are two sets.”

Samuel nodded.

“The original pages were removed.”

Dorothy sat down.

“Who had access to this?”

“Whoever handled the documents after you signed them.”

She looked at the her.

“No.”

Dorothy understood.

Raymond would never have participated.

He had been the person trying to warn her.

Samuel photographed every page.

Then he said, “We need to talk about your son.”

Dorothy closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“Not because we know he's involved.”

“Because we don't.”

That was worse.

Later that afternoon, Mark arrived without Alicia.

Dorothy let him inside.

He looked exhausted.

“I asked her about the guardianship thing,” he said.

“And?”

“She said she was only trying to protect you.”

Dorothy almost smiled.

“Everyone says that.”

Mark sat down.

“What is happening, Mom?”

She placed the forged document in front of him.

He stared at it.

“What is this?”

“My signature.”

“That's your signature.”

“No.”

Mark looked up.

“What?”

“I didn't sign it.”

His face drained.

“Mom…”

“I need you to answer one question.”

“Okay.”

“When did you first hear about the property being worth more than a million dollars?”

Mark looked confused.

“I don't know.”

“Think.”

He did.

“Alicia mentioned it.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

“How many months?”

“Maybe six.”

Dorothy leaned back.

“That's important.”

“Why?”

“Because Bruce approached me about eighteen months ago.”

Mark stared.

“I didn't know that.”

“Did you know he paid someone twenty-five thousand dollars?”

“No.”

“Did you know Leonard Vale was involved?”

“No.”

“Did you know Charles Benton was discussing guardianship?”

Mark's silence lasted too long.

Dorothy's heart sank.

“I knew there had been legal conversations,” he admitted.

“When?”

“A few months ago.”

“With whom?”

“Charles.”

Dorothy's voice became very quiet.

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I thought it was about protecting your finances.”

“From whom?”

“You.”

The word hung between them.

Mark immediately shook his head.

“No. That's not what I meant.”

“But that's what you said.”

“I meant protecting you from people taking advantage of you.”

Dorothy looked directly at him.

“Who told you I couldn't protect myself?”

Mark didn't answer.

He finally whispered, “Alicia.”

Dorothy turned away.

For the first time, Mark looked frightened.

“Mom, I didn't know they were doing this.”

“They?”

He looked at her.

“I don't know.”

“That's not good enough.”

“I know.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“There's something else.”

Dorothy waited.

“Alicia has been meeting with Leonard.”

“When?”

“I saw them once.”

“Where?”

“At a restaurant near the highway.”

“Did she know you saw them?”

“No.”

“What were they discussing?”

“I don't know.”

Mark swallowed.

“But I heard her say something about the lake.”

Dorothy felt the room grow smaller.

“Exactly what?”

“She said the access road had to be settled before December fifteenth.”

Dorothy looked at Samuel.

The deadline.

Everything came back to that date.

The supposed offer.

The guardianship threat.

The property filings.

The lake access.

December fifteenth was not a deadline for Dorothy.

It was a deadline for the people waiting to acquire her property.

That night, Samuel filed a notice challenging the suspicious document.

He also advised Dorothy not to meet with anyone alone.

But Dorothy had no intention of waiting.

She needed to know what Alicia knew.

The next morning, she called her daughter-in-law.

“Come to the house.”

Alicia arrived thirty minutes later.

Dorothy sat across from her at the dining table.

“No lawyers,” Alicia said.

“Then tell me the truth.”

Alicia looked nervous.

“About what?”

“Leonard Vale.”

Her expression changed.

Dorothy continued.

“Bruce Carter.”

Another change.

“Charles Benton.”

Alicia's eyes filled with tears.

“Mom, please.”

“And the December fifteenth deadline.”

Alicia stared at her.

“You know.”

“I know enough.”

Alicia sat down.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Alicia said, “You don't understand what Leonard promised.”

“What did he promise?”

“That Mark would be taken care of.”

Dorothy felt something inside her crack.

“You sold my home for your husband's future?”

“No.”

“You helped them.”

“I thought they were going to make everything legal.”

“By forging my signature?”

“I didn't forge it.”

“Then who did?”

Alicia looked toward the window.

Dorothy waited.

“Charles had copies,” she whispered.

“Copies of what?”

“Old documents.”

“Raymond's documents?”

Alicia nodded.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“You do.”

Alicia covered her face.

“They said if the property transferred, Mark would receive part of the development money.”

Dorothy's eyes closed.

“How much?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you ask?”

Alicia shook her head.

“Did Mark?”

“No.”

“Then you let strangers promise you money using my home.”

Alicia began crying.

“I thought Raymond had left debts.”

Dorothy stared at her.

“Raymond had debts?”

“That’s what Charles said.”

“He lied.”

Alicia looked up.

“Why?”

“Because Raymond left records proving otherwise.”

Dorothy stood.

“And now I want every document you have.”

Alicia hesitated.

“Everything.”

Finally, Alicia nodded.

“I'll bring them.”

She left.

Dorothy remained at the table.

Samuel came into the room from the hallway.

“You heard?”

“I heard enough.”

Dorothy looked toward the door.

“She knows more than she's saying.”

“I agree.”

“But she may not be the person who started this.”

“No.”

Dorothy thought of Leonard Vale.

Then Charles Benton.

Then Raymond.

She remembered his warning.

Never trust the document that arrives after the conversation.

Dorothy suddenly understood the deeper meaning.

Raymond had known someone would eventually try to make a false story look official.

The documents were not the beginning.

They were the weapon.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7:
