The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. Somewhere beyond the bedroom wall, an old pipe gave a soft metallic knock. For most of her life, those sounds had been background noise, the ordinary language of a home that had carried her through births, funerals, arguments, holidays, and long stretches of quiet. Now every sound seemed to have a second meaning.

Raymond’s final warning had changed that.

She reached toward the nightstand and touched the edge of the envelope Samuel had given her. She did not open it again. She had read Raymond’s words so many times the previous evening that she could almost hear his voice saying them. Not because he expected danger. Because he had understood that people sometimes became dangerous when they believed a thing belonged to them simply because they had planned for it long enough.

Dorothy got dressed slowly and went downstairs. She made coffee, but she barely drank it. The offer from Bruce Carter sat in her mind like a stone: one hundred eighty thousand dollars for a property that had recently been valued at more than one million two hundred thousand. At first, she had thought the insult was the low number. Now she understood that the number was almost beside the point.

Someone had already decided the house was theirs.

She took Raymond’s folder from the drawer beside the kitchen table and spread the papers out. Samuel had marked several documents with small yellow tabs. One was an old survey showing the lake access running along the eastern boundary. Another was a tax document. A third was a copy of a deed Dorothy remembered signing years ago but had never thought twice about afterward.

At the bottom of the folder was a photograph.

Dorothy stared at it for several seconds before recognizing the place. It showed the back of the property, near the trees that bordered the lake. Raymond stood beside Bruce Carter. They were not smiling. Raymond held a rolled set of plans beneath one arm. Bruce was pointing toward the shoreline.

On the back, Raymond had written a date.

Eighteen months earlier.

Dorothy's stomach tightened.

She remembered that period. Raymond had still been healthy enough to spend long afternoons outside. He had complained about contractors asking too many questions and had become unusually protective of his files. Dorothy had assumed he was simply being cautious.

Now she wondered how many things she had dismissed because she trusted the people around her.

Her phone rang.

It was Mark.

For a moment she considered letting it go to voicemail.
